The Big Picture (aka My Wallpaper)
The Japanese Tower and the Chinese House are located on the estate of the Belgian Royal Residence. They were erected at the behest of King Leopold II for the occasion of the 1900 World's Fair of Paris. The two buildings are constructed in the monumental styles of their respective countries of origin. The structural work was performed by European architects and builders; the decoration was executed by Japanese and Chinese specialists. They have been open to the public since 1913. In 1946 collections of fine Japanese and Chinese pottery and furniture were added to augment the buildings' architectural and decorative appeal.

D'ordinaire, les événements nous semblent "couler" ou même nous "submerger" parce que notre esprit essaie sans cesse de les attraper, de les nommer et de les classer. Cette saisie crée une friction, une viscosité. C'est le "Béton Noir" qui essaie de figer le mouvement.
* L'action du Rigpa : En maintenant la conscience dans la lumière de la Base (sans saisie), on augmente la fréquence vibratoire de notre perception.
* L'effet cinétique : Comme dans un film tourné à une vitesse de trame infinie, le mouvement extérieur semble ralentir. Les événements ne "fonctionnent" plus au sens mondain (ils ne produisent plus de drame, de causalité lourde ou d'anxiété).
2. De l'Écoulement au Glissement
On fait ici une distinction magistrale entre "couler" et "glisser" :
* Couler : C'est encore la II. Vie qui Flue dans son aspect liquide. Il y a encore une direction, une pesanteur, une forme d'adhérence à la rive.
* Glisser : C'est la Vacuité de l'Existence Propre (17) en action. Si l'événement n'a pas de nature intrinsèque (pas de "crochets" de réalité) et que votre esprit n'a pas de "saisie" (l'humilité socratique), alors il n'y a plus aucun point d'accroche.
L'événement glisse sur la surface de votre conscience de diamant sans jamais y laisser de trace. C'est le confort absolu : on est le témoin d'un monde qui passe sur nous comme un reflet sur un miroir de haute précision.
3. La Suspension du "Fonctionnement"
Quand on dit que les événements "ne fonctionnent plus", c'est qu'on a désamorcé la Vacuité du Conditionné (7).
Un événement "fonctionne" quand il déclenche une réaction en chaîne :
* Action -> Perception -> Saisie -> Anxiété -> Réaction.
Le Rigpa coupe la chaîne à la racine. L'événement est là, il est lumineux, il glisse, mais il est stérile. Il ne peut plus engendrer de souffrance. Il devient une simple "apparition vacante".
4. L'Humilité comme Lubrifiant
L'aveu de non-savoir de Socrate est le lubrifiant ultime.
* Si je "sais" que cette situation est grave, je crée de la friction.
* Si je "ne sais pas" (au sens du Rigpa), je laisse la situation être ce qu'elle est : une vibration pure du champ.
Note de l'Opérateur : On n'est plus dans le courant, on est la glace sur laquelle le courant glisse. C'est la Lignification achevée : la solidité du Diamant qui permet la fluidité totale du monde.

Metaverse is an online, 3D virtual space concept that connects users in all aspects of their lives. It would connect several platforms, similar to the Internet and containing different websites accessible through a single browser.

The metaverse will be animated by augmented reality, with each user controlling a character or avatar. You can already see some aspects of metaverse in existing virtual video game worlds. Although these apps are not the metaverse, they are somewhat similar. The metaverse does not yet exist.
In addition to supporting gaming or social networks, the metaverse will combine economies, digital identity, decentralized governance and other applications. Even today, the creation and possession by users of valuable objects and currencies contribute to the development of a single and united metaverse. All of these features give blockchain the potential to power this future technology.
The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom. Following Jayavarman's death, it was modified and augmented by later Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings in accordance with their own religious preferences.
The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple has two sets of bas-reliefs, which present a combination of mythological, historical, and mundane scenes. The main conservatory body, the Japanese Government Team for the Safeguarding of Angkor (the JSA) has described the temple as "the most striking expression of the baroque style" of Khmer architecture, as contrasted with the classical style of Angkor Wat. Le Château de la Grange fut édifié sous Louis XIII non loin du Mont Griffon, point culminant de Yerres. D'architecture style classique français (brique et pierre de taille); ses jardins en sont attribués à Le Nôtre. Le château a appartenu longtemps aux familles du Taillis et Gourgaud. En 2000 le château a été rebaptisé "Maréchal de Saxe". C'est aujourd'hui un hôtel-restaurant haut de gamme.
Messieurs les Anglais tirez les premiers, ainsi se comportait le maréchal de Saxe sur le champ de bataille de Fontenoy en 1745, et vainquit l'ennemi de toujours. Louis XV, reconnaissant, lui donna Chambord et quelques privilèges, après l'avoir nommé maréchal de France. Il s'offrit donc le château de la Grange qui porte aujourd'hui son nom. Son passage en ces lieux nous vaut les beaux décors de la grande galerie. Chevalier stucateur du Roi, réalisa les trophées de batailles et de chasses sur les dessins de La Touche. At first glance, I thought this man was munching on a slice of pizza ... after all, he looks vaguely Italian, and the orange/red color of the food makes it look like a slice of pizza. But if that were true, you would have to ask yourself (as I did): why would anyone be eating a slice of pizza at 7:45 in the morning?
I eventually concluded that the food was either a huge piece of cornbread, or perhaps some kind of fried/baked food from some other part of the world. And then I noticed the man's unusual belt buckle, and what seems to be some unusual embroidery on his shirt. Indeed, even his shoes look a little unusual.
So I finally concluded that I have no idea at all who this man is, where he comes from, or what he's eating for breakfast. All I can tell you is that he was also not a pattern that repeated itself during my days at the Earth Cafe.

