The TR4 picture is a story –viz - About the start of the 60s, Southend was plagued with ton-up boys roaring up and down the A127 Arterial Road between Southend & London when they wasn’t fighting mods on our Seafront. The Chief (A really great man named McConnach) decided we would have a dedicated sports car patrolling the Arterial. We first tried out a Daimler Sp250 Dart but apart from being ‘exotic’ it was too dear so then we had an Austin-Healey 3000 that made more noise then the motor bikes. Then we tried an MGA I think it was called but 2 fat coppers couldn’t get in it so we finally settled on a TR4. The only thing I ever caught driving it.. was backache from the hard suspension and leg cramps at the end of an 8 hour shift and I have never had nor wanted a sports car since.

(The words of the late PC Pat Dowling)

There is a pause in the data cylinders, but they were able to be rebooted and Jack Taylor's audio logs continued:

" I awoke-I am not sure how long I had been out-with a headache that drove a burnig spike between the hemispheres of my brain, and one hell of a backache. I was on a makeshift cot in what appeared to be an underground bunker. I was also not alone. The water merchant Amanda stood bediside and explained what had happened.

I had indeed stumbled through an EMP barrier. My bio armor had gone dead, and the power surge affected me and I had gone unconscious.

And apparently, the government's Citadel is not as sealed as they would like its inhabitants to believe. Amanda, on a weekly basis, delivers several large vats of water to the Citadel. She had just finished said delivery when she noticed my body laying in the dust. Lcukily I had fallen still within the sniper's blindspot, otherwise i would have had another hole between my eyes, no doubt. She brought me here, to an old underground bunker, watching me and helping me recover. And for that I am eternally grateful. She asked why I was suicidal, seeing as I was attempting to break into the Citadel, one man against the government. I shrugged my shoulders and went quiet. She nodded in understanding then mentioned she was a member of a group of poeple who were attempting to do the very same thing I was, taking down th government once and for all.

'We could use a man like you,' she told me over a cup of clear, cold water.

I am still undecided, but she says she will be traveling to the resistance's HQ tomorrow, and I am welcome to come with her...."

In 1916, internal combustion power was in its infancy and most railway locomotives were powered by steam. However, the smoke, steam and night-time glow of the fire on a steam loco were a disadvantage near the front line, as they allowed the enemy to identify and attack trains and railway lines. All participants in the Somme therefore used petrol-powered locomotives in forward areas, supported by steam locos to the rear.

The Motor Rail & Tramcar company supplied hundreds of ‘Simplex’ petrol-mechanical locomotives to the British army, in 20HP and 40HP variants. The larger 40HP locos were delivered with three varieties of bodywork: ‘Open’, ‘Protected’ or ‘Armoured’. Their 4-cylinder, 8-litre petrol engine was thirsty and had a terrible power/weight ratio, but was robust and easily maintained. After the war, many were reconditioned and sold, and some were still operating in industrial service 50 years later.

The Ffestiniog Railway purchased a reconditioned 40HP loco in 1923, primarily for shunting duties. It was a ‘cut and shut’ job using the frame and engine of an ‘Open’ locomotive with the bodywork of a ‘Protected’ type; presumably combining the good bits of two war-weary locos. It was the last loco in operation in 1946 and the first to be used by the preservationists in 1954. It has appeared in a number of guises over the years but was returned to a largely original appearance for the event at Froissy, replacing the roof and a missing end panel, adding numberplates and receiving a new coat of paint. The original petrol engine is still going strong; the heat, smell, noise and backache associated with driving this tin box is an experience I would only recommend to the most hardy railwayman. How much worse must it have been with shells, shrapnel and bullets flying?

Here the Simplex trundles through the wooded area along the banks of the Somme canal with a short freight train of contemporary wagons. David Blondin, who organised the event, is experiencing a ride in the 'tin turtle'.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

However, if you prefer words over pictures, below is some history on the origin of this saying. Happy weekend all!

This phrase emerged in the USA in the early part of the 20th century. Its introduction is widely attributed to Frederick R. Barnard, who published a piece commending the effectiveness of graphics in advertising with the title "One look is worth a thousand words", in Printer's Ink, December 1921. Barnard claimed the phrase's source to be oriental by adding "so said a famous Japanese philosopher, and he was right".

Printer's Ink printed another form of the phrase in March 1927, this time suggesting a Chinese origin:

"Chinese proverb. One picture is worth ten thousand words."

The arbitrary escalation from 'one thousand' to 'ten thousand' and the switching from Japan to China as the source leads us to smell a rat with this derivation. In fact, Barnard didn't introduce the phrase - his only contribution was the incorrect suggestion that the country of origin was Japan or China. This has led to another popular belief about the phrase, that is, that it was coined by Confucius. It might fit the Chinese-sounding 'Confucius he say' style, but the Chinese derivation was pure invention.

Many things had been thought to be 'worth ten thousand words' well before pictures got in on the act; for example:

"One timely deed is worth ten thousand words" - The Works of Mr. James Thomson, 1802.

"That tear, good girl, is worth, ten thousand words" - The Trust: A Comedy, in Five Acts, 1808.

"One fact well understood by observation, and well guided development, is worth a thousand times more than a thousand words" - The American Journal of Education, 1858.

The idea that a picture can convey what might take many words to express was voiced by a character in Ivan S. Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons, 1862:

"The drawing shows me at one glance what might be spread over ten pages in a book."

A similar idea was seen very widely in the USA from the early 20th century, in adverts for Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, which included a picture of a man holding his back and the text "Every picture tells a story".

Neither of the above led directly to 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. Who it was that married 'worth ten thousand words' with 'picture' isn't known, but we do know that the phrase is American in origin. It began to be used quite frequently in the US press from around the 1920s onward. The earliest example I can find is from the text of an instructional talk given by the newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane to the Syracuse Advertising Men's Club, in March 1911:

"Use a picture. It's worth a thousand words."

In life, aside from when you're a kid, we don't really get to twist too much. In yoga, there are quite a lot of these poses because they are very cleansing and helpful for our internal organs. Ideally, my head should be facing towards the back but sometimes I like to twist the other way to give the otherside of my neck a stretch.

* Digestive problems

* Asthma

* Fatigue

* Lower backache

* Sciatica

* Menstrual discomfort

Benefits

* Massages abdominal organs, including the liver and kidneys

* Stretches the shoulders

* Stimulates the brain

* Relieves mild backache and hip pain

* Strengthens and stretches the spine
