On 29th. September 1917 this small train started its journey on its narrow gauge line from Katwa(Bardwan) to Ahmadpur(Birbhum),and after a long journey finally it has got the destination on last sunday(13th, January 2013) as the line is being under constriction to change into broad gauge.
It is a Railbus, comprised of four cars, the front having the drivers' enclosure. The livery was a pleasant blue, and the coaches had CR markings.The line was built and operated by Mc.leod Light Railways.The Mackliod Company of Britain which was the subsidiary of Mc. Leod Russell & Co. Ltd of London, maintained this train till 1966 and then handed over to the Indian Railway. Initially there were four trains daily,used to cover 52 KM of long way and covering 10 more halts or station like Kirnahar,Labpur,Chowhatta etc.
It was the life line of this area,many historical moment are linked with this four bogies of little beauty.In 1933 the femous poet of Bengal Kazi Nazrul Islam came to Labpur boarding on it. The Gyanpiht awardee(1969) Tarasankar Bondhopadhyaya used to came from Calcutta(Kolkata) to his native place Labpur with this train.This train has been captured in the celluloid by famous film directors of many Indian film like in Abhijan by Satyajit Roy , in Hansuli Banker Upokotha of Tapan Sinhga, in Ajantrik of Ritwik Ghatak.Present Honorable President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee used this train to go Katwa from his native place Kirnahar during his school final examination .

Homemade ethnic character dolls are the main characteristic feature of NATUNGRAM village of BARDWAN district, West Bengal. The nearest Railway stations from the village are Agradeep and Katwa (1.4-1.5 km).
The dolls are carved in wood and decoratively painted by a group of rural craft persons, known as "SUTRADHARS" ( meaning 'narrator' or 'story teller'), because they make characters from ancient folklores and mythology and tell stories through their dolls.
The owl, with its unique design and colours, is the brand product of the village. On the white background of the owl is painted with the distinctive colours of red, green, yellow and black colours lines. Beside the Owl Krishna-Radha, King- Queen, Durga dolls are made in traditional way.
The dolls are craved from one single piece of wood. A big piece of cylindrical woood is cut off in every direction according to the size, shape and figure requirement. Then to give it a final shape the structure is chiseled out. The traditional design based on culture and mythology, the richness of ideas, the brilliant combination of pure and simplicity and glamour combined with the master craftmanship of the craft artists, resulting an amazing art work. Now a days some of the wodden dolls are barnished to give them a great finishing touch for making them useful in interior decoration.
Around 60 families living in the Natungram village are involved in the Doll making. In this family craft business both men and women have key role. The doll makers are organized as a collective, 'Natungram Kastho Khodai Hastashilpa Samity'.

Natungram Village, Burdwan - 2015
The name Dokra or Dhokra was used to indicate a group of craftsmen of nomadic type, scattered over Bengal, Orisa and Madhya Pradash and ware identified by their beautifully shaped and decorated metal products. The craftsmen have latter on settled down in some areas of Bardwan, Bankura and Midapur districts of West Bengal leaving their nomadic character. Most of such craftsmen had left the craft leaving only a few families in the trade.
Dokra system of metal casting is said to be oldest form of metal casting and is technically known as ‘cire perdue’ or lost wax process. A replica of the desired product is made with wax on a clay core with all its finer details of designs and decorations. A few coats of finely prepared clay paste is applied over the model and dried in the shade. The technique of casting revolves round replacement of wax with molten metal by the traditional hollow casting method. Brass scrap in generally used as raw material.
In recent years, the product of Dokra artisans are in great demand in domestic and foreign market because of it primitive simplicity enchanting folk motifs and forceful form. Products like dokra horses, elephants, peacock owl, religious images, and measuring bowls, lamp caskets etc., are highly appreciated.
[57 families are still engaged in the crafts scattered in the districts like Bankura, Birbhum, Burdwan and Midnapur.]

Homemade ethnic character dolls are the main characteristic feature of NATUNGRAM village of BARDWAN district, West Bengal. The nearest Railway stations from the village are Agradeep and Katwa (1.4-1.5 km).
The dolls are carved in wood and decoratively painted by a group of rural craft persons, known as "SUTRADHARS" ( meaning 'narrator' or 'story teller'), because they make characters from ancient folklores and mythology and tell stories through their dolls.
The owl, with its unique design and colours, is the brand product of the village. On the white background of the owl is painted with the distinctive colours of red, green, yellow and black colours lines. Beside the Owl Krishna-Radha, King- Queen, Durga dolls are made in traditional way.
The dolls are craved from one single piece of wood. A big piece of cylindrical woood is cut off in every direction according to the size, shape and figure requirement. Then to give it a final shape the structure is chiseled out. The traditional design based on culture and mythology, the richness of ideas, the brilliant combination of pure and simplicity and glamour combined with the master craftmanship of the craft artists, resulting an amazing art work. Now a days some of the wodden dolls are barnished to give them a great finishing touch for making them useful in interior decoration.
