A few years ago, Sunnie Elhart-Johnson was working on her master’s in management and organizational leadership on her way to becoming a hospital administrator, when she had an epiphany. “I got about halfway through the program when I realized, ‘I’m a teacher,’” she recalled. Elhart-Johnson decided to return to teaching (she had spent 10 years at Everest College), and the enthusiasm she brings to both her chosen profession and her subject matter—medical office coding—is contagious, according to her students.
“She makes boring subjects fun,” wrote one nominator. “She asks for input so she can teach better—and she really listens to it and acts on it.”Elhart-Johnson said she loves teaching at Clark, where she is now the department chair for Business Medical Technology. “What I like most about Clark is that the diversity here is broad, in terms of age ranges, educational experience, work experience, and nationalities,” she said. “That kind of diversity is a great source of learning, both for me and for my students.”Elhart-Johnson’s respect for diversity extends to different learning styles, as one student with Attention Deficit Disorder made clear in their nomination. “Most people usually give up on me, but not Sunnie,” they wrote. “She could see beyond my difficulties and my age to help me see how I could be successful. … She deserves to be recognized for the excellent teacher that she is.”
