Nurses celebrate Juneteenth by standing up for black lives
June 19, many black people across the country celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865, a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery, that slaves in Galveston, Texas actually learned that they were free people. They were among the last group to know, and in black communities, Juneteenth represents freedom.
This year’s Juneteenth was unlike any other. Across the country, black, brown and indigenous people and all supporters of justice turned out to demand that that promise of freedom is fulfilled. As we head into the Juneteenth weekend, many nurses are standing up for black lives and demanding racial justice for our patients.

Blackwell Island was once home to a bustling timber mill. Decades after the mill shut down, the Bureau of Land Management acquired this 17-acre island in 1993 for public recreation and conservation purposes. Blackwell Island now offers the public access to a range of recreational activities on Lake Coeur d'Alene.
