This was a cool looking place along the highway to Golden in BC.

Last year, a few friends and I flew off to Minnesota to visit with the various owls found in Sax-Zim Bog. We donned our heaviest of jackets, warm boots, gloves, and head gear ... braving temperatures of minus 45 degrees with the wind chill. Lucky for us, it was an irruption year, meaning higher numbers of these amazing creatures. Yes, it was absolutely frigid, but I sure warmed up when we encountered them. This absolute cutie is the Boreal Owl, a small, but chunky owl, normally very difficult to find in the daylight hours, but this one just made my day! Still warms my heart even just looking at this image. LOL. In all, we spotted 6 different species of owls, but none as special as this one. :-)

Happy New Year everyone!!

Bog laurel has brilliant pink flowers and narrow leaves on a diminutive shrub. The flowers brighten up bogs in mid-summer.

It is beautiful, but deadly, its poisonous foliage and nectar filled with toxic resins called grayanotoxins.Every part of Kalmia polifolia is highly toxic and poisonous to animals and persons and caribou only can safely digest it.

A rainy day was perfect for visiting this bog.

"Cors Caron National Nature Reserve is a vast area of wetland filling the broad valley of the River Teifi near Tregaron.

The three raised peat bogs are surrounded by reedbeds, fen, wet grassland, woodland, waterways and ponds, and these varied habitats support a wealth of wildlife.

The fully accessible boardwalk goes over the south-east bog and to the large bog hide where you can enjoy a peaceful view of the landscape and wildlife." (Natural Resources Wales)

Thanks for looking, faves and comments :)

As the long, hot summer continues, it is important to find some cooler spots where I can take Fara for a walk. These woods near Fochabers in Morayshire, Scotland were the perfect solution after a swim in the sea. I was surprised to find this patch of Bog Cotton growing amongst the trees so took advantage of the situation and grabbed my camera whilst there was nice, dappled light moving through the forest.

This was a permission visit after sunrise.

A revisit to a local scrapyard that had loads of barn finds and salvage vehicles. Due to the council and environmental changes, a lot of the stuff had to be removed but there were some bits n pieces left in the buildings.

I keep fotographing this path, because I like it so much and there is always a different mood here, whenever I visit the place.

Love is...

Driving someone 90 miles to walk around an 8 sq. miles mosquito infested bog, to find a plant you cannot see properly without a magnifying glass. YES! I found it. I have wanted to see this since I was a kid. There were a few flys caught too and flower stems.

We saw amazing things today.

Northern Grass of Parnassus (Parnassia Palustris)

In Sumner, Maine, on a foggy morning.

Deceivingly solid looking ground beside the trail. A step or two that way would leave you up to your knees in the boggy earth.

Close up of a bog star, Alaska grass of Parnassus (Parnassia palustris L. var. palustris) with pink central ovule (seed pod) and stigma tip, surrounded by pollen-bearing anthers, and tiny hairs tipped with nectariferous, honey-like droplets, a scent attractive to pollinators.

My recent postings have (surprisingly) been crowd pleasers, so I thought I'd restore a bit of balance with an abstract...

Home of PDX Toxic. I was here a long time ago and didn't realize it was the same place as it's been totally redone. I dug up this old pic and realized I got an invite 16 months ago and never saw. Who knew ??

Love the smell of this

Near Ledreborg, Lejre, Denmark

I want to smell a turf fire. I have no open fire in my house any more, but I do love the smell of burning peat.

This is a bog that was cut just today. The turfs will lie in the sun to dry for several weeks and then they will be turned, and stacked.

They will be brought home later in the Summer and burned in the winter.
