The Waxing Gibbous on August 10 has an illumination of 96%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On August 10 the Moon is 12.96 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases. Moongiant

A different POV of a Banksia flower taken from the end of the flower head at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens.

If you look closely you can see the styles breaking out of the perianth of each flower. The end of the style carries the stigma and the bud shaped tip will split to become the anthers.

Best viewed enlarged for the details.

There are 173 Banksia species, and all but one occur naturally only in Australia.

Banksias were named after Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820 ), who, in 1770, was the first European to collect specimens of these plants.

The flower heads are made up of hundreds (sometimes thousands) of tiny individual flowers grouped together in pairs.

The colour of the flower heads usually ranges from yellow to red. Many species flower over autumn and winter.

Many thanks for your visit, comments, invites and faves..it is always appreciated.

Lyrics by Jones 2.0, Fearless Soul | Music Composed by Patrick Rundblad

Transcript – “I AM ME” Official Music Video – Fearless Soul

I AM ME.

I’ll never pretend to be another.

I will never want to BE another.

I will not change who I am just to fit in.

I AM ME.

I am not perfect… but I’m working on myself… working to become the best version of myself.

I’m not putting on a mask no more

The true me can’t stay hidden

I’m not putting on a show no more

I’m not gonna act to fit in

Yeah I might not be perfect

but I’m working on my best version

I’m on my way

Yes I’m on my way

If I have to I’ll walk alone

Being myself is all that I know

Want me to change to fit in?

I won’t.

I am me.

I can’t pretend to be what I’m not

In my own way I know I am strong

I am free to do what I want

I am me.

If I have to I’ll walk alone

Being myself is all that I know

Want me to change to fit in?

I won’t.

I am me.

I can’t pretend to be what I’m not

In my own way I know I am strong

I am free to do what I want

I am me.

Yes I am

I am me

I’m not putting on a mask no more

I’ve got my own life to live

There’s so much more I can give

I walk my own path

I won’t pretend to be another

Never want to be another

Won’t apologize for being me

That’s all I can be.

Yeah I might not be perfect

But I’m working on my best version

I’m on my way

Yeah I’m on my way

If I have to I’ll walk alone

Being myself is all that I know

Want me to change to fit in?

I won’t.

I am me.

I can’t pretend to be what I’m not

Barn Owl - Tyto Alba

Like most owls, the barn owl is nocturnal, relying on its acute sense of hearing when hunting in complete darkness. It often becomes active shortly before dusk and can sometimes be seen during the day when relocating from one roosting site to another. In Britain, on various Pacific Islands and perhaps elsewhere, it sometimes hunts by day. This practice may depend on whether the owl is mobbed by other birds if it emerges in daylight. However, in Britain, some birds continue to hunt by day even when mobbed by such birds as magpies, rooks and black-headed gulls, such diurnal activity possibly occurring when the previous night has been wet making hunting difficult. By contrast, in southern Europe and the tropics, the birds seem to be almost exclusively nocturnal, with the few birds that hunt by day being severely mobbed.

Barn owls are not particularly territorial but have a home range inside which they forage. For males in Scotland this has a radius of about 1 km (0.6 mi) from the nest site and an average size of about 300 hectares. Female home ranges largely coincide with that of their mates. Outside the breeding season, males and females usually roost separately, each one having about three favoured sites in which to conceal themselves by day, and which are also visited for short periods during the night. Roosting sites include holes in trees, fissures in cliffs, disused buildings, chimneys and haysheds and are often small in comparison to nesting sites. As the breeding season approaches, the birds move back to the vicinity of the chosen nest to roost.

Once a pair-bond has been formed, the male will make short flights at dusk around the nesting and roosting sites and then longer circuits to establish a home range. When he is later joined by the female, there is much chasing, turning and twisting in flight, and frequent screeches, the male's being high-pitched and tremulous and the female's lower and harsher. At later stages of courtship, the male emerges at dusk, climbs high into the sky and then swoops back to the vicinity of the female at speed. He then sets off to forage. The female meanwhile sits in an eminent position and preens, returning to the nest a minute or two before the male arrives with food for her. Such feeding behaviour of the female by the male is common, helps build the pair-bond and increases the female's fitness before egg-laying commences.

