This is a black and white picture of a Bridge.

Tarua Beach is currently a potential tourist destination. The beauty of Tarua Island, which rises in the Bay of Bengal in Dhalchar Union under Dakshin Aicha Police Station of Bhola District, is truly eye-catching.

Nature's form is seen here in the play of light and darkness. You will also find a spectacular view of the Red Sun getting lost in the chest of the Red Sea by climbing the stairs in the evening sky. You will also be mesmerized by the incomparable sight of the whole beach being filled with redness.

(Bangladesh, delta south west - scan of anold print from a slide)

Some of the last sailing boats that I still could see in 1991, somewhere between Barisal and Khulna early morning, whereas in the late 70s and early 80s there were many more –

... and this time, I’ll quote some sentences from the very exhaustive research book « The Country Boats Of Bangladesh : social and economic development and decision-making in inland water transport », (Eirik G. Jansen, University Press Limited, Dhaka, 1989) :

« Alternating between the various modes of locomotion – sailing, pulling, poling and rowing, the crew steadily makes its way dowstream…

The boatmen do not like to travel at night - moreover, they feel insecure : river pirates and robbers are a real threat to country boats in Bangladesh….

Country boats will often sail in pairs for safety and mutual assistance, and on the big rivers, whole fleets (« bohor ») of country boats can be seen sailing together. Sometimes, a boat is stuck on a sandbank and has to unload part of the cargo to get off.

« In the case of transport within rural areas, mechanized tranport is virtually absent, while in rural-urban transport, the share of mechanized modes, especially trucks, is clearly on the increase…

Large areas of Bangladesh, particularly eastern, central, and southern parts of the country, are extremely dependent on waterways for transport. Most « hats » (markets) in these regions are located on rivers and channels. It is common for boats to serve several « hats » in the same region, and thus to operate according to a rather rigid time schedule.

(etc… In the note of the next photo, I explained how and when the first engines were adapted to those country boats)

(All kinds of goods were transported that way : cement, fertilizer, wheat, barrels, bricks, bamboo poles, jute, fruits and vegetables ; people, on the other hand, have been the first to travel with motorised boats : much faster, of course).
