Without any safety measures, precariously perched a 100 feet above the ground a worker demolishes the illegally built BGMEA building.
After numerous delays and rescheduling, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association. (BGMEA) building, is finally about to be demolished. Eight years after the high court declared it illegal, the building, built illegally on partially filled land in Begunbari canal, still stands tall despite many illegal buildings having been demolished by RAJUK over this period. The demolition, while delayed, still marks a win for Bangladeshi environmentalists who have long been campaigning for its removal. 12:00 pm Tuesday 16th April 2019. Dhaka. The High Court had issued the verdict in 2010, following its suo moto ruling based on a news report on the issue. It found the building illegal as it was constructed violating the law protecting the country’s wetlands.
After numerous appeals, eventually the supreme court, in March 2017, gave BGMEA six months to demolish the illegally constructed building.

Bilboard showing the burned carcass of Tazreen Fashions. The 2012 Dhaka fire broke out on 24 November 2012, in the Tazreen Fashion factory in the Ashulia district on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. At least 117 people were confirmed dead in the fire, and over 200 were injured, making it the deadliest factory fire in the nation's history. This event and others similar to it have led to a demand for reforms in workers' rights and safety laws in Bangladesh, though numerous other accidents have taken place, notably the collapse of Rana Plaza where over a thousand workers died.

To oversee the safety of the Bangladesh garment industry, a Remediation Coordination Cell (RCC) was launched in May 2017.
The RCC has been established through the collaboration of the Government of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA). Trade unions and international buyers have been consulted on its development while technical support is provided by the ILO.
