Each of these dabbas (described as "the ubiquitous lunchboxes" of Bombay/Mumbai) has been fitted with video and sound. With earphones, you could see and listen to the individual sounds of street vendors, entertainers, even corporate executives of the Bombay/Mumbai area. Without them, you could see and hear the same sounds -- but all at once, suggesting the din of a Bombay/Mumbai street. Part of the Gateway Bombay exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.

 

160,000 of these dabbas, each containing a home-cooked lunch, are delivered every day to Bombay's middle-class office towers by a small army of bicycle-riding dabbawallahs. After lunch they're all collected again and brought back to the homes where the meals were prepared. This cycle is repeated every day.

Audiopad is a composition and performance instrument for electronic music which tracks the positions of objects on a tabletop surface and converts their motion into music. One can pull sounds from a giant set of samples, juxtapose archived recordings against warm synthetic melodies, cut between drum loops to create new beats, and apply digital processing all at the same time on the same table. Audiopad not only allows for spontaneous reinterpretation of musical compositions, but also creates a visual and tactile dialogue between itself, the performer, and the audience.

The Audio Mixer controls eveything that goes "on air". This needs to be steered by a technician. The signal from mixer which is analogue is converted via various processing modules in a digital signal. The various slides which can be seen, are used to amplify what goes out on the mike, the music that is played from the CD players and the sounds (jingles, advertisements and music) that comes from the computer. Each of these slides link up to the various equipment mentioned.
