The Coke Ovens at Workington Steelworks were operated by this unusual electric loco, photographed in June 1980. This was locally converted in 1973 from a Hawthorn Leslie steam loco of 1936 vintage, with the traditional tall steeple cab fabricated similar to that of other coke ovens locos.
Steel rails were produced at Workington since 1877, although steelmaking here ceased in 1974 and ingots then brought in from Teeside were remelted and rolled until final closure in 2006.
This was one of the best Industrial Railway visits we made, writing in advance for permission and getting a guided tour of the site. Sadly I only had an Instamatic to capture these scenes on what is now the inevitable industrial / retail park.
In the exchange sidings at BSC Corby BSC's shunter 23 brings a rake of vintage mineral wagons under the yard bridge 04/04/1980.
