The massive roof at Casa Mila (La Pedrera) in Barcelona, Spain is supported by the equally gorgeous and architecturally brilliant structures in the attic without adding much weight.
Gaudi constructed the attic on the floor slab of the top floor to support the rooftop. Inspired by skeletal structures of animals, he used 270 catenary arches made with brick, resemble a whale’s skeleton as they extend in long tunnels into the attic. It is a perfect example of a technical and mechanical solution: insulation, lighting, and ventilation.

One of the rooms in the old holding spaces on the 4th floor of the Putnam County Courthouse in Cookeville, TN. Now they are just used for storage space...pictures, plat maps, survey maps, boxes of hand written receipt books, tax records, etc.

The 51 W. Warren and 71 W. Warren buildings circa 1930 were both demolished this summer by their owners, Wayne State University, to make way for a greenspace with a meandering sidewalk. Both buildings were vacant for a few years but showed little signs of decay. No architectural salvage was performed on the Smith, Hinchman, and Grylls designed 51 W Warren. 71 W Warren had its cornerstone and a relief saved.

Um, when you need a massive ten foot ladder to get to the "kid space" in the attic, maybe building it wasn't such a good idea after all.
