The Buff-fronted Owl is both a highly attractive and very poorly known owl, and is the sole member of the genus Aegolius to occur in South America. Its range there is rather widespread, but apparently highly disjunct, the species occurring in the Andes from northwest Venezuela to northern Peru, and then, equally locally, over much of the eastern third of South America, from northeast Brazil south to northeast Argentina, and Bolivia. Over this wide range, the Buff-fronted Owl is known from a wide variety of forest types, and has been recorded from sea level to the timberline. The face and underparts are largely buffy-colored, whilst the upperparts are dark brown, marked with white spots and bars on the wings and tail, respectively. Its whistled trilling vocalization recalls that of some screech-owls.
It's always a joy to find them and even more to be able to photograph!

Shanghai, China
December 2015
It was both a frustrating and interesting experience capturing both images from the Vue Bar in Shanghai. The Vue Bar offers such a magnificent aerial view of Shanghai - you can see both sides of the Huangpu River - the Bund on the Puxi side and the modern skyline on the Pudong side. However, I was not aware that tripods were not allowed. When I got to the bar, I met a fellow photographer - a photographer from Switzerland. He attemtped twice to set his camera up on one of these small table top tripods and was stopped by the security. I had my unopened regular tripod with me and when I saw how the security had earlier stopped the Swiss photographer, I knew there was no way I could use my tripod. So the rest of the evening was desperately spent trying to balance my camera as steady as I could on my camera backpack and capturing night shots without the use of a proper tripod. As you can guess, the other photographer was as irritated as I was with the security issues we both faced that night. I don't have many usable shots from Vue and these 2 images I am posting here are acceptable but by no means the best that they could be.

From both many and from a few years ago on this date in my archives. Slid to capture that old times feel.
Fear can both be a good thing and a bad thing. In this case, having some healthy fear meant that once the lightning strikes became much more frequent and the wall cloud began to form, it was a wise decision to find a safer vantage point. Some things are immensely beautiful, but are also incredibly powerful and deserve the utmost respect. As I think of severe storms, dangerous mountain climbs, and raging waterfalls as a few examples of such things, I think about their Creator; the One who deserves our ultimate and utmost reverence!
I took both the tours of Blanchard Springs Caverns in Arkansas. I'd never heard of this place, but it had huge underground rooms with lots of elaborate cave decorations like this and was every bit as good as Carlsbad Caverns. I didn't have a tripod, so I braced the camera on the railings where I could.

Sacred Kingfisher
Scientific Name: Todiramphus sanctus
Description: The Sacred Kingfisher is a medium sized kingfisher. It has a turquoise back, turquoise blue rump and tail, buff-white underparts and a broad cream collar. There is a broad black eye stripe extending from bill to nape of neck. Both sexes are similar, although the female is generally lighter with duller upper parts. Young birds are similar to the female, but have varying amounts of rusty-brown edging to feathers on the collar and underparts, and buff edges on the wing coverts.
Distribution: The Sacred Kingfisher is common and familiar throughout the coastal regions of mainland Australia and less common throughout Tasmania. The species is also found on islands from Australasia to Indonesia and New Zealand.
Habitat: The Sacred Kingfisher inhabits woodlands, mangroves and paperbark forests, tall open eucalypt forest and melaleuca forest.
Seasonal movements: In Australia, Sacred Kingfishers spend the winter in the north of their range and return south in the spring to breed.
Feeding: Sacred Kingfishers forage mainly on the land, only occasionally capturing prey in the water. They feed on crustaceans, reptiles, insects and their larvae and, infrequently, fish. The birds perch on low exposed branch on the lookout for prey. Once prey is located, the Sacred Kingfisher swoops down and grasps it in its bill, returning to the perch to eat it.
Breeding: For most of the year Sacred Kingfishers are mainly solitary, pairing only for the breeding season. Usually two clutches are laid in a season. Both sexes excavate the nest, which is normally a burrow in a termite mound, hollow branch or river bank. The nest chamber is unlined and can be up to 20m above the ground. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young.
Calls: The voice of the Sacred Kingfisher is a loud "ek ek ek ek" repeated continuously throughout breeding season. Birds also give a "kee kee kee" in excitement and a series of chirring, scolding notes when alarmed.
Minimum Size: 19cm
Maximum Size: 24cm
Average size: 21cm
Average weight: 45g
Breeding season: September to December; occasionally extended to March, if conditions are favourable.
Clutch Size: 3 to 6
Incubation: 18 days
Nestling Period: 26 days

Sadly both of these White-tailed deer had somehow injured their rear legs. The doe was hobbling fairly badly.
The white-tailed deer is tan or brown in the summer and grayish brown in winter. It has white on its throat, around its eyes and nose, on its stomach and on the underside of its tail. The male has antlers. Males weigh between 150 and 300 pounds and females weigh between 90 and 200 pounds.