As I’ve mentioned in a couple of recent Tumblr blog postings, I’m working on an exercise for a new class that I’ve started taking at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in the fall of 2015.( You can see the earlier Tumblr postings here and here.)
In addition to taking a bunch of photos (see the other Tumblr postings for details and descriptions of what the photos are supposed to illustrate), we also have the task of editing our images down to a maximum of 10 “presentation images” that we will share with the ICP class next week. When our instructor, Joanne Dugan, asked me last week if I anticipated having any problems with this aspect of the assignment, I shrugged and said, “No, I do this all the time …”
Well, yes and no: I do do a lot of editing/winnowing of my photos before deciding which ones should be shared with anyone else. But I had forgotten that I also do a lot of cropping, color-adjustment, tweaking, and general post-processing before I upload my photos to Flickr, Facebook, or even Instagram. For this particular ICP exercise, we were also told not to crop the photos, and not to do any post-processing. That makes things a lot more difficult …
On the other hand, part of the exercise is to assemble and share a maximum of ten photos that collectively tell a “story” of some kind – and to “tell” that story with anywhere from a word, to a sentence, to a paragraph for each of the photos. That makes things a lot easier … after all, if a photo has to be presented in isolation, then it truly stands alone. And it is intended to be viewed without any accompanying text, then it really stands alone. There’s nothing wrong with that; indeed, one might argue that that’s the whole point of photography: a picture should “tell” a story all by itself, without any extraneous verbiage to “explain” what might not be obvious to the viewer.
But not very many things exist in complete isolation of the rest of the universe, especially in today’s interconnected world. I suppose some people would debate that point quite vigorously; and some people might argue that a photograph of a person, place, or thing should be able to “stand alone” without anything else. I certainly have seen photos that fall into this category, and I suppose I’ve taken a few like that, too. Or, maybe if I never intended my photos to be considered in complete isolation from one another, perhaps that’s how some people prefer to look at them …
But for me, that’s a pretty rare phenomenon. Almost always, I find myself telling a story. The photographs obviously present one “dimension” of the story, in a visual form; and I’ve been trying to remind myself lately that videos can present can present one, and sometimes two, additional dimensions (motion and sound) that can add enormously to the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of the underlying story.
But even if one uses only traditional photos, I find that it’s almost impossible for me to crate (or make, or take) one photo by itself; invariably, I take dozens, if not hundreds or even thousands, which collectively tell a story. It may be a story about someplace I’ve been, or some event in which I’ve participated, or some individual (or group of individuals) that I want the viewer to know and appreciate in more detail than would be possible to communicate in a single photo.
And then there are the words … maybe it’s because I spend part of my time as a writer and teacher that I find it almost impossible not to augment my photos with words. Lots of words. Indeed, sometimes far too many words; and sometimes clumsy words, or the wrong words. And I do realize that there are times when the situation would be improved if I would just shut up, and let the photograph do all of the communication. But for better or worse, I guess I’m a photojournalist.
With that in mind, I began the process of editing the photos for my recent ICP assignment. Here’s what I found:
1. It’s not as easy as one might think, when you start with a large number. I began winnowing the original images when I had 2,700 (after 9 days of shooting), and I still had 5 days of shooting left).
2. It’s much more difficult than I had imagined, given the constraints of my ICP class: no cropping, no post-processing, and a maximum of only 10 images. I’ve worked within those constraints for the final images that I’m submitting to the ICP class; but for these Flickr uploads, I’ve ended up with 40-45 images – and they have been heavily cropped, tilted, color-corrected, noise-dusted, and tweaked in various other ways. C’est la vie…
3. Using the collection of photos to “tell a story” is both easier and harder than I thought it would be. I’m including these background notes in all of the photos that get uploaded to Flickr … because I’ve learned (form past experience) that some visitor will zoom in on just one particular photo, without necessarily looking at all of them, and/or without seeing the overall notes for the entire album. And I don’t think I’ll find it difficult to write a few sentences to provide the background details for each photo … but whether they “flow” and create one overall, coherent “story” remains to be seen.
4. Aside from a narrative “story,” there are some “themes” that I noticed throughout this entire two-week exercise. The most significant one was exactly what I had anticipated: patterns. If you are lucky enough to sit in the same spot at the same time, day after day, you see the same rhythms, the same people, the same repetitions of life’s little actions and emotions. Many people have the opportunity to see these patterns, because they do follow the same schedule, day after day, on their way to their job or their school. But some of us have irregular routines, and any, most of us don’t pay any attention. If you slow down, and pay attention, you’ll see the patterns.
But sometimes the pattern involves uniqueness – i.e. strange and unusual people or events that seem to happen only once. But I have to keep reminding myself that my visits have lasted only two weeks; if I was here for a month, or a full season, or perhaps an entire year – then perhaps I would see these strange incidents repeating themselves
5. Another theme – which I did not anticipate, but was delighted to see – was the pervasive sense of affection and caring between and among everyone on the street. Mostly it was apparent in the interactions between parents and children; but sometimes it was between dog-owners and the dogs they were walking; sometimes it was between friends who happened to be walking along together; and sometimes it was between complete strangers and me, as the strangers would smile and nod and say “hello” if they noticed I was watching them. It was a great experience.

