I can't for the life of me recall what I used to do back in the day instead of grabbing my mobile phone whenever my hands weren't occupied for two spare seconds. As if we're on autopilot, it's become second nature for us to reach into our pockets, pull out our smartphones and thumb through whichever apps happen to be readily available, just to get that quick fix. We're all culprits of this behavior.

As much as I adore and appreciate these things - because they've changed life for the better in so many ways - the widespread 'device addiction' is a scary observation. I fear that we're distracting ourselves from the natural human condition by continuing to use these all-encompassing devices as a crutch, refuge, or safety blanket whenever we feel any level of discomfort approaching.

Comedian Louis C.K.'s definitely on to something when he says, "smartphones are toxic."

I've had this conversation with a few people recently, but as anxiety levels continue to rise and more rooms fall silent, nobody seems to be doing anything about it. We're all aware of the elephant in the room, but the almighty smart device is such a fundamental part of our daily lives that it's easy to shrug off the issue.

Then one day, I discovered this! If you haven't already heard of Fone Free Feb, please do yourself a favor and check it out. A group of forward-thinking people have decided to address the issue and take action. I think we're taking the right steps in the right direction. It'll be interesting to see who jumps on-board and what eventuates. Will we return to our wayward behavior, or will we restore that much-needed balance? Only time will tell...
