Film photograph, 3 exposures, 2004. I made the mask by molding aluminum foil to my face and then attaching strips of gauze to the front. That was then shot suspended from behind to hide the support. The spinal bones, which were found in the same area as the stone foundation, were shot second laid out on the floor indoors. Finally, when shooting the stone foundation, I blew smoke toward the top center of the frame to capture a little extra light in the direction which the face appears to be looking. In hindsight, I think I was subconsciously inspired by Chris Cunningham's stunning and innovative work in the video for Portishead's "Only You." (taken with a Nikon FM2)

This painting illustrates Sir Walter Scott's poem "Helvellyn," about a faithful dog that guarded her master's body after he had fallen while mountain climbing. Though the body went undiscovered for three months, the dog stayed to ward off the ravens and foxes that might have scavenged the remains.
