The third generation of Lotus Esprit launched in 1981. Still to the original Giorgetto Giugiaro penned design. with both the normally aspirated and Turbo versions sharing a common chassis, inheriting much of the configuration of the Essex cars, whilst body production was based on a single common set of moulds. The interior for both cars was revised and featured new trim; combined with changes to the body moulds this resulted in more headroom and an enlarged footwell. Both models were supplied with 15inch BBS alloy wheels.
The S3 received the 2.2 L Type 912 engine. The Turbo Esprit had a wet sump engine with the same power and torque output as its dry sump predecessor. Interior trim was revised which, when combined with changes to the body moulds, resulted in more headroom and an enlarged foot-well. The Turbo Esprit retained the aerodynamic body kit of the Essex cars and featured prominent turbo esprit decals on the nose and sides.
The S3 gained the new larger bumpers but kept the simpler sill line and glazed rear hatch of the S2.2 body. Both cars came with 381 mm (15 in) BBS alloy wheels.
A Esprit Series 1 starred as Wet Nellie the behind-the-scenes name given to a custom-built submarine, created for the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me in the shape of a Lotus Esprit S1 sports car. The Esprit was chosen to give James Bond a glamorous car to drive. The Wet Nellie name is both a reference to the cars submarine abilities, and to Little Nellie a Girocopter previously used by James Bond
