Belltower is part of Church of San Pietro.

Saint Francis was baptised in 1182 and Saint Clare in 1193 in the font made from an ancient granite column. It is girdled by an iron grating. The terracotta tabernacle from 1882 honored the 700th anniversary of Saint Francis's birth.

The bottom part of the nave walls is decorated with the famous fresco cycle designed by Giotto, who supervised its completion by other hands. The cycle contains scenes from the life of St. Francis,

The Basilica of St. Francis in Umbria, the green heart of Italy! I had to find just the right angle to get the Tau in. Too bad some of the bushes were missing on the keraia (horizontal bar at the top). Still one of my favorite photos from my trip!

Papal altar is a single block of stone from 1230. It is in front of the Last Judgment by Cesare Sermei di Orvieto (1609-68). The lunette depict the Triumph of St Francis and three allegories of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity (c.1330).

Scenes of the Apocalypse by Cimabue are below the stained glass window.

Rocca Maggiore has fortified the hights in the background for 800+ years. Begun in 1260, the basilica is dedicated to and contains the remains of St Clare, a follower of St Francis and founder of the Order of the Order of Poor Ladies