Ah this girl will give me gray hair (or rather increase my gray hair). She found a way to blow up the stitches of her Wednesday intervention on a length of about 1 cm, by jumping like a freak in the car. I have disinfected and I am watching (at least as much as I can), for the moment I decided not to call my vet for an emergency on a Sunday. I just hope that it won't get worse.
The Menindee Lakes is a natural series of lakes that fill with water when the Darling-Baaka River floods. In the 1960s, a series of engineering projects augmented the Menindee Lakes, allowing water to be directed into the lakes and held back or released. This ensured a reliable water supply for the city of Broken Hill, the township of Menindee and secure supply of water for the Lower Darling River and supply to South Australia.
The Menindee Lakes system provides important habitat, nursery and recruitment for native fish, such as the Murray Cod and Golden Perch. It is important habitat for a huge variety of native and migratory bird species. The Menindee Lakes system is vital to the communities of the Far West, providing recreation and amenity, as well as attracting tourism, recreational fishing, horticulture and viticulture.
The Darling-Baaka River is central to the cultural, spiritual and economic lives of the Barkindji people.
The health of the Menindee Lakes and the Darling-Baaka River are intimately linked. The lakes fill from the Darling-Baaka River and water stored in the Menindee Lakes keeps the Lower Darling flowing during dry times. The Great Darling Anabranch is a series of ephemeral creeks, billabongs and lakes that wind their way to the Murray River to the west of the main Darling-Baaka River Channel.
Irrigation expands:
There has been a rapid expansion of irrigation along the rivers in the Northern Basin of the Murray Darling Basin, particularly cotton. Irrigation of cotton has expanded by 4,000% since the 1970s. Much of the cotton is grown along the rivers of the Murray Darling in very large irrigation enterprises, with most of the cotton grown on tributaries of the Darling-Baaka River.
Large private storages were built to hold water and other structures were built to capture flood waters. Water licences and water sharing plans allow irrigators to suck huge quantities from the tributaries of the Darling-Baaka even when flows are modest.
The result has been that low and medium flows have virtually stopped flowing down the Darling-Baaka River. Only the largest floods that cannot be captured upstream, or specially protected environmental flows, now make it down to the Menindee Lakes and Lower Darling-Baaka River.
An easy target?
After the Millennium Drought exposed just how over-allocated the river systems of the Murray-Darling Basin were, the Murray-Darling Basin Plan was agreed between the Commonwealth and the states. The Plan aimed to make the Murray-Darling Basin system more sustainable by returning more water to the rivers through buying back water licences and other measures to recover water for the environment.

