Massey Air Museum has on display a Norden Bombsight as would have been used by the bombardier on a B-17 Bomber during WWII. It combines two functions, aiming and stabilization of the airplane in flight through the autopilot.

You are looking at the upper unit, the sighthead or “football” containing a gyroscope, sighting telescope and analog computer. This unit was considered Top Secret at the beginning of the war, requiring it’s removal and storage under armed guard when not installed in the airplane just prior to a mission. A unit called the “stabilizer” (which we do not have) remained in the airplane, it contains a directional gyro which is connected to the sighthead.

The complete bombsight consists of both of these mechanisms — lower unit or stabilizer, and the upper unit. The stabilizer keeps the line-of-sight direction fixed, or controlled. It is coupled to the airplane's autopilot so it could actually fly the aircraft during the bombing run, and to the bomb racks so it could release the bombs at the right time automatically when directed by the upper unit.

The telescope sight is used by the bombardier to locate the target long in advance of the drop point. The gyroscopes hold the bombsight stable. The computer solves the various mathematical problems which confront the bombardier just prior to the bombing run.

The speed and drift is calculated by adjusting the automatic movement of the sight until it held the target stationary in the cross hairs while the airplane maintained a steady heading.

The altitude and airspeed is entered into the calculator by the bombardier to determine the the speed at which the target would be seen drifting backwards in the sight due to the forward motion of the aircraft. The output of this calculator drove a rotating prism at that angular speed in order to keep the target centered in the telescope. In a properly adjusted Norden, the target remains motionless in the sights.

The Norden thus calculated two angles: the range angle based on the altitude, airspeed and ballistics; and the current angle to the target, based on the ground speed and heading of the aircraft. The difference between these two angles represented the "correction" that needed to be applied to bring the aircraft over the proper drop point. If the aircraft was properly aligned with the target on the bomb run, the difference between the range and target angles would be continually reduced, eventually to zero (within the accuracy of the mechanisms). At this moment the Norden automatically dropped the bombs

The Norden bombsight consists of two primary parts, the gyroscopic stabilization platform on the left side, and the mechanical calculator and sighting head on the right side. They were largely separate instruments, connecting through the sighting prism. The sighting eyepiece was located in the middle, between the two, in a less than convenient location that required some dexterity to use.

Before use, the Norden's stabilization platform had to be “righted" with the small spirit levels seen through a glass window on the front of the stabilizer.

Once the stabilizer was righted, the bombardier would then dial in the initial setup for altitude, speed and direction. The reflector sight or prism would then be "clutched out" of the computer, allowing it to be moved rapidly to search for the target on the ground. Once the target was located the computer was clutched in and started moving the prism to follow the target. The bombardier would begin making adjustments to the aim. As all of the controls were located on the right, and had to be operated while sighting through the telescope, another problem with the Norden is that the bombardier could only adjust either the vertical or horizontal aim at a given time, his other arm was normally busy holding himself up above the telescope.

On top of the device, to the right of the sight, were two final controls. The first was the setting for "trail", which was pre-set at the start of the mission for the type of bombs being used. The second was the "index window" which displayed the aim point in numerical form. The bombsight calculated the current aim point internally, and displayed this as a sliding pointer on the index. The current sighting point, where the prism was aimed, was also displayed against the same scale. In operation, the sight would be set far in advance of the aim point, and as the bomber approached the target the sighting point indicator would slowly slide toward the aim point. When the two met, the bombs were automatically released. The aircraft was moving over 110 metres per second (350 ft/s), so even minor interruptions in timing could dramatically affect aim.

In USAAC use, the entire bombsight was attached to a second device, the "Automatic Flight Control Equipment" (AFCE), an autopilot system. The AFCE could be used during the flight to the target area through a control panel in the cockpit, but was more commonly used under direct command of the bombardier. The AFCE sat behind and below the Norden and attached to it at a single rotating pivot. On the bomb run, the bombardier would first rotate the entire Norden so the vertical line in the sight passed through the target, and then clutched in the AFCE. From that point on, the AFCE would attempt to guide the bomber so it followed the course of the bombsight, and pointed the heading to zero out the drift rate, fed to it through a coupling. As the aircraft turned onto the correct angle, a belt and pulley system rotated the sight back to match the changing heading. The AFCE was another reason for the Norden's accuracy, as it ensured the aircraft quickly followed the correct course and kept it on that course much more accurately than the pilots could.