Barn owls are cavity nesters. They choose holes in trees, fissures in cliff faces, the large nests of other birds such as the hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) and, particularly in Europe and North America, old buildings such as farm sheds and church towers. Buildings are preferred to trees in wetter climates in the British Isles and provide better protection for fledglings from inclement weather. Trees tend to be in open habitats rather than in the middle of woodland and nest holes tend to be higher in North America than in Europe because of possible predation.

This bird has suffered declines through the 20th century and is thought to have been adversely affected by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT in the 1950s and '60s.

Nocturnal birds like the barn owl are poorly monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey and, subject to this caveat, numbers may have increased between 1995-2008.

Barn owls are a Schedule 1 and 9 species.

How lucky I have become?

My travels now define me, the thoughts of where I've been put a smile on my face...

The thought of a future trip brings out the child in me, so excited and giddy.

this photo makes me laugh^^^

As I remember it;

I had just got into Yellowstone, National Park, this lake was on my left hand side, I pulled over into a turn off,

grabbed my gear and headed down to the shore.

I found out I was at Lewis lake (fyi)...,

Setting up at sunrise It was a little cold, off in the distance as I snapped the shutter a crow kept jawing away at me... he was not happy i was there.

I kept laughing at how much noise this bird made.

End result this photo.

Can you become

Can you become

A new version of you

The reason for the name ‘Cathedral Grove’ becomes immediately obvious only a few minutes into visiting. Soaring towards the sky, these huge trees form their own beautiful cathedral of nature.

Featuring a magnificent temperate rainforest with enormous 800 year old trees, a carpet of ferns and draping moss, Cathedral Grove is an essential stop on any Vancouver Island road trip.

Officially known as MacMillan Provincial Park, the trees in Cathedral Grove are amongst the oldest and tallest in Canada.

It’s a humbling experience to stand next to these incredibly tall and gnarled tree trunks, some as wide as a car. The tree canopy is up to 80 metres high in places, with the sky a distant proposition. As you walk through the forest, beams of sunlight filter through the branches above, illuminating so many layers of green.

Normally I'm here to show you Croydon car parks but here's one from another part of London, in Stratford, in East London, to be precise. For someone that likes to shoot architecture car parks are always an interesting challenge. They are usually very symmetrical with distinguishable lines and shapes. There's always likely to be an abundance of light and shadow because car parks are likely to not be fully enclosed, leaving room for lots of contrasts in tone and light. If I go past a car park I always look for a composition of some kind.

I've subtitled this 'when day becomes night' because this image was a post processing challenge that I set myself. This shot was actually taken in the middle of the day, at 1pm to be exact. I wanted to see if I could make it appear as if was taken at 1am instead.

Isolated from other walls and buttes working to become isolated pillars, Standing Rock is a well known feature of Monument Basin in Canyonlands, often seen and photographed from Grandview Point on Island in the Sky 2000’ / 600 m above. The north-facing slopes still hold snow from a significant storm 3 days prior to when this photo was taken.

Standing Rock was first climbed in 1962 by Layton Kor and colleagues, because as they put it “it won’t always be there.” They described the Organ Rock shale that the pillar is made of as "layers of rye-krisp sandwiched between layers of kitty litter." As you might guess few people have been on the summit of this 300’ / 90 m tower.

I had visited this area a year ago, managing to get a flat tire and lacking the appropriate lug nuts for the spare… that saga is best forgotten ;-). This year’s trip was successful in that I managed to drive the entire White Rim road, though the conditions were tricky at times with snow, ice, and slippery mud on steep slopes. The weather was also dicey at times with high winds, occasional snow, and cold temperatures. But hey, dramatic weather sometimes yields beautiful scenes.

hand bags and glad rags by Rod Stewart

"Sing a song of six-pence for your sake

And drink a bottle full of rye

Four and twenty blackbirds in a cake

And bake them all in a pie

They told me you missed school today

So what I suggest you just throw them all away

The handbags and the gladrags

That your poor old Granddad had to sweat to buy you"

“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.”

Most of you know I have a small obsession with feathers. I just love their patterned, colourful beauty and intricacy. When my nephew is with me, he and I spend a lot of time on our walks looking at the ground!

I found these blue beauties across the road from my home. I think they've most likely become detached from a Crimson Rosella, although there are a few other possible candidates. And yes, the feathers really are that blue.

