The Bressanone (Brixen) Cathedral was built in 980. Eventually, after two fires, the Romanesque design with its three naves and two front towers was constructed (around 1200). A Baroque design was later constructed in 1745-1754.

The Bressanone Cathedral's cloister is one of the most important monuments of art in South Tyrol. The cloister is famous in particular for its Gothic frescoes. It was originally built in pre Romanesque times but later redesigned in Romanesque and Gothic style.

A cloister (from Latin claustrum, "enclosure") is a covered walk, open gallery, or open arcade running along the walls of a building.

The attachment of a cloister to a cathedral or church usually indicates that it was part of a monastic foundation forming a continuous and solid architectural barrier that effectively separated the world of the monks from that of the serfs and workmen, whose lives and works went on outside and around the cloister.

The town church Ludwigsburg is a Protestant church building in the core city of Ludwigsburg.

The town church was built between 1718 and 1726 by master builder Donato Giuseppe Frisoni as a baroque preaching church on the west side of the market square. Already in 1720, before the completion of the two towers, the office of a city councilor (tower-blower) had been established, which still exists today.

I just love the folds moving in the non-existent wind of this angel.

The angel is one of several decorating Ponte Sant'Angelo - the bridge was originally called Pons Aelius (Aelian Bridge) and built in 134 A.D. by emperor Hadrian to connect the city and his mausoleum, supposedly by the architect Demetrian. It was later also referred to as pons Sancti Petri (the bridge of St Peter) because pilgrims used it to get to the St Peter's basilica. And in the early 7th century it was given the official name of Sant'Angelo, to match the name-change of the mausoleum to Castel Sant'Angelo.

In the 15th century the bridge was used to display the bodies of executed criminals.

The angels now adorning the bridge were commissioned in 1669 by pope Clement IX and made by students of Bernini under his directions. This particular one, holding a column, was made by Antonio Raggi

Interior of the church Santa Maria Maddalena - a Baroque church, for the order Ministri degli Infirmi which had a church on this spot since 1586. The work on the current church was begun in the 17th century in the Baroque style (and the main main facade was actually finished in the 1730s in the Rococo style (after some 70 years of work on the church). Several architects were involved in this long process, and the dome is thought to be the work of Carlo Fontana.

Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, England and home to a branch of the Howards. Designed by John Vanbrugh assisted by Nicholas Hawksmoor in the then fashionable English Baroque style. Construction began in 1701.

It was Vanbrugh’s first major foray into architecture. He and the professional architect Hawksmoor were involved shortly after with the design of Blenheim Palace

A fire in 1940 destroyed much of the building including the dome. Part has since been restored.

A visit to the Elan Valley in the spring is a fine day out. The surrounding hills are remote, wild and very soggy at the best of times, so after a thaw and then a lot of Spring rain the water pours down from the hills and fills the reservoirs to the point of spectacularly overflowing. Graig Goch is the top dam of the Elan Valley series, and is perhaps the finest with its elegant curve and arches - the best example of Birmingham

Baroque! The dam is 156m wide and 36m (118 feet) high, so when the water is overflowing it is a sight to behold.

I know it is a bit of a postcard shot - but when the view is this good, why not? For anyone going to photograph the dams in full flow, the morning is best to catch the sun on the water.

The small church in front is the Protestant parish church of St. Ulrich. The much larger church behind it is the Catholic Basilica of SS. Ulrich and Afra.

The onion shaped tower of the late-gothic Catholic church, which was finalized in 1594, became a model of lots of Baroque onion shaped church towers in Bavaria.

The little onion shaped tower of the Protestant church was built in the years 1709 and 1710.

If you were to believe social media, everybody is happy and mankind lives on beaches and in restaurants. "Faces of Sorrow" aims to show the hidden face of mankind - the sorrow, the shame, the pain and anguish. Strangely, these baroque sculptures are more honest to us than we could hope to be today...

Vydubychi Monastery, a historic monastery in Kyiv established between 1070 and 1077 by Vsevolod, son of Yaroslav the Wise.

Only a few churches of this monastery have survived over the centuries. One of these is the Collegiate Church of Saint Michael, which was built on behest of Vsevolod I and partly reconstructed between 1766 and 1769. The Ukrainian baroque structures include the magnificent 5-domed St. George Cathedral, Transfiguration of the Saviour Church and refectory, all dating from 1696-1701. A belltower, commissioned by the Hetman Danylo Apostol, was erected in 1727-33 and built up in 1827-31.

The convent and church of Santa Clara, founded in 1596, located in the historic centre of Quito, stands out for its Baroque style. The church has no tower and the square cloister consists of arches resting on octagonal pillars.

The castle of Münster/Germany was built between 1767 and 1787.

This organ case in the Peterskirche (English: St. Peter's Church) in Vienna is by Gottfried Sonnholz and dates from 1751. It consists of 119 blind pipes, the actual present organ behind it was built in 1903 by Franz Josef Swoboda.

While I was taking these photos, an organist played Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. That just sounded wonderful! When he finished playing, the people sitting in the pews, about a dozen in number, applauded and I realised that I had walked around with my camera in the middle of a poorly attended organ concert. Of course, I applauded too.

In the years 1727 to 1732, the Aachen master builder Johann Joseph Couven carried out a fundamental Baroque remodeling, especially in the area of the front facade and the entrance staircase.

The Gothic figural decoration as well as the cross sticks from the windows were removed. The interiors were also remodeled in the Baroque style. An impression of this can still be seen today in the meeting hall and the "White Hall" on the first floor.

St Andrew's Church (Andriivska tserkva) is an Orthodox church in Kyiv, constructed between 1747 and 1754 to a design by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, a rare example of Elizabethan Baroque in Ukraine. Situated on a steep hill, where Andrew the Apostle is believed to have foretold the great future of the place as the cradle of Christianity in the Slavic lands, the church overlooks the historic Podil neighborhood. Since 1968, the building has been a museum, part of the National Sanctuary "Sophia of Kyiv" as a landmark of cultural heritage.

The church was consecrated in honor of Andrew the Apostle who is recognized as the "Apostle of Rus′". According to the chronicle The Tale of Bygone Years, Saint Andrew came to the Dnipro River's slopes in the 1st century AD and erected a cross on the current location of the church. He prophesied that the sparsely inhabited area would become a great city. As he predicted, the site arose to become the city of Kiev, a center of the Eastern Orthodox faith in Rus′.

The uniqueness of St. Andrew's Church in Kyiv (1748–1767) is in its unusual location and architecture. The temple was built on an artificial hill, and the foundation for it is the terrace of a two-story building - a stylobate, to which a large cast-iron staircase leads.

This is the only known monument of history, architecture and painting of the 18th century on the territory of Ukraine, created in the imperial baroque style according to the project of the outstanding Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

This is a picture I took a few years ago of Harlaxton Manor. You may recognise this place for it's appearance in a number of films, more famously for the remake of the Haunting Starring Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Owen Wilson. I have never been into the grounds or the house itself as it doesn't seem to be open to the public very often. However there are a few open days throughout the Summer Holidays and I only work a few miles away, so I may be tempted to visit soon.

The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom. Following Jayavarman's death, it was modified and augmented by later Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings in accordance with their own religious preferences.

The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple has two sets of bas-reliefs, which present a combination of mythological, historical, and mundane scenes. The main conservatory body, the Japanese Government Team for the Safeguarding of Angkor (the JSA) has described the temple as "the most striking expression of the baroque style" of Khmer architecture, as contrasted with the classical style of Angkor Wat.
