The backside of the first round of Wednesday's severe weather that went through our area of the Midwest.Several damaging tornadoes were reported south of our area.A lot of trees were victim in the Sterling-Rock Falls area and power was out for a long period-24 hours for us.Fortunately,I had installed a generator system for our farm,so we didn't suffer much.Rain is in the forecast for 4 of the next 6 days, and it isn't going to get out of the mid-50's today.Corn planting for us is done, the beans will have to wait....
Slowly it's time to plan our trip to Scotland this year. In the process, many memories of April last year are awakened. Once again, I would like to thank my wife for making this life's dream come true. Thank you my darling, I love you!
I will never forget the breathtaking view over the Quiraing. And at the same time, I'm looking forward to the next time. And no matter whether it is snowing, stormy, rainy or sunny. This area has its charm with every weather.

Thank you all so much for your comments & faves.
Another look at the storm 2 weeks that produced a tornado and several funnel clouds in our area. If you look at this in LARGE or zoom in,you can see the funnel forming. It never touched down while I was watching, but instead, kept getting longer and than shorter. First funnel cloud I have seen firsthand!
Have a great weekend everyone!
My first photoshoot in Bordeaux ^^

I'm very excited to announce that I took on the role as one of the moderators on Erin Babnik's new landscape photography forums! :-)
If you don't know Erin Babnik, shame on you! She has been a huge inspiration for me over the years. Check out her truly amazing portfolio here (with some of my faves, hard to choose, but: this, this, this and this).
If you are serious about landscape photography, check out the ThinkOutside Landscape Photography Forums here!
It's all just starting up, but it should turn into a good resource for anything that is landscape photography related.

Once upon a time... on another beautiful morning in Tuscany. When you visit these extremely popular locations, everything at least should be perfect... The morning turned out to be nice and misty and there were pastel colors everywhere! I chose a bit lower angle to shoot Podere Belvedere and as a very wide panorama of which this is a part.
To make the fairytale complete, 4 roe deer were grazing in the midground here and they can be seen in the full-res version. Those are hardly visible on Flickr unfortunately.

Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. A sudden gust of wind providing a beautiful photographic opportunity with these three women being blinded by their hair.
One from a session I did some years ago now; I'd never used. Applied a simple Nik Collection Color efex pro4 Skylight filter and a 16:9 crop trying to take into account the amount of negative black backround.

Candid street photography from Glasgow. Catching her mid-stride I just loved the bold pattern of her coat and the wind-blown hair obscuring her identity - enjoy!

If you saw the movie "Back Draft this is the real Don Rimgale. A man named Gregory Widen wrote Backdraft . He came to Chicago to write a story about the Chicago Fire Department. The wise Chiefs did not want anything to do with it. FF Don Rimgale then assign to Fire Arson heard about it and met up with Greg. Don took him around to firehouses and he heard stories from the guys. When he wrote the movie play he named Robert De Niro part Capt. Don Rimgale of Arson. The wise Chiefs were all in the funeral scene, most of them were scabs who worked the strike in 1980. That is how they became chiefs to begin
with. The city took care of the scabs.
I work with Don when he was on Squad 3 stationed in Engine 101 house for years. Don is a big man, very smart and was a good fireman. One problem with Don, I saw him about a month ago and he thinks Bush is a good man. Don Don what happen to your brains maybe to much smoke got in
This is what a cane fire looks like up close and personal. There was no actual hurricane involved in this burn, but in addition to the deafening crackle that assaults your ears and the searing heat you can feel burn your skin one hundred feet away - the intensity of the fire creates its own wind and backdraft as well. It's a sight to behold.

I Approach my Quarry!
Six days ago I was up at 3 AM, listening to Hans Zimmer while editing photos, and then I had an idea for a project with him, so I made a blog post. Now, less than a week later, I was in his studio in California!
For those of you that don't know who Hans Zimmer is, he's, like, the Liger of composers. He did the soundtrack for The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, Gladiator, Sherlock Holmes, and many more! In fact, back when I was in college and had a double major in Computer Science and Geophyisics (I dropped the Geophysics bit after a fight with the professor), I commandeered the SGI machine in the Geology department to make a computer animation, and I set the whole thing to one of Zimmer's songs from Backdraft called "Burn it All". So, in short, I've had Hans Zimmer's music in my head for about 20 years.
The Story of How I Got Into Hans Zimmer's Studio
It's because of you! We have millions of visits here on the blog every month, and you all know how thankful I am for your repeat patronage. It's tough to get a pretty photo up every day, and I thank you for all your feedback! So, when I put out the call in my newsletter, I got a ton of responses. My math-guess was that I was one or two degrees away from Hans, especially since there are many creative-types that are regular visitors.
Also, many of you hyper-active types (like me!) talk to me, ask questions, and follow me on Twitter -- thank you for being responsive to real-time requests and news.
About an hour after I sent out the newsletter at midnight, I got a response from a German gentleman (name private) who is friends with Hans! In fact, he told me he was going to see Hans the next day at his studio near Hollywood! He did a few things to help out, and, although I could not meet Hans today, I did get an amazing opportunity to take photos of his studio. I knew I could make his studio look the way it feels -- I had a sublime confidence I could make it happen. Anyway, I was like a kid in a candy store. I got a ton of shots... I only had time to process four of them.
Hans Zimmer's Studio
I don't know if words do it justice, but I hope these photos do.
The studio is even bigger than I thought, and I was reminded of the Crimson Lounge in Chicago. In fact, I pulled up the image on my laptop there on the table to compare textures and light. I thought everything worked well together -- the decadence and richness of the decorations integrated with the technology. I don't know if there is a word for such a look... It's something out of a Phillip Pullman novel, somewhere between Steampunk and Techno-boudoir. Again, words fail.
The first two photos I have placed on Flickr. You can click on them to go to Flickr and then zoom into the full-res size. Amazing details -- especially in the chair photo. I'll post more in coming weeks, months, and years, as usual. So, stay tuned in my this ongoing quest!
