Nouka Baich / Boat Race is a traditional sport of Bangladesh.

With riverine Bangladesh's geography being dominated by the world's largest delta, the country has over 230 rivers in its terrain. The rivers have played an important role in the livelihoods of the native Bengali people.

Common in rural areas, Nouka Baich is a very old tradition of the folk Bengali culture going back centuries. Its popularity in urban areas increased in the 18th century. The various Nawab families throughout Mughal Bengal were also known for organising races and the use of Sari gan started to become more popular.

Nouka Baich was also common during the British rule in the Sylhet region after the rainy season when much of the land goes under water. The long canoes were referred to as khel naos (meaning playing boats) and the use of cymbals to accompany the singing was common.

Karnaphuli or Khawthlangtuipui is the largest and most important river in Chattogram and the Chattogram Hill Tracts. It is a 667-metre (2,188 ft) wide river in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. Originating from the Saithah village of Mamit district in Mizoram, India, it flows 270 kilometres (170 mi) southwest through Chattogram Hill Tracts and Chattogram into the Bay of Bengal. Before the Padma, it was the fastest flowing river in Bangladesh. It is said to "represent the drainage system of the whole south-western part of Mizoram.Principal tributaries include the Kawrpui River or Thega River, Tuichawng River and Phairuang River. A large hydroelectric power plant using Karnaphuli river was built in the Kaptai region during the 1960s. The mouth of the river hosts the Port of Chattogram, the largest and busiest seaport of Bangladesh.

Speaking at a press conference earlier this morning, Public Order Minister John Banns announced the government's decision to reinforce the suverveillance zones that had been set up by the Territorial Militias in Tower Hamlets, Toxteth, Guildford, Highbury, the Wirral and Brighton and St Pauls, Bristol.

"The measures have been taken in order to preserve public order and to guarantee the health and welfare of England." said Kenneth Phillips, the head of the Office for Political Orthodoxy .

Units from the Second Infantry Divison and elements of the Army Air Corp will be taking part in the operation which is expected to see the deployment of 4,300 troops across the country.

As a result of the new security measures announced today a curfew has been announced for all affected areas that will come into force from 7pm tonight. Anyone found breaking the curfew is subject to military justice and may be detained for a period of no less than 60 days.

While denying that the army had been issued shot to kill orders minister Banns reiterated that the army and militias were permitted the use of lethal force in order to ensure public safety. He added that while he hoped that no such action would be necessary the government had made it clear that no one would be allowed to threaten the integrity of the English nation.

High chancellor Adam Sutler said that he had the highest confidence in the ability of the English people to deal with this latest crisis in a calm and reasonable manner.

"Throughout the history of this country we have been tried and not found wanting. I expect the people of this great nation once again to raise to the challenge that fate has thrown into our midst and show the world that we are not for turning." He added in his address to the nation this evening.

The area of this beel starts from Mariam Nagar of Rangunia upazila and lasts up to Nishchintopur of Rangamati. Another area of the beel is situated in Kaptai of Rangamati. The amount of rice that can be produced from this vast region, it can provide two-and-a-half-day rice for all the people of the country. When it’s autumn, the fields look golden. This beel produces Amon and Boro mainly. But recently, the adjacent land to the main road of this beel has been filling up with various types of constructions.

My home from home during the week, the BBC's HQ in central London.

I've taken pics of this view before, but this is a slightly more definitive night shot, taken with the 6D and wide angle tilt shift lens. It's always tricky trying to get shots without people in, as, due to the nature of broadcasting, staff are constantly coming and going depending on what shift they happen to be working.

This was captured on a Sunday evening around 6.30pm after I'd been taking sunset shots from Waterloo Bridge.

A rare instance where, upon being queried by one of the security guards about my big camera and tripod, I could happily show him my BBC staff pass and be left to carry on untrammelled by the usual restrictions ...

Tribute to Lord Lichfield. Professional Photographer to the rich, famous and beautiful.

The above photograph isn't mine, I found it on Blue Sky Seminars website.

