Action shot sport photography in St-Charles-Boroméee this summer. Portrait of a man digging the Beach Volleyball and getting his hand under the ball to save it just in time. Summer tournaments are almost over as autumn indoor season is about to start soon.
Taken with Canon EOS 7D and EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Pei-yun 佩筠 worked with me on a client shoot for an athletic apparel company. She was not just a model in a jock's getup, but a former collegiate champion swimmer with eight gold medals to her name. She was a joy to work with, and selecting the best images is difficult because she did so well.
Strobist:
Strip light behind subject, camera right; small gridded beauty dish, camera left well above, triggered with Pixel King.

This is Indiana Pacers rookie Magnum Rolle. The background was shot two years earlier and processed with Photomatix and the subject was shot in studio using beauty dish overhead with gridded softboxes for rim lighting.

Cover photo shoot for Xavier Nation magazine. 2 Westcott FJ400, 1 with grid spot/barn doors to backlight from mid court. 1 main with large EZYBOX, bare with grid camera right. 10 Nikon flashes (2 SB800, 2 SB900, 4 SB910, 2 SB700) set to su mode. 1 shot was all we needed. And all I got where the flashes mostly fired. The only photoshop done was reducing visibility on the light stands and darkening the floor a bit. We had a few SD8 & 9 battery packs as well.
Shooting with the 85 and being left-eyed I couldn’t really see him coming. Had to guess. Ears help. Listen for the quiet as he takes to the air.
Due to covid there was just one other person on set. Glenn & I set up all the lights then he left to go shoot something else.
Thanks to the 2 friends that lent their flashes to this shoot.

Wei is a dedicated athlete with a fantastic sense of balance and perspective. She has won her age group in international triathlons, and qualified for age group world championships, but she doesn't fit into the compulsive "tri geek" mold, choosing instead to just enjoy the superb fitness she's worked so hard to achieve. Her trademark is pink... on everything, including cycling and running shoes, sunglasses, bar tape on her bike, and her wrist band here.
This is from a recent client shoot. But since the client will not end up using a faceless image it's free to share.

** of actually like 80 but yeah. Something a little different.

It's probably no secret I've struggled finding my place after sports. This is what makes my heart full and where I always felt I was meant to be. If anything defines myself, it's this. I try not to post ultra personal things anymore but i can't express how nice and empowering it is to find new and old things to make your heart feel a new kinda happy again.
I lost my sense of self for a long time and sitting in front of a computer 24/7 at college trying to be something I just wasn't good at and ended up resenting, and suppressed the things I loved most for no good reason. I've known what I enjoy my entire life so I don't know why it was so hard for my conflicted adult self to realize/take pride in them when I've always had the confidence in things I loved.
I was super inspired by gritty old Nike ads I dreamt of being in myself and said screw it and went out one foggy early morning and simply did one of the things I love most in front of a camera. I love editorial images so much dangit. Lately I'm just really happy with regaining my sense of self. Not trying too hard to be something I'm not, but existing genuinely as the same old 10 year old obsessed with getting muddy, playing soccer, Spyro the Dragon, fast cars and how they work, action movies, and colorful, impactful images. And my dog. Obviously. 🐺

No matter how many things I try out, I've realized I've always been a performer at heart and I've always been confident in my body and the strong, speedy things it can do.
I was sometimes shyer growing up which is probably why performing and expressing with my body on a stage or on a field was something I always felt comfortable doing. I always wanted to be the one on the field or the stage, not the one reporting about the ones on them. And it's so interesting to see how the first things I was passionate about evolve into others as I get older through this "journey" (I literally hate that phrase but it's midnight and I'm not clever rn) to finding a new dream and purpose. I want to be good at what I love and I want to inspire others by putting in the hard work, physically and mentally, and to embrace toughness and elegance in what you do or who you are simultaneously.
First I was a dancer. I loved tap and jazz so, so much and you'll still find me jittery and mildly tap dancing through the house sometimes. always moving. At the same time and what eventually won over, I was a soccer player. That's all I knew for well over ten years. So much passion and dedication and I'ms scared I'll never have that drive for something again. All the while developing an admiration for aesthetically pleasing bold impactful editorial imagery.
My whole life I knew I've always been an athlete, I've always been an artist and I will continue to be an adventurer, always putting in 110% for anything I enjoy. Cause that's the point of this whole life thing, right?

I usually use my own models but this time around I dove into a stock photo site and uncovered this image. I thought it fit in well with what I wanted to accomplish.

you should. I'm telling you, it doesn't work. It's just not humanly possible to bend like that. Yet she does it. Wanna see more?