In good visibility only 30% of bombs fell within 1,00 feet of the aiming point.

By this point, the autopilot had long ago quit, so we were hand-steering Boomer into port. My first experience at the wheel of a boat, and it's surprising how tired the arms get. I drove her for about 2 hours, until we started spying breeching humpbacks off the port side, then Joseph took over so I could watch the whales and dance it up to Byron's 2nd favorite music (tied with Jimmy Buffet and trance) - the Pointer Sisters.

Automatic pilots like this one guided the JB-2 to its target. The heading, altitude, and length of flight were pre-set into the autopilot before launching. Gyroscopes, servo-motors, an air-log counter, a compass and an altitude control instrument assisted the autopilot during flight. The servo-motors, geared to the autopilot, adjusted the missile's control surfaces (elevators and rudder) to maintain target heading. The automatic pilot and servo-motors operated on compressed air carried in tanks aboard the missile. The JB-2 was a U.S. version of the German V-1 "Buzz Bomb."

The Army at Fort Polk is flying a new Helicopter over Vernon Parish these days. UH72A Lakota general support/VIP Support/Med-Evac helicopters belonging to “A” Company of the 5th Aviation BN which currently has nine of the choppers at the Ft Polk Airfield.

Named the Lakota, this utility helicopter is named, as are all Army Aviation assets after Indian Tribes. For example, the Chinook CH-47 Helicopter manufactured in 1962.

The three crew, duel engine helicopter can seat 10, fly up to 168 MPH, has a ceiling of 18,000’ and is an unarmed utility asset that can open its rear doors to accept hospital stretchers of wounded. One of the new features of this helicopter came in handy during the two day long hours flight to South Dakota , full Auto-Pilot capability. During a demonstration at 1,000’ the Lakota was flying on a computer entered course when a simple turn of a knob, changed the direction & destination of the helicopter while the pilot & co-pilot were flying ‘hands off.’

Two of the Lakota Helicopters flew to South Dakota recently to participate in the Rosebud Indian Reservation Powwow where the crew participated in the Lakota Sun Dance honoring warriors & elders.

Inside the rear clamshell doors of one of the visiting Lakota Helicopters are signatures of many of the Indian war veterans who turned out at the Powwow to welcome the Ft. Polk crews.

When out in the Vernon Parish you look up & see a new type of green bird flying overhead, it just might be the Army’s UH72A or as they call it the LAKOTA.

Pictured 1: front view of the UH72A Lakota Helicopter; 2: Rear clamshell doors open showing the Lakota Indian War Veteran’s signatures on one of the two visiting helicopters at the South Dakota Powwow; 3: Four of the nine Lakota Helicopters currently at Ft Polk; 4: a new feature “Auto-Pilot’ for Army Helicopters; 5: Lakota Indian War Veterans & Ft Polk Lakota Crew members in South Dakota; 6: a Ft Polk Lakota Helicopter flies by Chief Crazy Horse’s memorial under construction in South Dakota; 7: the Seal of the Lakota’s unit “A” Company 5th Aviation BN, Ft. Quick Tip For Your Insurance Marketing Strategies

Stop Paying For Competing Online Leads. Get Your Own Exclusive Leads for Free.

For some of you buying internet leads works very well, but for the majority of insurance agents, buying internet leads just don’t work. The negative result is typically caused by a number of things, which are: price, products, follow-up, system and just the burn out after a few months. Typically we spend $6 – $10 for a lead and competing with 4-5 other agents for the business. To me this is not fun! Although it can work with an autoresponder system, which we get into in other blogs, this is not the focus with this blog. I want to give you the idea of how you can get started to produce your own leads for free.

#1 Easy and Inexpensive Idea For Your Insurance Marketing Strategies

The #1 goal on what every insurance agent would love to have is free leads coming to their agency every day. Imagine getting 20 leads a day from people that are interested in your product and want a quote. And you don’t have to anything to anybody for this. It just takes a little work to get the system in place and then success. I’m sure that you are aware that people get online now days to research and buy their insurance. When these people get online and search, they typically find the same 5-6 insurance agents on the 1st page of Google every time. Well these people are clicking on those 5-6 sites all day long. Now I’ve noticed that most of those sites don’t have anything to really capture the business. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could modify your site, get it listed in the first few rankings of Google, and collect names and emails for quoting. And do all this for virtually nothing, except for some set up time at the beginning.

Make Your Insurance Marketing Strategies Simple But Effective