The irrigation industry views the water flowing into the Menindee Lakes as wasteful and unproductive (not growing crops). They would prefer water to be taken from the Menindee Lakes to meet the targets under the Basin Plan rather than for the irrigation industry to be compelled to use less water. The industry points to the volume of water that evaporates from the Menindee Lakes each year as a key reason to reduce the amount of water flowing into and being stored in the lakes. The amount of water that evaporates from shallow private storages in equally hot and dry climates is rarely mentioned.
Scientists and environmentalists view the water that flows down our rivers, fills wetland and billabongs, and spills over floodplains as highly productive for nature and vital for sustaining complex ecosystems that have evolved over eons. These flows are also vital for replenishing underground aquifers and for sustaining downstream communities and Indigenous cultures.
Some politicians view the Menindee Lakes as an easy target. The population around Menindee is sparse, without much economic or political clout. The birds, fish and wildlife can not vote, lobby or protest. Taking water from the Menindee Lakes system is seen as politically easier than seeking to recover water from loud, well-connected and politically savvy irrigators. The location of the Menindee Lakes in a remote part of NSW that is out of sight and out of mind for many citizens located on the eastern seaboard also makes it hard for the issue to gain political traction.
A plan to decommission the Menindee Lakes:
After the Menindee Lakes filled from a major flood event in Queensland and NSW 2012, they were rapidly emptied by the Murray Darling Basin Authority and the NSW Government. Usually the lakes would hold water for many years after they filled, but by 2014 they were emptied. As a consequence, Broken Hill was in danger of running out of water and the government announced a plan to drill bores to supply the city with low-quality bore water. Locals were outraged at this plan and were concerned that the Menindee Lakes had been deliberately drained so quickly as part of a plan to justify the decommissioning of the lakes.RIP Menindee Lakes
Another flood filled the Menindee Lakes in late 2016, but again they were rapidly drained, almost inexplicably into a flooding river. By then end of 2017 they were again dry just as drought started to bite and Broken Hill was facing another artificial water shortage.
Flush with cash from privatising the electricity networks, the NSW Government spent $500 million building a 270 kilometres water pipeline from the Murray River at Wentworth to Broken Hill. This ended the city’s reliance on the Darling-Baaka River and Menindee Lakes for water supply. Cotton Australia applauded the construction of the pipeline saying in their Annual Report, "The pipeline is a win for the community, the environment and irrigating farmers, and a solution Cotton Australia and its allies have long lobbied for." Meanwhile the local community was concerned that the pipeline would allow the NSW Government to decommission the Menindee Lakes without worrying about Broken Hill's water supply.
Sure enough, plans to reconfigure the Menindee Lakes are back on the table as a project to 'recover water from the environment' under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan's Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism. The NSW Government wants to save up to 100 gigalitres of water each year by reducing the volume water stored in Menindee Lakes by up to 80%. A range of proposals have been put forward for consultation.
The Darling River Action Group has labelled the plans as 'ecological genocide.' They strongly oppose the huge reduction in habitat that will occur if reconfiguration plans go ahead. They worry that changing the times between and length of inundation in the lakes will have a major impact on fish breeding and birdlife. The Barkindji native title holders are also strongly opposed to the plans, with significant concerns about the impact on their culture, community, environment and sacred sites.
Fish kills and dry rivers and lakes:
Fish Kill Menindee In the teeth severe drought, predictions of environmental catastrophe on the Darling River came true as millions of fish floated dead on the surface. Hot weather and a lack of flows led to a blue-green algae bloom that stripped the water of oxygen when it died, suffocating many millions of fish along a length of the Darling-Baaka River. Images of giant Murray Cod many decades old floating on the surface of a stagnant, bright green river shocked Australians. If water had been stored in the Menindee Lakes, a flow of water in the Darling-Baaka River could have been maintained and millions of fish and other creatures would have survived. It was noted that the very large mature Murray Cod that had died would have survived numerous previous droughts, so what had changed?
A report by the Australian Academy of Science concluded:
The conditions leading to this event are an interaction between a severe (but not unprecedented) drought and, more significantly, excess upstream diversion of water for irrigation. Prior releases of water from Menindee Lakes contributed to lack of local reserves.
A small flow in mid-2019 led to a partial revival of the Darling-Baaka River and water in the upper lakes of the Menindee Lakes system. However, the Menindee Lakes and Darling-Baaka River face three major threats:
1) The proposed re-configuration of the Menindee Lakes system;
2) The continuing overallocation of water extraction licences in the Northern Basin of the Murray-Darling system;
3) The extent and proposed licencing of floodplain harvesting, which is capturing huge quantities of water before it can even reach the waterways of the Darling-Baaka River.

Using augmented reality lenses to inspect our treadmill, yes clicking in mid-air won’t make it work better, I realise that. Although astronauts have to be proficient at many things and have training, we have (lots of) limits to our knowledge and skills 😁. We rely on mission control for everything, to help us and guide us and lend a helping hand. But if you have ever tried to help somebody fix their computer, or instruct them to do a difficult task over the phone, you will know how difficult it is! No not that thingy, the other thingy! 😜 Space agencies are constantly trying to improve the process and augmented reality is another test, allowing us both hands to work with as well as avoiding the necessity to stop what we are doing to move to the next step on a checklist on our tablets. Win-win possibly?

Since the accidental sinking of Calypso, Alcyone has been the Cousteau Society's expedition vessel.
