A tribute to one great mini series as a prequel to Spartacus « blood and sand ».
The appeal to the public of the games was as bloody entertainment and the fascination which came from contests which were literally a matter of life and death. Hugely popular events were held in massive arenas throughout the Roman Empire and some of them were raised to superstar status.

One of the reasons I love renaissance fairs; great photo ops. Where else are you going to see this besides the movies, and occasionally, walking around in Walmart.
View from Porolissum Roman Castrum, a military defensive position the north-eastern end of the Roman Empire, Salaj County, Romania
At the edge of the Roman Empire, Romans would likely have seen a landscape of unfamiliar, often "barbarian" tribes and cultures, with a mix of wilderness and settlements that were less developed compared to the Romanized regions within the empire's borders, often viewed as a potential threat requiring military vigilance to maintain the empire's boundaries. yeah, I kinda suck at this self-snapshot thing, but I usually just "take a deep breath, babe" and go with it. I was tres unhappy with my result for the barbarian piece and as the piece was important to me (the happening, not the photograph) I tried to shoot it again. This is pretty much what I was after... greed and over-indulgence, worship of money (fake fake). It isn't perfect, but pretty much nothing I do is. I can't let it stop me. lol. don't let it stop you! get up off the couch and start doing not wishing (my motto).
anyway reprinted just because:
Once upon a time in South Central LA there was a beautiful communal garden among the rank concrete. With 360 plots it fed 350 families nutritious foods. The people would grow foods not found in the markets. The people would grow medicinal plants because they didn't have access to health care. They grew for themselves and sold to the community. If you needed medicine, you were often given it for free because it was essential to your well being.
The gardens grew more than food, they grew community, pride and acted as a shelter from violence and gangs.
Local government saw fit to plough it under in order to make way for a warehouse. No matter that South Central houses many warehouses. No matter the people protested. No matter it provided so much to marginalized peoples. No matter that the government wouldn't dare to take away green spaces used by wealthy whites.
I wish the people in charge had to go live some-where awful until they learned THEY ARE NOT ENTITLED. Being white and rich does not make you a better person. You are not deserving.

During the Viking age between the years of 793-1066 AD, a group of mostly Swedish Vikings settled in what is now Belarus, Ukraine and Russia where they would form the state of Kievan Rus. They would settle along the Volga and Dniper rivers and would intermingle with the local Slavic peoples. It wouldn't be long until they would interact with the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantine Empire. The Rus were attracted by the vast riches of the Eastern Roman capital of Constantinople and tried to raid it multiple times but these efforts were futile. However the Eastern Roman Emperors saw a new opportunity in these "axe wielding barbarians" as they called them.
The Eastern Roman Empire was plagued with a lot of internal issues and the royal court was full of political intrigue. No one could be trusted during this tumultuous time. The solution to this problem was to hire foreign soldiers to be the emperors royal body guard. This was a common practice in many ancient and medieval empires. Some sources say the Rus were hired as early as 874 AD, shortly after the founding of the Kievan Rus by Rurik. The Varangian Guard as we know it wouldn't be founded until 988 AD by emperor Basil II following the Christianization of the Kievan Rus by Vladimir of Kiev. Varangian was the name given to the Rus Vikings by the Greeks. The Varangians would become known for their ferocity and loyalty to the emperors of Eastern Rome in the many battles to come, but that's a build for another day.
It has been a very long time since I built something related to the Viking age. A combination of Kings and Generals videos and the hype surrounding Assassins Creed Valhalla inspired me to finally build something related to them. I immediately thought of the Varangian guard as they were one of the most notorious fighting units in the medieval world with a very interesting history. Maybe I'll do more builds related to them very soon. Until then, enjoy!
"What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie?
I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky.
The subtle tongue, the sophist guile, they fail when the broadswords sing;
Rush in and die, dogs - I was a man before I was a king."

Out of my way, royal scum!
Oh great, I feel like having some Barbarians right now!
Oh, do you? Why not, better than bashing our heads in.
Whut? What are talking about?
That barbar-thingy you were on about. Some glowing chorcoal embers, seasoned meat...
And Pølser!
...yes Olaf, and Pølserne. Add some sliced taters in major-naise.
Oh, you mean barbeque.
That was your idea. Did you bring some beer? Ours is evaporated.