"I don't think old photographers retire .... they just go out of focus" - Lord Lichfield

Photographer Lord Lichfield dies

Friday, 11 November 2005

Royal photographer Lord Lichfield has died at the age of 66 after suffering a major stroke.

The Queen was among the first to pay tribute to Lord Lichfield, saying she was "deeply saddened" at the news.

Lord Lichfield was the Queen's first cousin once removed and was the official photographer at the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Diana.

He was being treated in the stroke unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford after falling ill.

The renowned photographer had been staying in the area with friends when he suffered a stroke. He died at 0400 GMT on Friday.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "It's a private matter. The Queen is deeply saddened and will be sending private condolences."

Lord Lichfield - who inherited the earldom of Lichfield in Staffordshire from his grandfather - has often been asked by the royals to take their official portraits.

He photographed the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh for her Golden Jubilee in 2002.

In July 1981, he took the official wedding photographs for the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer.

"He wasn't complicated, he wasn't pretentious, he wasn't an intellectual, he just loved making beautiful images" - Geordie Greig, Tatler editor.

Tatler editor Geordie Greig said Lord Lichfield was an "old-fashioned gentleman" whose best work had been his shots of the wedding.

"The royal wedding was spectacularly memorable, he got the intimacy of the Royal Family, he got that fairytale magic.

"There was a sort of almost Hollywood magic dust spread throughout that shoot and the world enjoyed it.

"He wasn't complicated, he wasn't pretentious, he wasn't an intellectual, he just loved making beautiful images."

Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter said Lord Lichfield had been very close to the Royal Family and was noted for the easy way he handled them during shoots, using a whistle to marshal guests at the wedding of Charles and Diana.

"One year, we were shooting a Christmas card at Windsor Castle it was all over in about 15 minutes, he was almost a one-shot man, he would get it perfect the first time."

Baroness Thatcher, whose recent 80th birthday photos were taken by Lord Lichfield, said: "Patrick Lichfield was not only one of the most talented and professional of photographers, he was also an absolute delight to sit for.

"Always courteous and considerate, he had a rare skill which is now sadly gone."

Friend and photographer Terry O'Neill said Lord Lichfield's style was always spontaneous.

"He did go for the moment. He was instinctive. It was part of his nature."

He remembered that the aristocrat liked to be viewed as "one of the chaps".

In a career spanning 40 years, Lord Lichfield worked for Vogue and photographed many stars, including Sixties singer Marsha Hunt, Michael Caine and Joanna Lumley.

As well as editorial photography, he worked on advertising commissions across several industries, including fashion, tobacco and pharmaceuticals.

He was recently commissioned by the British Tourist Authority, and was involved in Hot Shots, a television series for Discovery Real Time in which amateur photographers are taught by professionals.

Interviewed in October by the BBC News website, he told reporter Caroline Briggs: "Remember that the person you are photographing is 50% of the portrait and you are the other 50%.

"You need the model as much as he or she needs you. If they don't want to help you, it will be a very dull picture."

Lord Lichfield's long-term partner was Lady Annunziata Asquith, and he had had three children with ex-wife Lady Leonora Grosvenor - a son, Tom, and two daughters, Rose and Eloise.

Lord Lichfield : BBC News Website Obituary

Friday, 11 November 2005

Lord Lichfield stretched beyond his privileged upbringing to become a world-renowned photographer.

He first used a camera at the age of seven, taking pictures of his family, pets and scenes at his beloved home, the stately Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire.

He attended Harrow School, and took his first pictures of the Queen as he played cricket against Eton.

While his upbringing was aristocratic, Lichfield's great passion for photography carried him far beyond any blue-blooded barriers, and through an extremely successful 40-year career.

The son of Viscount Anson and Princess Anne of Denmark, Patrick Lichfield - the 5th Earl of Lichfield - was the Queen's first cousin once removed.

He made his break into photography in 1962, after leaving the Grenadier Guards.

Starting out as a photographer's assistant on £3 a week, he made the most of his showbusiness and aristocratic connections, snapping everybody from Mick and Bianca Jagger on their wedding day to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in exile.

