This photo is part of probably the most strange and in retrospect the most agonizing behavior that we have ever seen in a predator.

It had rained that morning and the safari had been very uneventful.

Suddenly our guide heard nagging and shouting from monkeys in the bush.

Quickly the cause of the theater was identified:

this leopard had authorized a vervet monkey baby, probably the mother had "lost" it in the excitement - vervet monkeys carry their offspring under their bellies, the babys cling to their mother.

Instead of killing the baby quickly, the cat played with him.

The cat occasionally let go of the little one, only to bully him again a short time later. She bit down just so hard that the monkey was not hurt. She took it in her mouth, as if she were transporting her own offspring.

The cat apparently used the tiny one as bait in the intention that one of the adults would become careless and start a "rescue operation".

We watched this spectacle for 30 minutes. None of the monkeys got cocky and we left the "crime scene", because we had to our bushflight.

The cat had not killed the monkey until then.

Authorized by the Second United States Congress under President George Washington on April 12, 1792 and completed November 5, 1796. It underwent a massive renovation in 1860 when two new levels and a larger lantern were added. The single brown stripe was added in 1899. The ocean embankment supporting it has eroded so severely that matted large stones have been added to stop it from further being washed out.

During the construction of the Canal de Provence in the 1970s, certain structures were planned to accommodate the bridges allowing the passage of a future motorway which will join the Alps. Thus this construction in waiting remained (from memory) a good twenty years before being able to play its role. This is the case now and there is no longer possible access to this place which is reserved for authorized personnel.

The original photo was a pano-sabotaged interior but with a bit of simplification, colour change and a few other tweeks, in my mind, it grew into this water garden with paths from the garden gate to the pond where the people kneel to read or meditate.

“Are you looking for a lighthouse? Let me give you an advice: When you improve your own mind, you become your very own lighthouse!”

― Mehmet Murat ildan

Sunset and moon behind the Split Rock Lighthouse, shortly before they fired her up in 2008.

After a storm on Nov. 28, 1905 had damaged 29 ships, Congress authorized $70,000 to build a lighthouse and fog signal at Split Rock. The light station was completed in 1910.

The light was taken out of service in 1969 when modern navigation methods made it obsolete, but the beacon is lit once a year on November 10th to commemorate the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Learn More about the history of the Split Rock light.

This is just one of many happy little squirrels that play in the garden daily. From the look of things, I believe there will soon be more little ones scampering about. This one is a bit on the plump side and is eating a lot more than her normal share.

The squirrels were given the name Robbie after Robert Edward Knievel. Robert is the son of Evil Knievel the famous daredevil that performed crazy stunts. In that sense, squirrels seem to be quite the little daredevils and they perform great stunts to achieve their goal for obtaining unauthorized snacks. That's fun to watch but can be a bit annoying if they actually achieve their goal. When that occurs, I have to figure out yet another way to stop them, at least temporarily.

In this image Robbie is on an authorized feeding station and has nearly finished all of the treats that were put out. Technically, the treats were meant to be shared by all of the squirrels and last all day. But this little Robbie ate nearly all of the treats during the breakfast sitting. You can see what remained if you look at yesterday's post with the Summer Tanager.

Of course, after she left the feeding station, I placed more treats for the others to partake in. Wouldn't you know it, she came right back and chased the others away, LOL!

Please don't be a Robbie when it comes to sharing. I do hope your day is absolutely wonderful. Happy snapping.

By prerogative right, the Queen owns all unmarked mute swans on the River Thames. Two livery companies of the City of London, the Vintners' Company and the Dyers' Company, have been given the rights to the ownership of some swans in the Thames.

Each year there is a 'census' of the swans called Swan Upping when those cygnets born to swans owned by the livery companies are ringed accordingly leaving the Queen's swans unmarked.

The Swan Upping ceremony takes place over 5 days in July on part of the River Thames when the swans are taken out of the water given a health check and ringed if they are young birds. The original reason for this ancient tradition was because swans were eaten as delicacy so establishing ownership was important. Swans are no longer eaten and the emphasis is now on conservation and education.
