Personal note: Today I stopped working as a teacher. Due to too many sick days I got a disestablishment deal at work. My back pain does that my general health isn´t good. The last two months I have had every sickness my kids have brought home from the daycare center and kindergarten, my own school and have had shingles which you only can get if your immune system is very weak.

So now I dont have any idea if I will start up as a teacher again in the new year or I will have to get a part time job to spare my back. Of course this is also an economical issue.

So... these days will be filled with some heavy thinking ;-)

Tomorrow I have to go to the hospital to a preliminary investigation and monday morning I will get have away operated metal parts in my hand.

And why is that? - this is why.

Dr. Stephen Courtney -- Board Certified Orthopedic Spine Surgeon

You can always tell when the Spring Football season comes in. You can always almost tell when Spring Football season comes in because the kids start coming in. And reason why they’re coming in because they usually do too many squats. Squats or lunges or deadlifts. So the kids know that. Most of the parents maybe not have an idea what they’re doing in weight training but just from that repetitive motion, too much weight, maxing out the weights in the weight room really triggers those facet joints. The cheerleaders have the same problem, they hyperextend their back. It engages those facet joints and they also have back pain as well. A lot of volleyball kids get it a lot too. I treat a lot of volleyball kids and a lot of gymnast. Sometimes they can even break their back, have a little pars fracture where this little bone here didn’t heal to that one. It’s very, very common to gymnasts and also cheerleaders and also volleyball players. But the lineman football players, they’re the one who usually get it the most because they’re maxing on too much weight and really triggers those facet joints.

It’s usually the base in the cheerleaders. They’re the ones who usually get it more than the flyers. A few schools around here in Plano, you can just tell where they come from, which school because there’s always a lot of work in the base. So usually the base girls have the most of the problems because that’s where all the load goes. When they’re catching the other kids, it goes right down to the facet joints. So the base and the cheerleaders, they’re more prone to come here than the flyers are.

You can’t get better in a day. So it takes time and sometimes, you have to modify your activity, take a few days off, and really try to not hyperextend your back. I always tell and encourage patients to get your quads strong as you can, your hamstrings strong. That will help alleviate some of the pressure that goes to those facet joints, into your lower back.

Yes, that's right.

I know walk with a stupid, colorful cane. I have to. Otherwise, if my leg gives out- I fall down... And quite frankly, it HURTS.

In order to avoid falling, I stay off my feet most of the time. When I do have to be up, and I'm not just walking to the kitchen or bathroom... I have this tagalong with me.

It never ceases to amaze me how complete strangers have no shame about approaching me, say in the market when I have to fill my prescriptions, and they ask what's wrong with my leg. I explain it's my back. What the HELL?!? Don't people know it's RUDE TO ASK???

Obviously, if I'm walking with a cane- I need assistance because something is wrong. Unless you know me, don't freaking approach me. I'll beat you with it. And then fall down.

So ... kind of a sucky week.

Actually, all of July kind of sucked, and the first few days of August just went along with it. Come to think of it, 2017 as a whole hasn't exactly been stellar.

But never mind that, let's go to the lawn mower. I never did get this out on all my social media, so you might not have seen it.

This is the same mower my stepfather repaired for me after the carburetor crapped out. A carburetor is a ... thing ... that does ... something ... in an engine. According to my wife's research, the carburetors in this particular engine brand are now made out of plastic. Plastic in a piece of equipment that's designed to burn stuff under pressure. Yeah.

Now, this would be the same mower that gave me other problems, including a gas cap that wouldn't stay on and other small pieces that seemed to fall off at random. In addition, the little bar that stops the mower from running if you release the handle kept it from starting at all, until I bent the control wire in an un-designed direction. In retrospect, I should have known it was a lemon from the get-go, but it didn't become clear to me until after the warranty ran out.

And now there I was, pushing the mower across the yard, when suddenly the cut became uneven. It became uneven because one of the tires came off. And it wasn't just the tire: The whole assembly that held the tire to the mower deck just peeled away, like wet cardboard.

(I checked: It wasn't wet cardboard. It was metal that looked like web cardboard.)

So, for the second time, I didn't get to finish. I showed the above photo to my wife, and began my prepared speech, which was to be, "If you want to have someone fix it, that's fine, but you've got one week to get it done before I trash this piece of--"

I didn't get beyond "If you want" before she said, "Oh, we're getting rid of that thing."

My wife is a consummate researcher. It's because of her that I know about plastic carburetors, and what "consummate" means. It's in the dictionary. Who knew? Within days she narrowed down the new mowers, and then we went shopping.

For years I avoided mowers with grass catchers, because they fill up after about two passes. It took longer to mow a lawn than it does for me to assemble furniture, and I don't have that kind of time. But now we have a compost heap, which loves grass clippings, so Emily found a mower that could change between a rear bagger and a side discharge. Not only that, but it has four working wheels, and a three year warranty. Heaven in the grass.

It only took me a few hours to get it put together. And I needed to get on it, because the last two times I mowed, only about a third got done before disaster struck. It had been so long that the part already mowed needed it again, and that's where I started--a flat section, where I could get used to the new equipment.

I was being careful, you see.

But I didn't take something into consideration. I accounted for the new mower, but not the extra weight of the bag filling up. So, when I went to turn a corner on a hill, the mower zigged and my spine zagged.

I'd mowed a third of the lawn--the same third I mowed last time--before my lower back went "twang!"

It didn't sound exactly like that, of course, but that's kind of how it felt. And that's why I didn't go online much for awhile: It hurt to type. It hurt to walk, sit, lay down, lift a finger, swallow, think ... well, it hurt to think about the pain, anyway. It hurt so much that I came to appreciate my chronic back pain. Sure, that hurt all the time too, but it didn't feel like the red hot barbed tridents they use in Hell.

But my wife, through experience, has become a very good nurse. Three days later I was able to go back to work, and if you ask me I did a pretty good job of hiding the fact that my pain had only been reduced to agony status.

What have I learned from this, you ask? Well, first, always keep some of the good pain pills around the house. More important, either get a goat, or hire someone to mow your lawn. I'm leaning toward that last--I can only imagine how badly I'd get hurt dealing with a goat.

It seems that Max has ruptured another disc in his back and is back in his crate. This one has no nuerological damage with it though and we think crate rest and drug therapy will be all he needs. We are both a little discouraged, but trust he will soon be running with is pack again. I hope you are all well,

Last week I REALLY hurt my back at the gym. I was in Body Pump, my favorite workout–one that I have been doing for almost 2 years–and after the squat track, I could feel that I had done something to the lower right side of my back. I shrugged it off at first, but when it came time ...

return to school after my week of bed rest

return to school after my week of bed rest

I bought a few books to deal with my back pain. This book is :"Treat Your Back Without Surgery" by Stephen Hochschuler, M.D., and Bob Reznik, MBA. I'm doing some of the exercises in the book to help my bulging disc in my lower back. I honestly believe that sitting is worse than standing or no activity. I started to work out again today, being careful not to hit the lower back. I did chest and back today, but my back exercises consisted of only doing the upper part of my back, to prevent aggravating the lower disc. It seemed to work. I'm very excited to be able to exercise again, but will be cautious, and do more core work.

This is my 365 project picture of the day.
