Eel Pie Island supposedly got its name from the famous pastries sold here in a distant past when that particular fish was so plentiful in the surrounding waters. For centuries, the island — accessible only by a ferry — was a retreat for those craving quiet, or privacy

Famous Rhythm and Blues Bands who played at the Eel Pie Island Hotel were The Rolling Stones, Long John Baldry's Hoochie Coochie Men (including Rod Stewart), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (featuring Eric Clapton), Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Tridents (featuring Jeff Beck), The Who, The Yardbirds, The Downliners Sect, ...

"'Heroes'" is a song by David Bowie from his 12th studio album of the same name. Co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno and co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, the song was recorded in mid-1977 at Hansa Studio 2 in West Berlin.

It was Released in edited form by RCA Records on 23 September 1977.

In the fifth and final verse, the narrator recalls standing and kissing by the Wall while guards fired bullets above their heads. Perone states that this moment captures the sense the narrator's love can "overcome anything" and, as dolphins can freely swim as they wish, the proclamation that "we can be heroes" "gets well beyond anything the listener might have anticipated at the start of the piece"

According to Bowie, the quotation marks in the title were intended to express "a dimension of irony" on the otherwise romantic or triumphant words and music. Describing the song, he stated it is about "facing reality and standing up to it", about achieving "a sense of compassion" and "deriving some joy from the very simple pleasure of being alive". Likewise, Pegg contests the song contains underlying dark themes that juxtapose its uplifting chord sequence and delirious vocal, such as "you can be mean, and I'll drink all the time", which is "hardly the most promisingly heroic statement", while the repeated announcement of "nothing will keep us together" asserts that time is short.

(from Wikipedia)

Humanity is facing dark times. Now more than ever, we need to stay together, and bring sense and reason, stand against totalitarism and populism. We don't need to be heroes in the field of war, we need to be heroes in the streets, in the election days.

"I, I will be king

And you, you will be queen

Though nothing will drive them away

We can be Heroes, just for one day

We can be us, just for one day

I, I can remember (I remember)

Standing, by the wall (by the wall)

And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads)

And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)

And the shame, was on the other side

Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever

Then we could be Heroes, just for one day"

Detail of a replica (handmade screen print on paper) of a so called word painting by the artist SAXA (aka Dr. Sascha A. Lehmann) from Cologne - showing David Bowie

[the original work is ink on canvas (UV-varnish)]

This work of art is made only of words / quotations / lyrics of David Bowie, using varying width of the letters - nothing else !!

I made myself a little treat on an art exhibition at the beginning of the year (it's an autographed limited edition) ...

I am a big fan of David Bowie - so I couldn't help it :)

"ABSTRACT FIGURES" ~~ November 2020 Contest

This is for David Bowie - the news hit me this morning.

I fell in love with his music at the age of thirteen and since then I was delighted and inspired by his wide range of musical creativity.

Miss his brilliance already now.

Rest in peace, starman, your light is shining forever.

Old school cut & paste (paper, scissors & glue) created for the blog with a weekly challenge:

The Kollage Kit

www.kollagekit.blogspot.com

THEME: Speed

"Speed of Life" is the first instrumental by the late great David Bowie. The song is the opening track on the 1977 album "LOW". The image of David is from a scene in the movie "The Man Who Fell to Earth".

He is kissing John Lennon.

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song credited to Lennon–McCartney that appears on the Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. John Lennon started production of the song, and then Paul McCartney contributed to it in a songwriting session.

Have you seen an image of Pelé hugging some famous in the streets? It is the "Pele Beijoqueiro", a series of lambe-lambs by the artist Luis Bueno, 35, from São Paulo, present in walls and walls of several cities in Brazil.

Pele's Lambe-licks

Bueno has already put Pelé next to the Mona Lisa, of Leonardo da Vinci; characters from the "Star Wars" franchise; the painter Salvador Dalí and even the singer David Bowie, the biggest assembly of the series.

The lamb-lambes, artistic technique of assembly and collage, were inspired by a photo of Pelé embracing Muhammad Ali in 1977, in the United States.

"I fell in love with the image, which brought this gesture of affection and affection of a great symbol of Brazil that is Pelé. Immediately I realized that I could reconstruct the image and enjoy the gesture of the kiss, replacing Muhammad with other people," said Bueno , in an interview with Batanga.

The works are produced in stages. The artist took the photo and started a digital painting process that took months to get ready. Then it is scaled, separated into several parts for printing and cut manually. "Many pieces in the series are hand-painted too, which would be a fourth step," he says.

Pelé passed away yesterday in São Paulo, at the age of 82.

Rest in peace, King Pele.

Conrail SD40-2s-6423, 6380, GP38-2-8154 & SD40-2-6373 are on the point of a S/B UMP (Unit Morgantown Power) coal train. They've just passed under S. Hilton Street and are running on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor on track three. At Bowie, the train will make a left onto the Pope's Creek Secondary for the trip to MP.