Truly I tell you: if you do not convert and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever becomes as small as this child will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes even one of these children in my name welcomes me. Beware of despising just one of these little ones, because I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. (Matt. 18 1-5)

Dumps in former mining areas have become part of the landscape over time. This is exactly what the Förderverein Bergbau Erbe Saar e.V. Ensdorf/Saar did not want to happen. It wanted "a symbol for the 250-year mining tradition on the Saar... and for the necessary new beginning and structural change thereafter! "He succeeded in doing this by organising a competition and the winning project by Pfeiffer Sachse Architekten. The Duhamel slag heap is once again becoming a landmark. A new unity emerges from the interplay between the heaviness of the slag heap and the lightness of the polygon. Both the slag heap and the project reinforce each other's effect. Although static as an object, the polygon appears almost kinetic and has a completely different effect depending on the view. Sometimes almost unstable, like a triangle on a point, sometimes broadly dominant. From a distance, the figure is almost intriguing because it cannot be grasped directly. Then, on the approach and ascent, it disappears, only to unfold all the more dramatically in all its facets on arrival at the plateau. The polygon becomes both a stage for the far-reaching view and a magnet for the view from a distance, a land art that also fulfils a functional function as a viewing platform. With simple means from the production of industrial culture, a spatial framework made of sectional steel has been created here, a sculpture that emerged from local steel production. A complex effect was achieved with simple means. The artificial light effect has also emerged from the structure and enhances its effect at dusk with discreet use. This project between land art and steel construction is an extremely successful sign for the client, the architects and engineers. It is an understandable and at the same time an emotional project for everyone, far beyond the region.

Once the weather becomes warmer, the Western Boxelder bugs leave the warmth of our houses and start exploring the great outdoors. Even though I appreciate knowing who or what is sharing my abode, I do appreciate that they vacate the premises for awhile. ;) There's great information to be found here...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxelder_bug

Albufeira is a coastal city in the southern Algarve region of Portugal. It’s a former fishing village that has become a major holiday destination, with sandy beaches, [a waterfront promenade] and a busy nightlife strip. Local fishermen now use the modern marina, also a base for diving, dolphin-watching and boat trips.― Google

No wonder orchids have become so popular. Once considered difficult to keep, I now have two that seem to be happy in their current position.

I love the intricate composition and have taken many macro shots of the interior, but as this one was illuminated in the morning sunlight coming through the window, I could see an angel emerging.

Lamentations 1:21 “They have heard that I groan; There is no one to comfort me, all my enemies have heard of my disaster; They are joyful that You have done it. Oh, that You would bring the day which You have proclaimed, so that they will become like me.”

White sand usually becomes pink or blue at sunset…especially when the sky was like that.

This tiny hawk has become a regular visitor near my bird feeders. It is so small, about the size of a dove, that I usually have trouble finding it when it is visiting. But when I see birds at the feeders suddenly take off as a group I know that the hawk is somewhere in the vicinity. I was lucky this time, as the hawk was sitting on a large branch in an open area, in full view of my camera. Unfortunately the only way that I could get any shots of it was to aim the camera through a dirty window, into a very overcast sky. Not the best photo, but neverless I'm satisfied with it. Backyard bird.

We have the bubbly in our sight! Thank you all SO much for your support for our 365 Days Blythe, starring in my stream, (not the group! haha...I just re-read that...she is only my little star) my baby, La Mer! Honestly, I am so emotional these days, that I am tearing up as I type! One year! But could I have continued without all of your sweet comments and encouragement? I don't think so! So...La Mer and I say a thousand thanks and lots of love to my wonderful flickr friends!!!!

It's a WRAP!

Will you still see LOTS of La Mer in 2009? LOL...she has become my confidante, my best friend...how could you not? We are closer than ever! Instead of being sick of her, I am all the closer to her. I adore her.

La Mer is wearing a tutu by Blythe Chic...you know we love you, Cagla!!!!

I took this photo of the Wolf Moon (the first full moon of 2022) on 18th January 2022. It appeared so near and large and I used a similar technique to the one I used with one of my first photographs added to Flickr, with the setting sun, framing the moon with some garden foliage.

Since my first upload of the setting sun in 2015 I have become confident converting a number of my colour photographs to black and white (as is the case with this one). I really enjoy the creativity that I can achieve with tonal values in black and white images.

It was interesting to see that this image was also taken with a trusty compact (three versions later), although I now have a bridge camera and a 4/3 mirrorless camera.
