Here are some caterpillars of our tropical butterflies, photographed at other butterfly houses. We are not allowed to breed caterpillars where the public has access, so we must avoid planting any of their host plants. Some butterfly houses have enough space and staff to grow plants and breed butterflies in separate houses. We prefer to let our butterfly farmers do it for us!
This particular caterpillar is that of the Bamboo Butterfly (Eryphanis polyxena), also called the Mort Bleu, from Central and South America. Like its pupa (seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/ncmls/4464653279/in/set-72157625410..., it strongly resembles the bamboo leaves upon which it feeds, especially when it lies parallel to the leaf or stem. It spends the day in this position, where it is nearly impossible to see, and feeds at night, as do most caterpillars.