UP CKSWE snakes along the Gunnison River through Dominguez Canyon in Bridgeport, Colorado after sunset behind a beat-up 2500-series GEVO leading a mix of company hoppers and older steel gondolas. The train is heading to West Elk Mine near Bowie, the last active coal mine on the North Fork Subdivision.

Freddie the sheep and Bacharach (far left) and Bowie the miniature goats, all named by the owner's three year old son who loves the music of each of his namesakes!

--- "The precision of the engineering is purely masterful. While it is unbelievably simple to change picks, one physically must give a gentle push to get the pick out. Doesn't take much effort at all, yet at the same time, the loop at the top prevents picks from just falling out on their own.

It really is wonderfully designed."

A position light "pot signal" governs all northward movements from CSX's Pope's Creek Subdivision to Amtrak's #1 main of the Northeast Corridor at Bowie MD. Behind the signal can be seen the Bowie interlocking tower which once controlled the movements at CP Bowie. The tower was replaced by a centralized dispatching center in Delaware known as CTEC sometime in 1987. In the mid 1990s the tower and two other structures were acquired and moved to their new locations by the City of Bowie and are now part of the Bowie Railroad Museum.

I actually cried when I realised he wasn't with us anymore :,(

I was 13 when I got the DVD of Labyrinth and I loved it so much <3

That's why I decided to make a Bowie tribute with a scene from this charming movie:

Do you have a favourite song by David Bowie? I think mine is most definitely Space Oddity.

This work is derived from the album The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars by David Bowie.

Original album art cover design credits: design by Terry Pastor of George Underwood's company, Main Artery, photo by Brian Ward. Album produced by David Bowie and Ken Scott. RCA 1972.

That's right kids, this used to be the only way you got ANY mail!

I might be dating myself with this shot but for me this is and was the only way you got any sort of mail. Think about it, how else can you possibly put a cherry bomb in someone's mail box?

This was shot up in Madrid, New Mexico. Madrid is an artist colony of sorts, at least it was when we were there. They're famous for the ending of the film Wild Hogs (2007) being set and filmed in the town and in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell To Earth, starring David Bowie the miners' houses on New Mexico Highway 14 can be seen.

Madrid used to be a company owned mining town and the Belinda Vasquez Garcia's novel, The Witch Narratives: Reincarnation (2012), is set in Madrid during the 1920s and 1930s.

Cool place to stop and have a Chai while you reinvigorate your Chi!

This is an early recording of David Bowie and The Feathers live in 1968, performing demos for the Space Oddity album. It includes two previously unreleased tracks.

(Actually recorded in February 1969, in David's bedroom at Clairville Grove, Chelsea).

A Conrail unit coal train crosses over from #3 to #1 main in order to access the Pope's Creek Secondary here at Bowie. The train will enter the "Creek" via the north leg of the wye adn then continue south to either Morgantown (likely) or Chalk Point, MD where coal fired electric generating plants await more fuel. Meanwhile, a vintage fire truck crosses the Amtrak main up on the Chestnut St overpass heading north. The overpass was built when the PRR electrified the mainline through Bowie. The bridge would be replaced in the mid 1990s by a wider bridge on a slightly new alignment. Kodacolor 200 110 negative, Minolta Pocket Autopak 460TX.

During our stay in Valldemossa we met Bowie, the watchdog of the owners of the finca where we lived.

We soon became best friends and I asked him to pose for the camera :) lovely dog!

Conrail SD40-2-6497, B23-7-1937 & three GP38-2s are S/B on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor with a UMP coal train for the Morgantown Generating Station in southern Maryland. Bowie the red fox on a log

Sorry for the crap bathroom mirror photo but it was late and that was that.

Which holidays do you celebrate, if any? Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, National Cheese Day (June 4th in case you were wondering...)

What is your favorite holiday tradition? my dad's side of the family always has oyster roasts this time of year and they're so much fun and good food. my mumma (finnish for grandma) always used to make boiled cookies and we still make those. my mom and i like to make sugar cookies and decorate them together. I love decorating the tree. Usual run of the mill kind of stuff. Also I LOVE wrapping presents. I'm kind of a freak about it. I wrap all the presents for our fam and my friends parents have even called and asked me to wrap presents for them! Oh and watching White Christmas. I've already watched it like 6 times.

For New Year's, are you a party animal or quiet night at home type? It depends on whats going on. This year I'll probably be at work and then maybe head over to a friend's house to watch the ball drop when I get off. I've done both.

What drives you banana hammocks about the holidays? Tempting foods? Relatives? Shopping? RELATIVES. My family can hold a grudge like no one's business, they bring stuff up that happened YEARS AGO. Let it go! Shopping can be hectic but I try to avoid huge stores and peak shopping times.

