American Peony Society: Hybrid, herbaceous single. Parentage tenuifolia x unknown. First bloomed, unknown. Deep red single, flat form, stamens gold, reliable, good substance, stigmas red, strong, 24″ stems, very hardy, early bloom, fine cut, bright deep green foliage, good branching. Bloom is 5″ in diameter, petals 2.5″ wide. This plant may have been known as Zelda in the Goldsmith collection, as it was labeled Zelda in the field. Introduced by Hollingsworth/Smetana, July 25, 1994.

 

Red, single, fragrant, early, 30in. tall, hybrid. Bright crimson flowers with yellow centers stand tall on the unusual ferny-leafed plant. . Award of Landscape Merit 2009. Wilted after bloom, 2014. Parentage tenuifolia x unknown. Single stem came up near by, have to wait to see (2015). Still alive in G3. Four stems in 2020.

Planted in 2020.

 

Paeonia 'President Franklin D. Roosevelt' (Franklin, 1933). Bred by Alonzo Barry Franklin (1858-1944), Franklin Nursery, Minneapolis, MN. Double flower form, large, rose-red with a possible purple hue (color fades with age and white edging has been observed). A tall plant. Staking is usually required. Mr. Franklin released close to 100 peonies between 1928-1942. A few are still popular today: Mrs. A. B. Franklin, A B Franklin, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Minuet.

 

Mildew in 2020, still no blooms. Need to move. Moved to n4,07b on 10/8/2020. Had many buds, but I did not divide. Looking good in 2023.

Paeonia 'Bowl of Beauty' (Hoogendoorn, Netherlands, 1949) is a 32” pink lactiflora cultivar. A Japanese type bloom, very fragrant, midseason. Guard petals are fuchsine rose, staminodes are pale lemon yellow (creamy). Sometimes rose petals are mixed in with the staminoides. Flowers can reach up to 12" in diameter. Hoogendoom registered a total of 7 peony cultivars, all in 1949.

 

2020 note: Fairly certain this is not Bowl of Beauty. Reviewed Michigan Bulbs peony list and did not see any peony that looks like this. Is one of a few peonies that displayed mildew in 2020. Not true to name.
