Most folks might not like it if our display aquariums looked like this, but it would be genuine! I think it's beautiful- it really helps understand the conspicuous colouration of cardinal tetras, too.
Frighteningly low- unless you're a blackwater fish perfectly adapted to this habitat- like a cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi).

The cichlids in these rocky pools were shy but eventually curious, so would come over to check me out.
This tiny pool held dozens of small tetras (mainly cardinal tetras), who may or may not make it through the rest of the dry season.

It became quite difficult to get up the tributary due to the low water level, but it was nothing the Brazilian fellows couldn't handle with the help of machetes. And we helped with the boats too, honestly!

Apparently if you followed this stream up all the way, you would find marble hatchetfish, but I didn't have the chance to get to the top unfortunately. Next time!
