The Acropolis of Athens
The Acropolis of Athens, (high city, the “Sacred Rock”) is the most famous acropolis in the world. The word acropolis is formed from Greek, 'akros' or 'akron' meaning edge, extremity and 'polis' meaning city. Acropolis literally means city on the edge. For the purposes of defence, early settlers chose elvated ground, frequently a hill with precipitous sides.
