A stunning winter's evening in Bratislava, Slovakia
If you'd like to take great images of this city, my SNAPP Guides photo guide is now available on Google Play and the App Store. (Spoiler alert: it's magical at Christmas!)
This lovely castle stands above the town of Bratislava and is by the river Danube. it has a long history - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bratislava_CastleFurther pictures will follow but this is from below in the front of the castle. The weather was perfect for this shot.
Bratislava Castle (Slovak: Bratislavský hrad, German: Pressburger Schloss, Hungarian: Pozsonyi Vár), the main castle of the capital of Slovakia, stands on an isolated hill of the Little Carpathians directly above the Danube river. Because of its size and location, it has been a dominant feature of the city for centuries.
"I have traveled quite a bit in my life, as Syrians we don't tend to travel that much. My journey from Turkey to Europe wasn't too bad, though not the most comfortable. Turkey became a rough place throughout the years, so I decided to try to get to Europe, holding onto the hope that one day I could return to Aleppo. I really hope the situation gets better there. There's not much to come back to. Most of my friends have either been killed or have left the city. In Europe, I ended up in a place where they hold refugees in Slovakia. I was there for a long time. Finally, thanks to some new friends, I met a very kind woman who stepped out and helped me get my life back together. She is the widow of a famous Slovak comedian, and she offered to host me in her house."
How is your life now, in her home?
“Well, she is very open minded and a nice person. I think she likes having me here, because we talk a lot and she keeps introducing me to everyone she knows when we go somewhere together. I think the message is that people who only know about the Middle East from the media have a stereotyped image of us before they even meet us. If they met us they might discover that we are humans too, with needs like anyone else on this planet. I wish I hadn’t gone through all of this, but this is my reality and my future now. I help where I can, with translations and things, but mostly I’m looking forward to starting university in a few days."
