Colorado Springs Veteran Henry Fear Jr. is examined for fitting with a new hearing aid by VA Audiologist Patricia Polizzi at the PFC Lindstrom VA Clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mr. Fear will receive a new in-ear Bluetooth-enabled hearing aid that will allow him to listen to smartphone calls directly in the prosthetic with the touch of a button.
Mr. Fear was one of the 372 Veterans who were scheduled for an appointment today as part of the National Access Stand Down taking place at all VA facilities across the country.
This is my paternal grandmother, who I helped get to an audiologist appointment recently.
For those with an elderly relative who is experiencing dementia and s/he refuses to keep hearing aids in the ears (as she was), there may be a different way to go about helping your person maintain connection to the outside world.
G'ma's audiologist commented that many people in this situation have increasingly sensitive ear canals so putting a hearing aid in there can cause them discomfort (which they very sensibly avoid by removing the hearing devices!). Under the advisement of the audiologist I paid a worthwhile visit to Radio Shack to buy a little pocket-sized device called an audio amplifier. You can plug in an external headset and talk at normal range into the amp. The whole setup (pocket amp, headphones, a pack of AAA batteries) cost under $60 and after I took it back to the assisted living facility to see if she'd tolerate this new thing the RAs and I delighted in-
1.)not having to yell (hollering to communicate is not done with an angry tone yet feels too much like mean-yelling!), and
2)seeing G'ma actually HEAR the vacuum cleaner that someone was using in the building.
She engaged. : )
I wrote about her here.

So we went to the audiologist and the lady made a mould of Rhys's right ear - she thinks his left side is too good to make an aid worthwhile. In fact she's not convinced that an aid will be that much benefit to his right side because his hearing loss is borderline, so we'll see in a month's time.
The audiologist gave Rhys a bit of the putty to hold and tell her when it was hard - he was thrilled when it went solid and when she said he could take it home! Rhys has chosen a sparkly blue mould if they do decide he should have a hearing aid.
I love the finish and I love the car...
I can almost hear my love at the Audiologist's office...;))

The old corpus is sustaining a bit of abuse these days. "Old" being the key word. 41 years I've been polluting and marking up this body, and stuff is crapping out on it.
Couple of weeks ago I spent an afternoon sprucing up the library at the Big Man's school, including spray-painting the book carts. They were the color of dried putty when I started, a shade I call "soul-crushing beige," and I painted em black. All I had. And just doing that wrecked my knees for a week. I was forced to admit that a) I have bursitis and b) it was acting up. Plus, pushing the button on 4 cans of paint seems to have injured the nerves in the tips of both my index fingers. They still feel tingly and numb.
Next, I booked appointments at the good eye doctors and the audiologist. Can't fucking hear. Too much time spent directly in front of the stage. I always stand stage left, and when they finally check my hearing I won't be surprised if it's worse on that side. The eye doctor needed to check my nascent cataract (cataract?! ack!), but while I was there agreed that I need bifocals. Dilated me all to hell. (Dilated my eyes. It's been 4 years since I was last in labor, but that coulda sounded funny - what was your eye doctor doing down THERE?!)
Speaking of labor, Big Man's delivery was very hard. After he was born, my left leg didn't work at all for a few days. I didn't have a whole lot of follow-up with the neurologist because ten days after Big Man was born, travel within NYC became difficult and doctors got kind of inaccessible. It got back to normal on its own, but just lately I've been noticing my left leg tripping me up. That foot just doesn't follow through on a step as fast as the other one.
Last spring, I was using a mandoline to slice potatoes. Sliced the side of the tip of my pinkie off to boot. Went to the urgent care and they gave me a tetanus shot and got the bleeding stopped. That finger is all slanty now.
And yesterday, I was using garden snips to deadhead spent flowers. Big Man was picking peas for dinner and asked me a question. I turned my head to answer him and snipped off the side of the tip of my ring finger. Took three different clotting attempts this time to get the bleeding stopped.
So if you've been keeping score, I'm down to 6 fingers operating at full capacity. I'm typing this one-handed, but not to fret - because I've spent so much time as a software trainer, I am pretty speedy one-handed. Also I can type upside down, but there's not much call for that.
Bursitis. Cataract. Hearing loss. Bifocals. Lazy foot. Insensate fingertips. Quite an inventory.

A traditional simply makes the sound wave larger to amplify sounds.
The conventional analog hearing aids are designed with a specific frequency response based on the listener's audiogram. In turn, the audiologist directs the manufacturer about the settings to install. Although some adjustments need to be made, the device works to amplify all sounds – including noise and speech – in the same way. This technology is affordable and can be used by the budget-conscious consumers. Analog hearing aids work for all the different types of hearing loss as well.
BTE Hearing Aids
According to the different wearing method, we can divide hearing aids into BTE(Behind the ear), ITE (in the ear), Body worn (we also call them Pocket hearing aid) hearing aid. BTE included ear hook, ear zoom, open fit, RIC and so on. There is the external hearing aid. And behind the ear style hearing aids are a lot sleeker and slimmer than they used to be giving you a very comfortable fit.

This marvellous little necklace is a Nokia Wireless Loopset LPS-5 and it is da awesome! As many folk know, I need to wear hearing aids, and am generally happy to do so ie I have no issues with them other than they can be occasionally annoying (hmmm maybe I should blog on my hearing aid experiences).
Anyway, my hearing aids have a setting to pick up audio loops in places that support them eg some lecture theatres, concert halls and so forth. Though it does get frustrating when a place supports it but it's not switched on. The loop effectively means I get a private audio channel on anything said into the microphone, and all other noises are blocked out.
Phonecalls however, remain problematic and I've never got the hang of them. My new phone has better aural projection but the above device is an audio loop generator, with microphone. It connects to the phone via bluetooth. I had a 2 hour WebEx this morning and could hear everything clearly and they could hear me easily, and the phone was sitting a couple of feet away. My hearing aids were tuned to the loop in the device, which in turn was connected to the phone via bluetooth.
MPOW were going to buy headphones for the team and I just happened to ask about hearing impaired options. They did some research and I checked with my audiologist and consequently MPOW bought me one. Absolutely marvellous!

No all the digital hearing aid are programmable and what does programmable mean?
It means that an audiologist can modify a hearing aid’s settings for your personal hearing loss – it also means that they can set the aid up so that you can hear the sounds that you want to hear in your everyday environments. There will default options for common situations such as: at home, at a party, at the theatre, listening to music, and so on. You can ask your audiologist to modify these to suit your needs.
Programmable circuit features allow the hearing instrument to be variably reset and adjusted (via an external computer platform and software) closely to the patients targeted needs.
The advantages are the more precise acoustic adjustments that can be made when the product is fitted to the patient. More exact variable adjustments to individual patient preferences can be easily made while wearing (fitting) the aids during the fitting process and the patient can "test drive" different settings in various created environmental conditions (quiet, cafeteria noise, traffic, theater, groups at cocktail parties, etc.)

I refuse to be ashamed or embarrassed about disabilities, so I had my new hearing aid made in purple. Apparently so few people ask for this, my audiologist had to argue with the earmold people! Yes, this is what I wanted, lol. If it came with a bow or rhinestones, I'd get that, too.

It’s good to have an audiologist in the family. I’m getting some new custom earphones, and Scott was kind enough to do earmolds for me. Thanks Dr. Scott!
