I'd seen hints of Mount Rushmore from different points along U.S. Route 16A in the Black Hills National Forest on the winding curves of that highway a few times but never had a chance at that point to really pulloff. Here though, it was all lined up to use the Scovel Johnson Tunnel as a portal to view it off in the distance. Composing the image was simple enough in lining myself up. Metering was a lot more trickier, given the large dynamic range. Nearby and through the tunnel were much more in shadows and even partially covered by the nearby forest of trees. Mount Rushmore though was caught in a bright light from the late morning sun. I chose to meter off the former and then adjusted the shutter speed to best capture light across the entire image. I later brought the RAW/NEF image into Aurora HDR Pro and used that to better work with the dynamic range capture to produce a HDR image from single RAW one.

What an amazing view to take in! This was right around sunset on my first evening back in Big Bend National Park. While the sun was further to the south then a view of it setting between the peaks of The Window, it was still a view to take in! This was taken on the porch area of the main lodge area where many gather in the late afternoons and evenings.

For the image, I decided to meter the exposure for that area with the highlights in the far portion as I didn't want to lose any of the details and contrast present with the clouds and far-off peaks in the distance. I figured I could later work to bring out the nearby shadowed areas later in post-production. One of the things I've recently learned was using Aurora HDR and using a RAW image from my Nikon SLR to create an HDR from a single image. That's how I processed this image and exported a tiff image to then work with in Capture NX2 for the final image.

An image captured while walking the Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta last December. It was another image where I knew I wouldn’t blow any highlights worth recovering, given the overcast skies, but still decided to meter for the more brighter areas through the trees. I later worked with the NEF/RAW image in Aurora HDR 2019 pull out the shadows for a more complete color range in this forested setting. Those colors really came out in the lower portion of the image and a few areas where leaves still remained on the trees above.

Australian King Parrot

On a recent walk I came across this beautiful Australian King Parrot, bribed with a few seeds he was happy to pose for me so I took a quick portrait.

I post processed in Lightroom and Aurora HDR, I then used my standard Topaz DeNoise AI and Topaz Sharpen AI. Image was captured with a Sony A7R 4 and Tamron 70-300mm(@300mm), 1/320, f/6.3, ISO 640

The original set of TIFF images I captured I brought into Aurora HDR Pro and used a template I'd created for a natural, realistic type look. I then brought the HDR image into Capture NX2 where I used a technique I'd read from Jason Odell in his book on Capture NX2. He described it as an Ansel Adams look using and LCH editor and then adding Black points and White points before converting to black & white.

I captured this at the Diablo Lake Overlook in Ross Lake National Recreation Area and North Cascades National Park Service Complex.
