Seen at Stagecoach East's depot in Ely.

Rather caught me by surprise, so a rushed shot through the window of the 39 bus I was on, of this brand new Volvo B8RLE / MCV Evora, one of 5 10.8m models new for Orkney this year. Alongside these are 20 12.9m examples and 9 Optare Solo SRs to wholly replace the 34 strong fleet.

There were a number of Evoras at Volvo Ely, presumably for pre-delivery inspections, but there were another three fuelling up and then leaving from the Stagecoach depot down the road. One wonders if this was the beginning of their long trek north towards Orkney!

The new colours do look good, even unfinished, and there'll have to be a space in the calendar to visit next year when the new fleet is in service.

Having had a day to get my head around this surprise addition to South staffs fleet, I am curious to where this previously operated. There appears to be no other photos of this particular example.

It’s a 23 plate which should suggest this has been in service previously? It’s also interesting that it carries an LF registration and not the usual BV/BU/BP lettering at the beginning of its registration.

It has been a while since I last uploaded a shot of Coasthopper service CH1, so on a lovely sunny April afternoon we see Sanders MCV Evora bodied Volvo B8RLE type number 518 - BV21 OOA “Norfolk Adventurer” heading along the A149 Coast Road between Salthouse and Kelling Cross with the above Cromer bound journey. As from 2nd April 2023 the Sunday frequency on service CH1 increased from six eastbound/ five westbound journeys to eight each way on a regular hourly headway. From 1st May 2023 the Monday - Saturday frequency also increases to more or less half hourly with up to fourteen journeys each way per day.

It will be five years on 29th April 2023 since Sanders took over the Wells-next-the-Sea to Cromer section of the former Stagecoach operated King’s Lynn - Hunstanton - Wells - Cromer Coasthopper route and added the extension to/from North Walsham. Various combinations of CH prefixed service numbers have been used during this period and back in April 2018 some journeys ran right through each way over the full route between Wells and North Walsham, but in more recent times they both seem to have settled down as separate CH1 Wells - Cromer and CH2 Cromer - North Walsham services and operational variations.

On both sides of the road is the edible plant “Smyrnium olusatrum” - more commonly known as Alexanders - which was originally brought to the British Isles by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago and as we can see it grows in great abundance in these parts at this time of year. In the background, beyond the Saltmarsh and shingle bank sea defences we have an unusually vessel free North Sea.
