Frauenkirche Dresden.... Built in the 18th century, the church was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden during World War II. The remaining ruins were left for 50 years as a war memorial, following decisions of local East German leaders. The church was rebuilt after the reunification of Germany, starting in 1994. The reconstruction of its exterior was completed in 2004, and the interior in 2005. The church was reconsecrated on 30 October 2005 with festive services lasting through the Protestant observance of Reformation Day on 31 October. The surrounding Neumarkt square with its many valuable baroque buildings was also reconstructed in 2004.

I just love the folds moving in the non-existent wind of this angel.

The angel is one of several decorating Ponte Sant'Angelo - the bridge was originally called Pons Aelius (Aelian Bridge) and built in 134 A.D. by emperor Hadrian to connect the city and his mausoleum, supposedly by the architect Demetrian. It was later also referred to as pons Sancti Petri (the bridge of St Peter) because pilgrims used it to get to the St Peter's basilica. And in the early 7th century it was given the official name of Sant'Angelo, to match the name-change of the mausoleum to Castel Sant'Angelo.

In the 15th century the bridge was used to display the bodies of executed criminals.

The angels now adorning the bridge were commissioned in 1669 by pope Clement IX and made by students of Bernini under his directions. This particular one, holding a column, was made by Antonio Raggi

Interior of the church Santa Maria Maddalena - a Baroque church, for the order Ministri degli Infirmi which had a church on this spot since 1586. The work on the current church was begun in the 17th century in the Baroque style (and the main main facade was actually finished in the 1730s in the Rococo style (after some 70 years of work on the church). Several architects were involved in this long process, and the dome is thought to be the work of Carlo Fontana.

Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England. Built 1705-1722 originally for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, as reward for military activities including the Battle of Blenheim. Birthplace in 1874 of Winston Churchill.

Christopher Wren was in the running to be architect but the post was given to John Vanbrugh who was assisted by Hawksmoor. The building is in the ‘English Baroque’ style that paralleled the perhaps more exuberant Continental Baroque. English baroque was soon unfashionable and replaced by the restraint of the Georgian buildings of Edinburgh and Bath.

56053 ‘Sir Morgannwg Ganol/ County of Mid Glamorgan’ heads past the 1898-built Barry Docks Offices with an empty coal train from Barry to Tower colliery.

Even though most Welsh coal mines had closed by 1994, residual coal traffic, particularly serving the power station at Aberthaw generated plenty of rail traffic. On this day (unusually busy) Sunday, Aberthaw received 7 trains: 2 from Tower, 4 from Cwmbargoed and 1 from Jersey Marine.

The impressive building, in the baroque revival style, was built to regulate the vast coal traffic that flowed out of Barry in the early 20th century. Prior to the first world war Barry was the busiest coal port in the world. Over 11 million tonnes of coal per year were being shipped through Barry with more than 18,000 employees working the docks.

The building was in good repair in 1994: 10 years earlier a fire had seriously damaged the structure, and the port owner had recently completed an extensive refurbishment. In 2021, the building houses part of the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

St. Andrew's Church, located on Andriivsky Uzvoz in Kyiv, was built according to the project of the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli in the Baroque style. It is a monument of architecture and monumental painting of the 18th century. of world importance, is part of the National Reserve "Sofia Kyivska". The church is included in the preliminary list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The watermill Lippholthausen (Schloßmühle Lippholthausen) in the Lippholthausen district of Lünen is a grain mill built in 1760 near the Lippe river. The watermill of the former Buddenburg noble house is a late Baroque half-timbered building, not far from the former Buddenburg Castle.

From the 14th century until 1902, the Buddenburg house was owned by the Frydag family of Buddenburg. The Frydags belong to the very old Westphalian nobles. The family is mentioned for the first time in 1198.

Around 1535, the noble family built a watermill south of Brunnenstraße and opposite Schlossallee. At the former river Henebecke a large millpond was excavated.

Afterwards, the runs of the creek Henebecke, Sadbecke, Wilbecke and Seltenbecke were diverted so that they flowed directly into the new millpond and fed it with water.

After the mill had been completed and put into operation, the farmers in the area of the thirlage "Buddenburg Mahlzwang" had to come to the castle mill to have their grain ground.

Nothing remains of the mill built at the beginning of the 16th century. However, the current mill building already has a considerable number of years on the hump: It was built in 1760 by Wessel Giesbert von Frydag.

In 1903, Haus Buddenburg and the mill were inherited by the Rüxleben family. The latter finally sold the property to the city of Lünen in 1913. Until 1930 grain was ground in the castle mill.

The old mill pond above the castle mill is no longer present, it was filled in 1938 during the construction of the Lippewerk. A loss for trippers, they could sail around on the pond with paddle boats.

Until the end of the 1970s, the House of Buddenburg, which also included the castle mill, stood in the district of Lippholthausen, now part of Lünen.

The Mühlenfreunde Lippholthausen e. V. restored and maintains the mill, which currently serves as an excursion restaurant and can also be used for weddings. It was placed under monument protection in 1985.

The convent and church of Santa Clara, founded in 1596, located in the historic centre of Quito, stands out for its Baroque style. The church has no tower and the square cloister consists of arches resting on octagonal pillars.

This organ case in the Peterskirche (English: St. Peter's Church) in Vienna is by Gottfried Sonnholz and dates from 1751. It consists of 119 blind pipes, the actual present organ behind it was built in 1903 by Franz Josef Swoboda.

While I was taking these photos, an organist played Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. That just sounded wonderful! When he finished playing, the people sitting in the pews, about a dozen in number, applauded and I realised that I had walked around with my camera in the middle of a poorly attended organ concert. Of course, I applauded too.

The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom. Following Jayavarman's death, it was modified and augmented by later Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings in accordance with their own religious preferences.

The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple has two sets of bas-reliefs, which present a combination of mythological, historical, and mundane scenes. The main conservatory body, the Japanese Government Team for the Safeguarding of Angkor (the JSA) has described the temple as "the most striking expression of the baroque style" of Khmer architecture, as contrasted with the classical style of Angkor Wat. The Esterházy Palace at Fertőd is the greatest Baroque-Rococo monument complex in Hungary. On the site of the Palace, Duke Joseph Esterházy initiated the construction of a hunting lodge with twenty-two rooms in 1720, based on the plans of the Viennese architect, Erhard Martinelli. However, the golden age of the Palace began when Nicholas Esterházy (also known as Miklós ‘the Magnificent’) succeeded to the ducal title.

Utilising the grandeur of 18th century Baroque-Rococo architecture, Duke Nicholas enlarged the palace, and with the help of Nicolaus Jakoby; he created a large garden with several alleys. At the French Garden with an Opera House and a Marionette theatre and employed German theatre companies as well as Italian and French ballet dancers. The orchestra of the Palace led by Joseph Haydn the great musician and composer, the chamber composer and conductor at Eszterháza, was well-known all over Europe.

The second golden period of Eszterháza came about at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The suites of the Palace and the French Garden were restored for Duke Nicholas Esterházy IV. and his wife, Countess Margaret Cziráky. Enchanted by Eszterháza the Countess spent her dowry on the restoration of the palace and the gardens. The modernisation of the park started in 1902. Among the designers of the gardens was Anton Umlauft, one of the best-known gardeners in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
