A steady hiss escaped from inside the machine. Like a large creature asleep, it emitted a slow rhythm of breathy pulses. Edgar could feel the heat thrown off by the boiler. He stood silently studying the interplay of the engine’s driving rods and wheels. “If life only could be so elegantly designed,” Edgar thought to himself. He noticed the engineer leaning on the frame of the cabin window, staring intently toward the back of the train. Someone waved a signal from the opposite end and the engineer disappeared inside the cabin. Without warning, a jet of steam burst from a side vent of the engine. Startled, Edgar stepped back. Then a vaporous cry broke from the train’s whistle, and Edgar thrust his fingers in his ears. The sound carried a tremulous energy at its core and caused an unpleasant sensation to resonate in his internal organs. As the enormous wheels started to turn, for a moment the rails and the ballast beneath appeared to slide backward. In the midst of this impression Edgar experienced a moment of disequilibrium–almost dizziness–then the ground seemed to anchor itself as the engine eased forward. A warning bell mounted on the engine’s front began to swing out a steady peal. With a jerk the cars went taut, and the clasps between them chimed a metallic note. White puffs jumped from the locomotive’s smokestack. As the coaches passed, their wheels bumped out a steady rhythm. The engine bell continued its lament and grew fainter as the locomotive moved into the distance. To Edgar there was something immensely poignant in the bell’s sound, not exactly a toll, but a kind of farewell.

Another excerpt from my novella, TIME'S TANGENT

…Attached to the front [of the high school,] a square tower sheltered the stairs that connected the [school's] two levels. Atop the tower, a large open belfry afforded excellent views to those few who took the trouble of climbing the access ladder. This space had been intended to house a bell transferred from an older structure, now the grade school. But the bell had been superseded by a large clock with a pendulum impelled by electric impulse. The pendulum swung reliably inside a glass case mounted on the school office wall…

…It was a pleasant Friday afternoon just touching 3:00, and electric bells throughout the school trilled to close the academic week. A few moments later, a surge of students passed through several exits and scattered along the streets. The teachers, forbidden to leave before 5:00, chose to bide their time in various ways. Some of them corrected student work in their rooms or devised lessons for the coming weeks. Others, weary of academic tasks, sought out the company of a colleague or two.

Edgar Vestal Dillard, twenty-five years of age and sole member of the high school English faculty, strode the length of the oiled corridor that divided the upper floor [of the school]…

Gregory Burnett Edwards is my nom de plume. This is the cover image of my recently published novella, TIME'S TANGENT which is set in a small Oregonian town in 1910. The image above is a photo of my antique "kitchen clock" which proclaims the hour quite noisily and suggested the passage below.

The photograph is by me. The layout and lettering are by my son Abhinav Vats and are displayed here by his permission. Thank you Abhi.

The following is the quote from the novella:

"Life for our kind is full of hazards. There’s no getting around that. Wherever we live we must be cunning as well as careful.”

The kitchen clock suddenly banged-out seven noisy strikes. They both jumped and stared in the direction of the clamor.

“Speaking of scared. What a ruckus for such a cute little fellow,” Laughed Jonas.

“Oh, my gosh!” Edgar exclaimed. “It’s seven already! We’ve got to get on over. We’ve absolutely no choice."

Another quote is offered in the preceding post.
