Rain, standing water, sunsets, colours...you know me. Sucker for this kinda shizzle.
Hope you're all fit and well.
I've been wanting to photograph this amazing mural in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina for a while. I finally made that happen on New Years Day. Created by local artist Taylor White.
More than just a mural, "8-BIT TO 5G" is a celebration of creativity and innovation. Video games have grown up right alongside us here in Raleigh, and this evocative mural is a colorful expression of the relationship between our city and this unique art form.
Thanks to the magic of augmented reality (AR) "8-BIT TO 5G" is an evolving experience. During the year, unique AR elements of the mural come alive through your phone’s camera, showcasing different iconic images within the artwork and bringing an extra dimension to this already-rich art installation.
I shot six photos to create this pano. A bit of bending on the edges, but overall, I'm pleased with the result.

Noodle Feed goes beyond physical senses and creates a shared augmented reality environment where people can interact in new ways and consider that the world is much more than we perceive. The colourful forms and tangible nature of the ‘noodles’ are designed to attract attention, while the rough matte texture of recycled sailcloth contrasts with the soft, springy cushioning of the objects, inviting visitors to move them into chairs, beds and shelters.
An Augmented Reality App lets visitors leave digital traces of their time at the installation, including photos, stories and drawings that can be seen by other users in physical space.

Excerpt from marlapasquin.ca:
The client, Nick Sweetman, is a multidisciplinary artist who has worked with muralists and First Nations historian Phil Cote to design a mural to imbue the indigenous oral traditions of storytelling and traditional spiritual perspectives. The 500 ft nature-themed mural celebrates the plants and animals whose natural habitat is the Toronto shoreline. The idea is to create an application that integrates augmented reality to overlay information on the existing environment.
The main idea of this project is to find an effective way to interpret Cote's cultural experience and knowledge of signs of Indigenous symbols, language and interpretation to those who see it. This will help users digitally experience the stories of the artwork.

Fokus auf Mainz!
Was Mainz anbelangt, schauen die Kasteler wohl nun endgültig in die Röhre! :-)

Focus on the city of Mainz!
The banks of the river Rhine near Mainz-Kastel in Hesse, Germany, with the newly installed work of art presented to the public at the end of May, a walk-in, fully mirrored, multi-faceted tube made of stainless steel, created by the artist team Wolfgang Winter/ Berthold Hoerbelt. Title of the sculpture: "Dedicated to the water".

Using augmented reality lenses to inspect our treadmill, yes clicking in mid-air won’t make it work better, I realise that. Although astronauts have to be proficient at many things and have training, we have (lots of) limits to our knowledge and skills 😁. We rely on mission control for everything, to help us and guide us and lend a helping hand. But if you have ever tried to help somebody fix their computer, or instruct them to do a difficult task over the phone, you will know how difficult it is! No not that thingy, the other thingy! 😜 Space agencies are constantly trying to improve the process and augmented reality is another test, allowing us both hands to work with as well as avoiding the necessity to stop what we are doing to move to the next step on a checklist on our tablets. Win-win possibly?

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, an augmented reality dark ride opened in Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023. Guests ride four-seat tracked “karts,” attach AR visors, and fire virtual Koopa Shells at Team Bowser characters across scenes based on Mario Kart 8 courses. Coordinated steering triggers drift bonuses, and point totals determine whether Team Mario or Team Bowser wins. The queue is themed as Bowser’s Castle with preshows led by Lakitu.
Universal Studios Hollywood's Super Nintendo World, located in the park's Lower Lot, opened in 2023. The themed land transforms the aesthetics of classic Mario games into a physical, interactive environment using blocky geometries, kinetic animated elements, and augmented-reality gameplay. The land centers on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge inside Bowser’s Castle and extends outward through multi-level paths, coin-collecting challenges, and Power-Up Band interactions.
Universal Studios Hollywood, opened in 1964 on the historic Universal lot, blends an active film studio with a theme park built around Universal’s film and television properties. Spread across Upper and Lower Lots linked by the Starway escalators, it offers views of working soundstages alongside attractions that use sets, animatronics, motion simulators, and practical effects. The signature Studio Tour moves through real backlot streets and production areas, while themed lands, dining, and retail spaces extend Universal’s storytelling across the property.
Well… here’s something completely different from me! It might still be a Vertorama… but it’s definitely the most different Vertorama that I’ve ever done!!
I’ve been feeling quite bored and uninspired with my own photography lately… and I sometimes feel like I’ve already shot every conceivable subject within 100 kilometer radius of my house!
I’ve always been a realist in my approach to landscape photography… trying to find and capture the most beautiful moments and compositions possible… and processing and presenting the resulting images as realistically as possible. My main objective for the past few years has been to capture the “definitive” sunset photograph… one that is so jaw-droppingly beautiful… that everyone who sees it will want to have a framed print hanging on their wall! That’s quite a challenge…
My determination to capture only the most photogenic locations possible might be a fairly admirable objective… but it does mean that I am only inclined to go out shooting at sunrise or sunset… and only when the sky is full of beautiful puffy clouds. If we experienced these perfect conditions on a daily basis it wouldn’t be a problem… but these days we’re entering our windy, cloudless season… which really doesn’t inspire me to go out shooting!
So… after much soul-searching and looking at other artists’ work… I’ve started questioning my own motives and reasons for this realism approach to photography. What am I really trying to achieve? Surely my main objective should be to “touch” the emotions of the viewers of my photos? Is this realism approach really the best way of doing that? Perhaps the early impressionist artists understood something that I’ve never considered before… that leaving some visual information up to the viewer’s interpretation… would enhance the emotional impact of an image?
I’d love to know what you think about this.
I’d also really like to thank Paul Grand for inspiring me to use his beautiful Flypaper Textures during the processing this image.

First time using augmented reality - it's a strange experience as your phone sees things that aren't really there. In this case celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the installation of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "The Gates" in Central Park. The AR only works when you're in a certain location, the app alerts you when you're at the right place, then you need to scan a QR code and finally you can see the gates. You can't zoom in or out and composing an image is very limited.
You're experiencing things through the screen of your phone while everyone else is walking by having no idea what you're seeing.
Inspired by the song of Stone Temple Pilots.

Today we say goodbye to Scott Weiland, and I hope my work is a good tribute to the massive inspiration their music has been on me.
I'll be launching the Augmented Reality on the 6th of December 2015.
a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.
