Echidna

Image of an Echidna captured (rummaging in the yard of my parents place) using a Nikon D610 and Tamron 150-600mm. This Image was a three shot HDR (base image was 600mm, 1/250 sec, f/6.3, ISO 2500 and shot handheld). The HDR image was created in Aurora HDR before being finished off in Luminar AI (primarily using Accent AI, and Structure AI). I used Topaz Denoise AI to reduce the overall noise (as the ISO was bumped because I was shooting handheld) and Topaz Sharpen AI just to generally apply a sharpen to the image. Finally I finished off using Affinity Photo mainly to remove some distracting elements from the image using the cloning tool and the inpainting tool.

For those that are interested apparently the echidnas are named after Echidna who was a creature in Greek mythology who was half woman and half snake and was perceived to have qualities of both reptiles and mammals. They are from the Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Mammalia, Order: Monotremata, Suborder: Tachyglossa and Family: Tachyglossidae. Genetic data (from the Molecular Clock) suggests that echidna's split from the platypuses between 19 and 48 million years ago.

A setting and overlook I had to soak in after seeing an image from another photographer before heading out on a recent trip to the Dakotas. Given what I felt was a high dynamic range with the morning sunlight and the shadowed area across the badlands, I attempted to meter as best I could but still felt like I didn't quite capture what my eyes saw. I later decided to try something I'd only recently updated with Aurora HDR Pro. I made some initial adjustments and then exported a TIFF image for some final work in Capture NX2 with a few CEP filters (Low Key, Polarization and Graduated Neutral Density) for the final image.

While walking in the namesake canyon with a view looking to the west and upstream along the border with the US and Mexico. My thinking in composing this image was to use the Rio Grande flowing by and trail as a leading line with the canyon walls to frame this setting. Given the perceived large dynamic range of the image, I had to meter it properly to avoid blowing highlights in the portions of the canyon walls caught in sunlight versus those and in shadows. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

With the low clouds on this overcast day, and the off and on rains, it seemed to be a chance to use HDR to create an image that might capture the full dynamic range of hues and tones at this setting in Ross Lake National Recreation Area and North Cascades National Park Service Complex. I used five TIFF images, bringing them into Aurora HDR Pro and then using a template I created that brought out a realistic and balanced type look. I could then work with control control points and CEP filters in Capture NX2 for the final image.

A view looking to the southeast while staying at the Chisos Mountains Lodge in Big Bend National Park. What drew me into this image (and what I wanted to capture while composing the image) was the setting of the lodge itself and the walkway leading up to it. Kind of a reminder for where I stayed on a past trip. But it was the moon rising just over the Chisos Mountains. There was that one break in the clouds above Toll Mountain where the moon just happened to be. So that's the story behind the image. To meter this setting was a lot more difficult given the brightness of the moon with the more shadowed areas in the nearby lodge. I felt I was able to find an exposure that allowed me to capture enough of the dynamic range according to the histogram on my Nikon D850 SLR camera.

I later chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I then exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.