What's your "comfort" when getting "through" the holiday season? Crafting? Eating? Drinking? :o) Drunken Crafting. Heh. I usually get a little stressed out trying to finish last minute Christmas crafts so I keep a bottle of champagne chillin in the fridge...in case of emergencies.

Holiday foods you like

Did you see the holidays I celebrate? CHEESE. Cheese and I have a relationship. If I ever became lactose intolerant and we had to break up, you just better put me on suicide watch. I love Nyaker's Ginger Snaps. Hands dowwn the BEST ginger snaps ever created. I like christmas cookies and nissua. Its Finnish coffee bread, you can have it anytime I suppose but its just become a Christmas tradition in our family.

Holiday foods you despise

Eggnog and fruitcake. Eww. I'm not that big a fan of pumpkin pie either.

Foods you can't eat (allergies, etc.)

No allergies!

Favorite yarn(s)?

I am not a yarn snob but I do prefer natural fibers. I love workhorse yarns like Cascade 220 and Malabrigo. I'm really not picky as to weights, although I tend to use worsted the most. I'm definitely a semi solid or solid fan, not so crazy about variegated yarn. My favorite colors are green, blue, turquoise, brown, and grey.

Crafty pursuits - knit, crochet, spin, sew, quilt, any of these or others? I knit, sew, quilt, trying to learn to crochet and spin. I also make pottery and I'm currently in a lithography class, so I've been doing a lot of printmaking.

Hobbies/pursuits/proclivities/passions (other than the aforementioned crafty ones, obviously) I collect shells. Not joking, grew up at the beach and can name most of the common shells you pick up on the beach. I love the ocean, I go fishing with my family and snorkel around Topsail Island. Hoping to get scuba certified soon.

What do you do in life? (job, career, school, family, etc.) Currently attending Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Majoring in Studio Art with a concentration in Fibers. I've been thinking about adding Art Ed onto my major lately. Also work part time with Alzheimer's and Dementia patients at an Assisted Living Facility.

Random favorites -- books, movies, tv, genres, ice cream flavors, time of day, etc.

Books - Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Outlander Series, The Poisonwood Bible, The Secret LIfe of Bees, Geek Love, The Outsiders

Movies - Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy!), Bridget Jones's Diary, Singin' in the Rain, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Benny and Joon, Titanic, and the evergreen classic: Showgirls. We can learn a lot from Nomi Malone and Crystal Connors.

TV - The Office.

Music - Josh Ritter is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SINGER OF ALL TIME! I'm going to see him in Asheville in February and I'm sooooo excited. If you've never heard of him please go listen to these:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvCeCVmJAUA

www.youtube.com/watch?v=swtq5eig8oY

I've been known to listen to other people as well: Iron and Wine, Lykke Li, Ryan Adams, She and Him, Emmylou Harris, My Morning Jacket, Monsters of Folk, Radiohead, Ben Harper, Pearl Jam, Fleet Foxes, The Decemberists, Queen, David Bowie, The Who...the list goes on...

please favorite this photo to help us win $500 of free 3d-printing in the Shapeways photo contest! We'd love to use the credit to help us print out some new sculptural designs.

"And so the story goes they wore the clothes

They said the things to make it seem improbable

The whale of a lie like they hope it was

And the Goodmen Tomorrow

Had their feet in the wallow

And their heads of Brawn were nicer shorn

And how they bought their positions with saccharin and trust

And the world was asleep to our latent fuss

Sighing, the swirl through the streets

Like the crust of the sun

The Bewlay Brothers

In our Wings that Bark

Flashing teeth of Brass

Standing tall in the dark

Oh, And we were Gone

Hanging out with your Dwarf Men

We were so turned on

By your lack of conclusions

I was Stone and he was Wax

So he could scream, and still relax, unbelievable

And we frightened the small children away

And our talk was old and dust would flow

Thru our veins and Lo! it was midnight

Back at the kitchen door

Like the grim face on the Cathedral floor

And the solid book we wrote

Cannot be found today

And it was Stalking time for the Moonboys

The Bewlay Brothers

With our backs on the arch

In the Devil-may-be-here

But He can't sing about that

Oh, And we were Gone

Real Cool Traders

We were so Turned On

You thought we were Fakers

Now the dress is hung, the ticket pawned

The Factor Max that proved the fact

Is melted down

And woven on the edging of my pillow

Now my Brother lays upon the Rocks

He could be dead, He could be not

He could be You

He's Chameleon, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature

Shooting-up Pie-in-the-Sky

The Bewlay Brothers

In the feeble and the Bad

The Bewlay Brothers

In the Blessed and Cold

In the Crutch-hungry Dark

Was where we flayed our Mark

Oh, and we were Gone

Kings of Oblivion

We were so Turned On

In the Mind-Warp Pavilion

Lay me place and bake me Pie

I'm starving for me Gravy

Leave my shoes, and door unlocked

I might just slip away, hey

Just for the Day, Hey!

Hey, Please come Away, Hey!

Just for the Day, Hey!
