This "vulcano simulation" has been set up in an augmented reality sandbox. The sand cone has been observed by an Asus Xtion Pro depth-camera from above. After calculating a topographic color palette from the depth readings, the generated surface texture has been projected by a beamer that was also mounted downward facing above the sandbox.

For the vulcanic outburst, orange color powder has been placed at the end of a little tube that was integrated into the vent of the vulcano. By puffing into the free end of the tube, a nice eruption could be faked.

I dropped by the “Trail Blazer” mural being worked on by artist Wendy Popko. She was hard at work, until I asked whatcha doin', but she stopped to chat about the mural, that was commissioned by the city of Sterling Heights. It will be a very unique mural using AR - Augmented Reality, that will allow you to use an app on your cellphone to watch the mural come alive with movement. Google has just released its AR stickers to all the Pixel and Pixel2 phones that run on Android 8.1. I had so much fun today I couldn't put down my phone. I placed these AT-AT walkers and Tie Fighters on my phone screen. They were all animated. So you could literally shoot some video with these animated figures in the background. Amazing tech. Perhaps our photography is under attack, huh?!!

This is an Augmented Reality (AR) Sky Projection on my iPhone 7 Plus camera's field of view.

It's a cloudy night. Only Venus was visible to my unaided eyes.

The star D OPH in Ophiuchus is circled in AR and is identified at the bottom.

This is an augmented reality projection of what this app knows about the sky in the southwest direction I am pointing the camera. I adjusted my orientation to capture both Venus and Jupiter which was about to move below my western building.

Note: I have not done any image post-processing at this point in time. I think I can sharpen the swimming pool and increase the contrast.

Augmented Reality is finally enabling me to do things I have wanted to do for most of my 84 years on this, our beautiful planet, Earth. And, I’m able to hold it in my hand❣️ it really is amazing and wonderful. ....... The computer in my iPhone 7 Plus is already outmoded and superseded by newer models. Still, it is many times faster and more powerful than the first IBM computer I managed and operated during the night shift At MIT’s Nuclear Physics computing facility. That was in 1964. If you want to see the computer and associated large tape drive units, try to find the movie “Hidden Figures.” We had one of the first ones as did NASA working on getting our first man in orbit. Do you remember Hollerith cards?