Lichfield's memory of the latter encounter was of deliberately falling off his chair to force smiles out of his straight-faced subjects. The result got him a contract with Vogue magazine.

He also worked for a range of other newspapers and magazines, including Life.

One of his most iconic images, which he recently recreated, was the naked pose of the singer Marsha Hunt, complete with a huge afro hairdo for the musical Hair.

Another was Swinging London, which featured Roman Polanski, David Hockney and Lady Antonia Fraser. Other famous subjects included Michael Caine, Joanna Lumley and a host of 1960s glitterati.

His long career was celebrated two years ago with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, and he was awarded fellowships of both the British Institute of Professional Photographers and the Royal Photographic Society.

Most recently, he took a special set of pictures of Baroness Thatcher to mark her 80th birthday.

His position and profession came together most famously in July 1981, when he took the official wedding photographs of the Prince and Princess of Wales, before sitting down to the wedding feast with hundreds of other royals.

From his studio in north Kensington, Lichfield became renowned the world over for his skill with the lens, and personally admired for his straightforward manner.

Although he was one the official photographers of the Queen's Golden Jubilee, he liked being addressed as plain Patrick Lichfield and was at his happiest poring over shots in his studio.

A self-professed "spiv" and admirer of feminine beauty, one of Lichfield's favourite commissions was the famous Unipart calendar, shot in glamorous locations all over the world with an emphasis on stunning models.

Lichfield admitted to having relationships with many of his pretty subjects but, away from the camera, he found companionship in his own well-bred circle.

He was married for 11 years to Lady Leonora Grosvenor, sister of the Duke of Westminster, with whom he had three children.

His most recent partner was the biographer, Lady Annunziata Asquith.

Like the late Princess Margaret, he often took refuge on the Caribbean island of Mustique. It was at his holiday home there in 1992 that he suffered a very bad fall, from which he had difficulty recovering.

Despite this, he continued to work throughout his life, becoming a champion of the digital revolution, and attending to the photography that he described as his "calling".

As he got older, Lord Lichfield reflected on his legacy, wondering what he would leave behind.

Acknowledging his pedigree, he was delighted that Shugborough was smaller but better managed. But he always added: "There are the pictures."

"For group portraits I keep a whistle in my pocket and quickly blow it and get there surprised looks then quickly followed by their laughter."

"A good photographer will know the most flattering angles but generally it is not standing square on to the lens. Most people look best three quarters facing the camera, with their shoulder towards it and the head turned."

"Weddings.. Most people don't realise what a complicated and precise science wedding photography can be. In 40 years of taking photgraphs, it's the nearest thing I know to news photography.. it's the only thing you cannot do again."

"Weddings.. Shoot some photos in black and white: it helps capture the atmosphere of the Big Day"

"Weddings.. Appoint a project manager - the bride's mother is ideal. Don't expect the bride or groom to attend to the details on their day."

"Weddings.. Visit the venue, do a "recce", plan every last detail in advance. walk through with the photographer the events and timing or the day ( a similar rehearsal to that of the bride and groom) so he/she has a precise knowledge of the layout, expected details and location of the wedding event. Then, add time and a half to account for unforeseen circumstances on the actual day."

"Weddings.. Make sure you know who the important family members are - otherwise you will find strangers creeping into your valuable photographs"

"Weddings.. Photograph the bride before she gets into the car to take her to the ceremony - if wearing a veil this is the only time you will find her with it in place over her face. Make sure when she gets out of the car you have the children in place."

"Weddings.. Always start your post -ceremony photographs with the biggest group and then start to discard individuals, this means you will not be searching for people at the last minute. Expect to work right through to the last photograph of just the bride and groom. "

"Weddings.. Get the children in the first photograph - otherwise they will get their clothes messy, tired and emotional or even lost!"

"Weddings.. Be ready for the speeches and cake"

"Weddings.. the photographer must not be distracted by the prettiest bridesmaid!"

