Well if something doesn't remind you of the futility of war, this memorial does. Nothing wrong with the lovely oak that is more than 120 years old, but something is truly amiss in who and what it memorialises.
The old oak remembers the Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902), the first war in which the as yet unfederated Australian colonies sent troops overseas to fight. It wasn't our fight, but of course in trying to prove we were loyal members of the British Empire, fight we did. And what did this war achieve in the end? A victory for Britain over the Dutch immigrant settlers, the Boers, but a pyrrhic one at best.
For the 20th century saw the introduction to South Africa of a racist regime that virtually enslaved the majority black people, until a long struggle by people like Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko, assisted by an international campaign of embargoes and sanctions, finally broke the back of apartheid. Apartheid was the Boer word for segregation. Well may we remember!
But it is also bizarre that this tree memorialises Colonel Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941), better known around the world as the founder of the Scout movement. That a British soldier with no links to Australia was remembered here at the beginning of Australian Federation tells us as much about the attitudes of white Australians at the time as did the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901 (otherwise known as the White Australia policy). This act was designed to turn Australia into a bastion of white privilege in the southern hemisphere.
On this Remembrance Day, November 11, 2025, we do well to remember more than the wars we fought in (often unnecessarily), but also our chequered history of race relations.

Arriving from Rome.
17th June 2023 Birmingham Utilita Arena.
The final encore was Biko, no surprise there.
( I was supposed to be going to the concert on Tuesday in Nottingham but that has been cancelled due to 'logistical' reasons so I got to go to Birmingham on Saturday instead with better seats, a free programme and T shirt for the inconvenience. I was invited to the sound check too but by the time I got there it had finished, just ! - it only took half an hour)
Fabulous concert , half of it new music from the forthcoming I/O album some already released , some not, all good or great. Some stunning modern art imagery from the likes of Ai Weiwei and others as part of the show.

My heart hurts! Our beautiful gentle giant, Biko, died last night. We had some concerns yesterday, took him to the emergency hospital and he went pretty quickly. We were glad that he didn't have to suffer long.
Biko came into our lives in 1997 when we moved to San Antonio. He was our first "child" and will always be remembered with his sweet disposition and gentle nature! He was named after my friend Maggie's dog (also Biko) who was also a gentle giant. Little did I know that when he picked his name, the personality would follow.
Biko brought great joy to our lives... from when he was little and refused to get into our truck to go on rides. Even when we would pick him up, he would splay his legs to try and avoid being put in the crate.
He rarely barked, but brown uniforms would set him off! (the poor UPS guy!) He grew to be a BIG dog and had a bark (when he would bark) that matched. When he was younger and we would run together, I always felt safe with him by my side!
He learned early on that following commands brought treats... and was very eager to please! He could do simple tricks and walk long walks without being on the leash. He loved nothing more than to be petted... and would make sure that his head would find your hand - even if that wasn't your plan. He was great with kids and other dogs and never met a stranger!
He traveled with us, slept with us, played with us, and we loved him and our lives were enriched with him in it!
Even though he was 11, he left us way too early!
We miss him terribly.

Nationality: South African
Role: Medical student, full-time political activist
Main cause: Founder and leader of the Black Consciousness Movement, promoting pride, dignity, and rights for black people during apartheid
Activity: Organized students and black communities, promoted political awareness and self-esteem against systemic white racism in South Africa
Conflict with the regime: Openly criticized the apartheid government and became a symbol of resistance, considered a threat by the white ruling power
Death: Arrested by police in 1977, brutally tortured in prison, and died from his injuries at the age of 30. His death sparked international outrage and turned him into a symbol of the struggle against apartheid.
This series honors individuals who gave their lives standing for justice and human rights.
It is published to remind the world of those who have always been exploited by a small, corrupt elite in power.
The purpose is to awaken consciences and keep the memory of their courage alive.
