This group of about 100 kuaka was roosting among tidal grasses and a flat area semi-flooded by the shallow remnants of the tide.
The birds were associating with other waders including a lone whimbrel, a small group of lesser knots, pied stilt, black stilt and both variable and South Island oystercatcher; banded dotterel and spur-winged plover. The lone whimbrel is notable (where it appears in these photos) by its markedly down-curved bill. The knots also have similar colouring to the godwits but are less than half the size.
Family: Scolopacidae
New Zealand’s most common migrant wader. The Bar-tailed Godwit is a large wader which breeds on Arctic in Eurasia and Alaska. The eastern race (baueri) then migrates to Australasia, especially New Zealand estuaries, sandy beaches and shores of coastal lakes. It makes the longest known non-stop flight of any bird and also the longest journey without pausing to feed by any animal, 11,680 kilometres (7,258 mi) along a route from Alaska to New Zealand. A relatively short-legged species of godwit. The bill-to-tail length is 37–41 cm, with a wingspan of 70–80 cm. Males average smaller than females but with much overlap; males weigh 190–400 g, while females weigh 260–630 g; there is also some regional variation in size. The adult has blue-grey legs and a very long dark bill with a slight upward curve and pink at the tip. The neck, breast and belly are unbroken brick red in breeding plumage, off white in winter. The back is mottled grey. It forages by probing in mudflats or marshes. It may find insects by sight in short vegetation. It eats mainly insects and crustaceans, but also parts of aquatic plants.
It was shown in 2007 to undertake the longest non-stop flight of any bird. Birds in New Zealand were tagged and tracked by satellite to the Yellow Sea in China. According to Dr. Clive Minton (Australasian Wader Studies Group) "The distance between these two locations is 9,575 kilometres (5,950 mi), but the actual track flown by the bird was 11,026 kilometres (6,851 mi). This was the longest known non-stop flight of any bird. The flight took approximately nine days. At least three other Bar-tailed Godwits also appear to have reached the Yellow Sea after non-stop flights from New Zealand." One specific female of the flock, nicknamed "E7", flew onward from China to Alaska and stayed there for the breeding season. Then on 29 August 2007 she departed on a non-stop flight from the Avinof Peninsula in western Alaska to the Piako River near Thames New Zealand, setting a new known flight record of 11,680 kilometres (7,258 mi).
An important bird to Maori culturally and, prior to European settlement, as a food source. The Koaka’s seasonal comings and goings feature strongly in Maori mythology and lore.

About 100 years ago, some attenders at the Quaker adult schools used to apply for associate membership using this form. There were a number of reasons for this not the least being the perception that to be a Friend, one needed to be rich and the working-class attenders at the adult schools were certainly not that.

NRCS Associate Chief Louis Aspey visited Oregon in June 2023 to meet with NRCS' National Water and Climate Center (NWCC) and NRCS Portland Data Collection Office (DCO) staff, both part of the Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting (SSWSF) Program. Cara McCarthy (NWCC Water and Climate Services Team Lead), Melissa Webb (NWCC Water and Climate Monitoring Team Lead), Sean Fleming (Portland DCO Supervisory Hydrologist) and Matt Warbritton (Portland DCO Hydrologist) visited the Mt. Hood Test Site SNOTEL (snow telemetry) site with Associate Chief Aspey to highlight the work of the SSWSF Program and its extensive mountain hydroclimatic monitoring network with more than 900 SNOTEL sites in the western U.S.
The NWCC is located in Portland along with the Portland Data Collection Office, which is part of NRCS Oregon. The NWCC and 12 western states including Alaska, administer the SSWSF program. The NWCC is primarily responsible for producing water supply forecasts and other hydroclimatic products, while state snow survey programs disseminate those products and data, in addition to maintaining the monitoring network. The Portland DCO’s operational area covers Oregon, Washington, and a part of northern CA, overseeing 156 SNOTEL sites and nearly 150 other monitoring stations. Standard SNOTEL sites have a snow pillow to measure snow water content, temperature sensor, precipitation gage, snow depth sensor, and a shelter to house equipment. Some sites have additional sensors for soil moisture, net radiation, wind, and relative humidity. Data from these sites are used in a variety of ways apart from water supply forecasts including for climate research, flood management, wildfire research and risk assessments, hydroelectric operations, ecological management, and more.
