We saw the Beast while visiting Liberty Island in the NY/NJ harbor. The following is a blurb from their website. You will have to wait til May if you want a ride.

Down at the end of our street were three houses and the entry to the river. Behind these houses were some tall trees that took on the shapes of terrifying giants. Behind those trees lived a race of red giants who were veiled in mystery. They never harmed anyone but might stroll out into our neighborhood at night. They were protectors.

This is what should have been the start to a new 30-days-vignette-collection, this time not Harry Potter, but Fantastic Beasts.

But please, don’t get your hopes up, since I’ve cancelled this series. Let’s say that I’ve become a little frustrated with some of TLG’s marketing strategies and therefore lost interest in this project – or better, my motivation is gone by now.

Anyway, since I’ve built them, I thought I might as well upload them. At least the 3 that I’ve finished completely.

I rented this lens this weekend, as you get 3 days for price of 2 on long weekends hehe...and i wanted to try the 85 focal length, as im planning on buying an 85mm. Also i had a trash the dress this weekend (and also a funeral). this is the 85 1.2.....when you see pictures of the 5D, you'll see this big ass lens onthe front of it...its this one. It seems to have a HUGE front element, despite it only being 72mm (by comparison, most L lenses have 77mm elements, and the 16-35 has 82!).....

i took this with the lens facing outwards of my condo, i love how you can see the cityscape in different chromic colours in the lens!

anyway, this lens is 2400....and i can say (samples coming soon) that it possibly has the best bokeh and background blur out there, hands down....if your person is even 1-2 feet away from the background, it will just disappear into an amazing blur of colours, its simply amazing. And it gives new meaning to taking portraits at big apertures...at f1.2, it gives a certain something to faces.

People say its heavy! well, i guess its heavy for a prime, but compared to other lenses (70-200 f2.8 IS come to mind) its nothing...certainly well balanced for a 5D. image quality, colour, contrast, etc all worth the 2 grand. and if you ever had to take a picture in the dark? slap 5D on 3200, f1.2, and there you go...nighttime photography!

BUT!! its not all good.....

the USM is a sucky USM....its slow. autofocus on this beast, considering its got a 1.2 aperture to use, is slow, im talking 60mm macro type slow...ratchets, and on 5D, is slow. Also, the manual focus ring is loose (might have just be my rental), and it doesnt work if the power is off.

this means that, if you have it on close focus, the little lens telescopes out a bit...maximum about 2 cms....and it will be stuck out there unless you turn camera power on, ratchet it back in, then turn it off again...very poor considering 2400 dollar lens.

also, gotta watch the back element, it is very vulnerable to damage when mounting the lens.

technically, it is quite hard to shoot with 1.2 aperture....your focussing plane is about a gazillionth of a decimal place in width....you have to focus very precisely, and keep refocusing...and with the slow autofocus, this is not always easy to do....and you definately cant focus and recompose, it will throw it out.

so all in all, in my very amateur opinion, it aint worth 2400 bucks when the 85 1.8 is so goood for 300 bucks....

there are no roads from the pier up to St. Anne's Skete. It is a half hour walk up two thousand some steps. All imported food and building supplies are delivered by mules.

No idea what the story is behind this thing, but it sure makes a change from the normal high street furniture.

This is Mendarièn.

He's a powerful planetary spirit or earth god. Calm and strong. He adopted a race of wonderful people because he felt drawn towards them and gradually loved them dearly.

The inspiration for his faceup comes from the Greenman mask. A very interesting concept, and first for me.

Mendarièn is a Soom Beast. <3
