Azaleas are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, particularly the former sections Tsutsuji (evergreen) and Pentanthera (deciduous). Azaleas bloom in spring, their flowers often lasting several weeks. Shade tolerant, they prefer living near or under trees. They are part of the family Ericaceae.
In addition to being renowned for its beauty, the azalea is also highly toxic—it contains andromedotoxins in both its leaves and nectar, including honey from the nectar. Azaleas and rhododendrons were once so infamous for their toxicity that to receive a bouquet of their flowers in a black vase was a well-known death threat.

Hello Everyone,
Macro Mondays is a weekly theme-based challenge group. This week's challenge was "Zed."
Zed you ask? That's another way to pronounce the letter "Z" and in fact, this is how we say it in Canada. Anyway, the subject had to contain the letter "Z" in its name.
These unopened azalea blooms measure 1" across, well under the 3" maximum. Happy Macro Mondays! HMM!
Thanks for taking the time to look and for leaving me a comment. I do love hearing from you!
Have a fantastic day and week ahead!

A photograph I’ve kept for a while but not put on Flickr. It’s from the open day at Stody Lodge where there’s a mesmerising display of rhododendrons and azaleas. I’ve tried several times to add tags but they keep disappearing. I’ll keep trying.

I love Azaleas. At the top of my fave list are the Wild Flame Azaleas that grow along the mountain trails in my area. The true name for the wild Azalea, is Flame Azalea (Rhododendron calendulaceum). They can be bright orange, yellow, or red. We see the orange in my area most often. They grow on slopes, in the thickest areas, and can be very hard to get near. This one had grown upwards from the slope, nearer to the trail, and with my 300mm, I was able to get a good shot.

Meaning of Azaleas:
Throughout the world, this flower stands for love and gentleness, making it perfect to give to a loved one for any occasion. The azalea speaks of taking care of yourself and everlasting beauty, which is exemplified in this plant’s long life not only as a houseplant, but also as a cheery addition to your yard or garden.