"Weddings.. Be aware of the time the bride and groom are likely to depart - shots of confetti and the car are important"

The terrible destruction made by the earthquake in Nepal is horrifying and I only hope that help can get there as quickly as possible despite all the difficulties. My sympathy goes out to the population of Nepal may they be saved!!!

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo❤️

In Bangladesh, a large proportion of marine and freshwater fish landings are processed by drying. Dry fish is locally called ‘Shutki’. In winter, many fishermen catch fish mainly to make dry fish. But traditional drying methods are used in the absence of a modern dry fish preservation facility. Most of time they dry fish under sun; these dried fish can bring them profit by exporting them. The fish is also exported to different countries after meeting local demand, traders say. Demand for fish drying labor corresponds with the lunar cycle, with two high and two low weeks each month. A flexible labor force is thus required, and most workers are hired on a daily basis. These casual laborers, who often lack alternative employment options, are usually able to find work for around 15 days per month, but sometimes as few as 10. The working day runs from dawn to dusk (roughly 6.00 am to 6.00 pm), and there is a strong gender division of labor. Men perform tasks which include washing fresh fish, applying pesticides to prevent fly infestation, hanging fish up to dry on scaffolding, weighing and bagging dried product and loading it onto trucks. Women are responsible primarily for sorting fresh fish by species, tying pairs of churri and loitya together so that they can be hung up, and turning and further sorting of mixed fish species during the drying process. At least 50% of the causal laborers employed are women & child. Workers said they get daily wage of Tk 300 in addition to some raw fish.

This was opportunistically snapped on my walk up Regent Street on the way to work one morning last week. I will hopefully get a people-free version of this composition at some point when I'm able to be in the same spot early on a weekend morning ...

A friend suggested I send my last image, Fish for the Moon Bognor Pier to the BBC which I duly did. They have just chosen it as their picture of the day for today Monday 25th July. It appears as picture of the day on the BBC England Big Picture webpage. See www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36882855

It also appears for today only (Monday) as a thumbnail with a link on the main page for the BBC News, England Website, see www.bbc.co.uk/news/england

It truly is a magnificent sculpture which, if you get the chance, to see it for yourself. The vision and workmanship is outstanding. It's incredible from any angle. The up-lighting is delightful, although I only got to see a few moments.

Rachel Webb, whose son Tom was 22 years old when he was stabbed and killed in St Peter's Street, Derby, by a 16 year old boy in January 2016, has been instrumental in bringing the Angel to Derby. She supported a knife surrender held across Derbyshire and knives from this were donated towards the creation of this sculpture.

The knife Angel has been created as a National monument against violence and aggression at the British Ironworks Centre in Oswestry and is a memorial to those whose lives have been affected by knife crime. It is a 27ft high sculpture, which Alfie Bradley has designed and created single-handedly using over 100,000 knives surrendered and collected in nationwide amnesties in 2015/2016. The angel began it's tour around the UK in 2018 when it was housed outside of Liverpool Cathedral for December and January in order to raise awareness of the impact of knife crime on society, the victims and their families and friends.

It is currently on a city tour of the UK.

Knife crime is rising across the country. The Knife Angel's presence in derby is very much a symbol of the hard work of partners and communities across Derbyshire to halt this rise.

Derbyshire Police are spearheading a multi agency campaign called Project Zao, which aims to prevent causalities and stop venerable youngsters from seeing violence as the answer. It targets those who carry knives and delivers a hard hitting educational package to thousands of young people across the county.

All 43 national police forces, the Home Office, anti-violence groups across the UK and hundreds of families who have been affected by knife crime are all strongly supporting the Knife Angel. Relatives of those killed by knife crime were invited to engrave the blades with names and messages for their loved ones as part of the sculpture.

The Knife Angel is a symbol of defiance and change, shining a spotlight on Britain's knife crime problem and its impact on communities, families and individuals.

The Angel; is helping to raise awareness of violent crime and helping young people understand the reasons not to carry knives.

Please show your support and join us in standing up to knife crime!
