The CCGS M. Charles M.B. was named after Seaman Martin Charles, S.C., M.B., of Bamfield, British Columbia, and Hereditary Chief of the Nitinat Band. Martin Charles, now deceased, devoted his life and career to saving lives. He earned the Medal of Bravery for his instrumental role in a search and rescue incident that began with a sunken fishing vessel and ended with the crash of the helicopter assisting in the rescue efforts.

This Mid-Shore Patrol Vessel will be based on the West Coast and was constructed in Halifax, Nova Scotia by Irving Shipbuilding Inc. A formal naming and dedication ceremony will follow when the vessel arrives in its home region.

The Hero Class vessels are named for decorated soldiers, veterans and police officers as well as employees of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard. By naming these vessels after Canadian heroes, the Government of Canada hopes to encourage future generations to learn about Canadian history, culture and geography.

A huge thank you to the United States Forest Service and all the mutual aid providers who risked their lives to protect life and property during the Springs Fire. Your bravery and hard work is appreciated.

Established in 1905, the Forest Service is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Forest Service manages public lands in national forests and grasslands.

Gifford Pinchot, the first Chief of the Forest Service, summed up the mission of the Forest Service— "to provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people in the long run."

National forests and grasslands encompass 193 million acres of land, which is an area equivalent to the size of Texas.

The Laguna Hotshot name was first used in the 1950's when the Descanso Ranger District financed a forest crew and based them at Camp Ole on Mount Laguna. Camp Ole was previously a CCC camp and had facilities for housing the crew and was close to areas of work. The crew was around for 4 years until funding became unavailable and the crew was disbanded. The following year the El Cariso Hotshots were founded on the Trabuco Ranger District.

In 1974, the Laguna Hotshots were once again established and based at Camp Ole. This became the second Hotshot Crew on the Cleveland National Forest. The Base at camp Ole was again used because it was the only place on the district that had housing, offices, and a space to handle a 20 person Hotshot Crew. The crew shared an office with the Laguna Engine Crew and brought in an old dilapidated travel trailer to use as a tool room. The barracks and office were all in the same building and were from the CCC days.

Kyle Rayon, wife of 1974 crewmember Howard Rayon, designed the Oak Tree emblem . The Oak Tree was used to reflect the Cleveland National Forest and specifically the Descanso Ranger District.

Due to the poor conditions of the old facilities at Camp Ole The Laguna Hotshots moved to the Descanso Compound with the Descanso Engine Crews in the town of Descanso. In 2004, the Laguna Hotshots celebrated their 30th Anniversary. To this day, the Laguna Hotshots still carry on the crew colors and traditions.

I had the pleasure of photographing this painting of the 2016 ANZAC Day Ceremony conducted by Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan at Mount Charandaz overlooking Camp Qargha on the outskirts of Kabul.

It was painted by Mrs Jillian Oliver from an original photo of the event.

Jillian has donated the painting for charity to the ADF Troops who have raffled it off with all of the proceeds being donated to an orphanage in Afghanistan within their AO.

Jillian is a 39 year old former NSW Police Officer who was severley injured in the line of duty that has unfortunately ended her career and left her with the same condition my wife Julie has, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), in her right arm.

Her life was changed forever that day, and she and her family have endured the same heartache and struggles that my wife and our family have. She like many others who suffer this terrible condition are indeed warriors.

In an effort to relax and try to deal with her pain and the depression, a friend of Jillian's suggested she try Art Therapy.

Jillian took the task head on and as you can see her work is inspirational. Worthy of note, this was painted left handed because she is unable to use her master right hand due to the CRPS.

Well done Jillian and thanks for the inspiration.

A castell (Catalan pronunciation: [kəsˈteʎ]) is a human tower built traditionally in festivals at many locations within Catalonia. At these festivals, several colles castelleres or teams often succeed in building and dismantling a tower's structure. On November 16, 2010, castells were declared by UNESCO to be amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

In Chinese culture, the White Tiger holds significant symbolism, representing power, bravery, and righteousness. It is believed to bring luck and fortune to those who respect and honor it, while also serving as a guardian of balance and harmony in the cosmos.

Great Horned Owls have the most diverse diet of all North American raptors. Their prey range in size from tiny rodents and scorpions to hares, skunks, geese, and raptors. They eat mostly mammals and birds—especially rabbits, hares, mice, and American Coots, but also many other species including voles, moles, shrews, rats, gophers, chipmunks, squirrels, woodchucks, marmots, prairie dogs, bats, skunks, house cats, porcupines, ducks, loons, mergansers, grebes, rails, owls, hawks, crows, ravens, doves, and starlings.

The Police Bravery Awards recognise officers who have put the safety of others before themselves, from forces up and down the country.

The 2021 Police Bravery Awards will be held on 9 December in London, and the ceremony will be a celebration to recognise the dedication of every officer nominated, in the presence of senior officials in government and policing.

Two of our own officers have been nominated for an award; PC Simon Toft and PC Alicia Snowden, following an armed robbery they responded to earlier this year.

Here is their story:

In March 2021, PC Simon Toft and PC Alicia Snowden attended a call from a pharmacy in Woodley following reports of an armed robbery in progress.

A man had entered the premises in possession of a hammer, and was threatening staff with a knife. A further call was received that the man had left the pharmacy and had assaulted a member of the public.

Further calls were then received that the same man was now inside Woodley Medical Centre, in possession of an axe and several kitchen knives. He was threatening to stab staff and had also thrown a chair through the window of the surgery.

PC Toft had no time to brief PC Snowden, who had just finished her first five weeks of tutor phase training with PC Toft. Instead, PC Toft instructed PC Snowden to be on full guard of her surroundings, keep herself, the public and PC Toft safe and to do what she had been trained to do as they rushed to the scene.

Upon seeing PC Toft, the man walked towards him calmly, holding a metal bar with a heavy metal base attached to it. The man lunged at PC Toft to throw the metal bar.

PC Toft quickly responded with his Taser, but due to the thickness of the man’s clothing, one of the probes did not make contact with his skin. The man ripped out the wires of the Taser and went to grab the metal pole again.

Without hesitation, PC Snowden ran towards the male and kicked the pole and base out of the way while continuing to shout instructions to him. The male was Tasered several times, as he was still reaching for knives that had fallen out of his pocket and was also trying to grab a meat cleaver that was in his backpack.

Eventually, PC Snowden was able to put handcuffs on the man, while still giving him firm and clear instructions. PC Snowden arrested the man and further patrols attended to assist.

Greater Manchester Police Federation Chair Stu Berry said: “This was a real team effort, which enabled the quick arrest of the subject and ensured no further injuries.

“This was a dangerous, dynamic and escalating situation and for Alicia in particular it was so soon into her service as a police officer. She deserves high praise for how she handled her self and her actions that day. As does Simon – for both his outstanding police work and how he cared and guided his colleague.

“We are very proud of them and they are worthy nominees.”

Safety measures are almost non-existent in construction industry. Not even a helmet is worn by these men. They don't even care about safety. It's all about getting the job done and get paid.