The buildings were both started in 1885 with the Jail opening in 1886 and the Court House in 1887. Originally, the Council had decided to open the buildings on the date of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee which was June 22, 1887. It was suggested to allow $500.00 to pay for the festivities. However, the money was returned to a general fund as it was never spent because the buildings were opened instead on May 9, at the beginning of the spring assizes
George F. Durand was born in 1850 to Scottish parents. His artistic ability encouraged his father to enroll him in Peel’s Art School, London, where after two years of study, specializing in marble sculpturing, Durand began his studies in architecture in apprenticeship with London architect, William Robinson. After completing his apprenticeship, Durand moved to the United States, where he helped with the designs of the New York State Capital Building for a short time.

Both Lavender and Honey Bees originated in the Mediterranean region and were introduced to California in the 1800's. There are now over 1.5 million beehives in California and are essential to the agricultural industry.
Lavender is a member of the mint family and is grown commercially for its oil and culinary uses. The honey produced by bees pollinating lavender fields will carry the lovely scent and taste of the flower.

Taken just as the bluebell and garlic season was coming to an end as the beech leaves started blocking the light to the woodland floor. The contrast of fresh green beech leaves with the blue flowers was lovely.

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE – ELVIS PRESLEY
Sometimes in life we come full circle
I see a footprint of my beginning
and here I am back at the start
I see the people who tried to stop me winning
but I rise above them; and leave them far behind
I draw a line in shifting, whispering grains of sand
and something deep inside me drives me on
no looking back; I am complete; I understand
sometimes in life we cannot win them over
it's not our job; it's for a greater Hand
and He will guide me on my journey
bring me safely to the shore
where angels sing; rejoice and hold me
and I will not be frightened any more
He sees in us the pain; the human burden
He sees the weight that life and people bring
He knows how much; He knows and He is certain
He will not give us more than we can take
so that in our hearts and souls we'll always sing
and when at last our cup is brimming over
He lays his Hand upon our heads and soothes our brow
and we feel the greatest love that ever found us
and we are comforted and lighter; it is a miracle somehow
and once more we are peaceful
finding joy in simple things
as darkness; shadows and all our plights
are left behind and taken care of;
whisked away on angel's wings
and soon the lines of strain are smoothed; not furrowed
as clouds reveal the stars of wonder and ethereal light
and we begin to live at last the ever after; forget tomorrow
this moment we exist; and in this moment
I am complete; I am content right here, right now.

both beautiful.
Leon does the flowers to bring in the house. He picked the roses yesterday and then found the dandelions this morning. he brought them to show me and I told him to add them to the roses.
weeds can be pretty, too.
I am weeding, put in 4 hours this morning which is a lot for me. I'm trying to get to my roses. there are weeds there that are taller than I am. and I found that the gophers had gotten all my walking iris which were so pretty last year. I found a few roots with new babies trying to start. so in the morning before I start weeding and pulling brambles I'll round up some big pots and try to start some new plants. the gophers do not help me.
I'm hoping I can get some of the walking iris to grow again.

Common in varied wooded and forested habitats, parks, gardens, farmland with hedges and scattered trees. Forms flocks in winter; often visits garden feeders. Handsome, brightly colored male is distinctive, with bluish cowl, pink face and breast, black-and-white wing pattern (colors muted in winter). Female much drabber but shares male pattern; especially note the complex wing pattern. Both sexes have white outer tail feathers, often striking in flight such as when flushed. (eBird)

We encountered chaffinchs (another introduced species) over much of the country, but did not stop to photograph them too often since our focus was on native birds. This female, though, was in a parking area so I took advantage of the opportunity.
