"The harsh climate has given way to some... strange life. After studying the social infrastructure we've concluded our primary subject has the rank of queen of a matriarchal colony; founded upon what we can best estimate as perceived visual attractiveness. They however, are extremely savage creatures and are best to be left alone."

Built for Round 1 of the 2019 BioCup.

Idea was to build what could live in the harsh beauty of Venus' landscape. The goddess Venus was often symbolized by a rose, hence the staff.

Family heirloom: a functioning gramophone, manufactured in Switzerland by Lordophonic® in the 1930s. The casing is quite worn.

The 78 rpm disc displayed was made by “Odeon” Co. and bears the numbers “A154312 (Go 311).” It contains the song:

“Dhiati metho,” composed by Attik in 1926, sung by George Savary.

[ Words originally on the disc in Greek:

Γιατὶ Μεθῶ (Ἀττίκ)

Μονῳδία Γ. Σαβαρῆ μετὰ χοροῦ

Συνοδεία Ὀρχήστρας ὑπὸ τὴν διεύθυνσιν τοῦ Γ. Κωνσταντινίδου. ]

Jones, up ahead, and Janneh with Neil, the donkey, This is early morning and a tanka tanka (local, often rickety, mini-bus taxi) had probably zoomed past us as and disturbed the ever-present red dust on the roads, leaving us covered in its wake!

This sandbar went under water very quickly and it was quite a scramble and a quick wade to get the equipment out and safe. A learning experience. Ridgevale Beach- Chatham, MA.

The KU 100 dummy head is a binaural stereo microphone. It resembles the human head and has two microphone capsules built into the ears. When listening through high-quality headphones it gives the illusion of being right at the scene of the acoustic events.

When using the KU 100 dummy head, the binaural stereo experience moves the listener into the scene of the original performance, in contrast to other space-related recording techniques, where the acoustic event is moved to the listener. The dummy head is also used in many industrial applications as a measuring device, for example in acoustic research.

With a microphone built into each ear when the recorded audio signal is reproduced through high-quality headphones the listener perceives a sound image almost identical to the one he would have heard at the recording location of the dummy head. When played back through loudspeakers, the sound matches to a high degree that of conventional stereo microphones, placed in the same position. However, a superior quality is added, that of a distinct spatial depth perception. The KU 100 dummy head is just as easy to use during creative radio drama productions, music recordings where the room acoustics should be recorded at the same time, and to preserve natural sounds of all kinds. In addition, the dummy head is frequently used to examine and document the influence of noise in industrial applications at various working places under realistic conditions.

This is the rather wonderful Mr Bah, who we had met previously when we stayed with one of only 5 female alkalo's in Basse Santa Su, Fatou Dansu. When I was first introduced, a thought instantly flitted through my mind: oh so humble, Mr Bumble.....Mr Bah was like a Dickens character that I really wasn't sure of at first. When he shook your hand, he stroked it, very gently, with the other. We soon realised that the reason he did this is because he was getting some kind of tactile sense of who you were. It turned out that he was a Marabout - the greatly respected medicine men, spiritual advisors, koranic teachers, sooth-sayers, if you like, of The Gambia (and West Africa in general).

He invited us to visit his village a week or so later, Tuba Dabbo, which was right off our course, deep into the bush, but we were very happy to go there (you can read more about this in a coming blog entry www.930kmafricanodyssey.tumblr.com).

This is Mr Bah reading mine and Florio's future in the sand of his hut, whilst he crouched on the ground. It was an amazing experience.

Ugly looking homemade mic stand and pop screen (pop blocker) combo for recording vocals and so forth without all the extra loud popping sibilance and plosive sounds. I looked up plans and not having a stand for the mic to begin with, needed to modify them. I combined pieces of plans based on what I saw at the stores. Hit Goodwill, score. Hit Big Lots, found nothing of use. Then hit Lowe's, and Walmart to clean up the rest of the parts needed.

