This work was inspired by a vivid dream I had at the end of 2011:

“I am held up against a wall by two people I love. They are ridiculing me for my beliefs, laughing at me for believing in the unseen world. I begin meditating within my dream in attempt to rid myself of this obstacle. I close my eyes with my head against the wall behind me and I ignore them. However, I get impatient with their taunting and I push myself away. Right at this moment I notice a swimming pool to my left. I see that above the water in the pool there are beautiful fish swimming in the air. They are pinkish silver and their bodies are soft and delicate like velvet. I am now standing inside of the pool which is empty and a man that I love appears next to me. As I am admiring the elegance of these floating fish, he takes one from the air and crushes it on the ground beneath his shoe. I see the silver velvet smear across the chalky pool floor."

I know when I awaken from this dream that I need to let go of those who are holding me back. I become determined that no matter what obstacles I face, even if I encounter those in the future who do not understand me, I will never lose faith in the fact that my spirit is truly boundless.

Oh boundless joy, following the vote to deprive my grandchildren of a wider future, the growing fear that I shall be ending my days in a narrower, less tolerant, culturally isolated and inward looking country with the political clout of Andorra, I find myself at a bloody telephone kiosk museum; my cup runneth over.

Blick über die Wetterau

This evening, I hiked the granite ridge trail with a friend. The light was so perfect as we approached the lookout and the silence was golden.

I love how the forest and sky just roll on in this image. It reminds me of a line from one of Andy Lowe's songs: "Bound for Nothern Ontario":

A boundless sky above a forest tall

Rolling on, far as the eye can see.

Sparkling waters, pure and free for all

In the land that holds my destiny.

"Duck Capital of America"

Gueydan, Louisiana

Vermilion Parish

For thousands of years, indigenous peoples lived along the waterways of Louisiana. They were able to hunt plentiful game and harvest fish from the rivers. In historic times, this area was inhabited by the Attakapa and Chitimacha.

In the early 1860s, Jean Pierre Gueydan, the founder of the European-American town, lived in Abbeville, Louisiana, about 30 miles east of present-day Gueydan. As had the Attapaka and earlier American Indian tribes, he often came to the future town site to hunt deer, ducks, geese, pheasant, cache-cache (Jack Snipe), papabottes, and other game. The area was a hunter's paradise. Game and fish were boundless.

In 1884 the brothers Jean-Pierre and François Gueydan purchased forty thousand acres (160 km²) of land described by surveyors as "sea marsh, unfit for cultivation", for twelve and one-half cents per acre. By 1896 a small portion of their purchase became known as the "Gueydan Pasture". It was chartered as a village when the population reached 250. Jean Pierre was the official founder of Gueydan, as by then he had purchased his brother's landholdings. In 1902, the settlement became the town of Gueydan.

Realizing the importance of a railroad to the rice farmers, Gueydan donated a section of land and extensive right-of-way to induce the Southern Pacific Railroad to build a branch line from Midland, Louisiana. Shortly after, he offered the first property lots for sale. Settlers began to arrive from other parts of the state and the rest of the country.

The town is the site of the annual Duck Festival, which is held the weekend before Labor Day, and is officially recognized as the Duck Capital of America.[4] The Louisiana state championships for duck and goose calling are held in conjunction with the festival.