The following monstrosity works pretty well (despite all the duct tape covering over metal or reinforcing places I did not want to move around much) and was made from the following:

used heavy metal-based lamp with snake neck - $2.50 @ Goodwill

plant loop stake (metal plant support) $0.98 @ Lowe's

2" by 1 1/2" ABS bushing 5 (pipe fitting piece) $0.66 @ Lowe's

#24 clamp $0.97 @ Lowe's

#28 clamp $0.99 @ Lowe's

Black "Knee High" pantyhose (two pair) $2.00 @ Wal-Mart

Mini basketball backboard $1.00 @ Wal-Mart (the craft section was out of embroidery hoops)

wall anchor screws and plastic anchors free, had them

purple duct tape, free, had roll

bread ties, free (used to keep the hose in place on the hoop since I misplaced my plastic zip ties)

scissors

wire cutters

phillips and flathead screwdrivers

Logitech (Konami branded) USB mic that came with one of our PS2 Karaoke Revolution games

Total Price: $9.10 before tax, plus gas driving around to the stores.

It works well, and a side by side comparison I conducted was amazing in the effect a simple $10 could bring, versus the cheapest $10 pop screen hooked up to who knows how expensive a mic stand. I wanted one I could use anywhere a desk or table was free. Score!

Yup -- its a bit of a mess, but this is the rig we use for recording all our podcasts (Cache-A-Maniacs, Cachers of the Round Table, and Geocaching Podcast), or at least the side at which I sit. This is most of the hardware hauled out (for the live recording of the Cachers of the Round Table Ep. 10), but the gear changes based on the recording. Most of the time the iPod and MacBook (and its MAudio interface) aren't there, nor is the Telos One Desktop. We usually have just the mixer and the rack case with the microphones and the monitor with keyboard and mouse. The Telos One Desktop is used to get a third POTS phone line into the system while the MacBook is connected for Gizmo Project. The iPod serves up the bumpers and voicemail as neccessary (uncommon for most recordings -- its typically for live shows). But this all ends up in the dining room of our small apartment so we set-up for a couple days, then tear down to restore the apartment to normal.

We took a boat ride over the James Island, which is about 2 miles of the main land, in the River Gambia, The nearest village is Juffereh.

Florio had just taken a portrait of the female alkalo there and her son very kindly offered to take us over to the island (which was once one of the major ports, for taking slaves to the 'New World'). I had been there many years ago, in a tourist group. However, this time we were allowed to go over once all the tourists had gone (hey, we were in with the Alkalo and her son now!) and it was a completely different experience (again, more on this in a later post, to come, on the blog). It was decidedly eerie, yet magical, on what is now a very tiny island.

I took this shot on the way back, of Samba, as we sat in the pirogue. Another stunning sunset.

Been doing a lot more video recording recently, really trying hard to get as much footage as possible so that I can practice editing & work out how to use my software properly.

The few storyboard type videos I've done so far seem to be going well, so its good encouragement to go further with it :)

The actual video footage recording side of things is pretty much covered at the moment, thanks to the help of my 7D & my Go Pro HD but I've found that my audio recording capabilities is lacking & that the onboard mics of my Gopro and my 7D were letting me down.

So I've done some research & ended up with these two gadgets!

The Rode Video Mic will be used for on camera recordings, the quality is far superior to the onboard mic, not to mention being directional eliminates a lot of unneeded noise!

& the Zoom H1 whose quality is incredible for such a small machine, will be used for syncing audio with either my 7D or my GoPro, should improve things massively!

Also the Zoom H1 was brought back for me by a friend who was on a trip to New York :D Huge thank you to him for the effort in doing that!

This picture shows them equipped with their optional but very much recommended wind diffusers.

Lighting was done with an Alien Bee 800 equipped with beauty dish boomed directly overhead.

Right time to get some practice using them :)

Technology is a vital part of our life and with passing years innovation has become a crux of our existence. We are evolving by leaps and bounds into another frontier with technological improvements which were earlier considered as a mere figment of our imagination. Once which used to be just our thoughts are slowly transforming into reality and all thanks to the technological advancements.

Mikeme Pocket is also one such innovation which was born out of creativity. It is the first smart wireless audio recorder and comes with a clip-on microphone. It has been created for the professionals who are into journalism, film making, video graphing and content creation. This kind of device is very beneficial for them and lets you concentrate on what is in front of a camera than thinking about the sound so much. Mikeme app helps you to control all audio aspects like level of sound, etc. with your smartphone. If you shoot with your smartphone the video and audio will automatically sync, also it is that hassle-free. As it doesn’t require any additional receivers it is very easy to carry anywhere, anytime. It can work as a standalone recorder as it captures 96 kHz/24-bit qualities on 16GB of internal storage.
