The purpose in this assignment was product photography. When my fiancee bought this can there was no doubt whether I'd use it in this task or not; the name is so hilarious. I used our aquarium's lamp to lighten this one in my marvelous studio setup on kitchen's table.

The Calvert Photography Club photo assignment for 03/16/2019 was "Light". We could only submit two pictures for judging. These were my attempts from which two were submitted. The subject matter consisted of a strong LED light array source, a very small glass cube(frosted on two faces), a plastic diffraction grating sheet, sometimes a plastic fresnel lens sheet, and on the bottom a sheet of very white high gloss ink jet printing paper.

Assignment 3

I will begin with an idea that Susan Sontag touched on in her essay In Plato’s Cave, which is that images change our emotions. These words took me far away, to the Middle East, which is currently living through some of its worst days in terms of massacres and violence. In the last two days, the attacks on Lebanon have been more intense than any in recent years.

I am used to sending messages to people I know there, or to their relatives: “How are you? Are you safe after what happened to your village or the nearby village?” This same sentence, or something similar, repeats every time. But this time, I paused before sending a message of reassurance. Has this message become just a routine that I send whenever I see something in the news? What is the value of such a message when the person reading it is living under rubble and bombardment, unable to sleep because of the sound of planes and missiles?

Have we become used to these images and news as long as we are not the ones living there? Why do some emotions fade over time, even though the disasters may be greater now? What are these constant news reports doing to us?

I remember in the first nights of the attacks on Gaza, seeing videos of fathers carrying their dead children—innocent, with no way to bring them back to life. Those images were heartbreaking. I spent hours unable to desire anything or feel anything, with those scenes repeating in my mind again and again. But why don’t they come back now? Have we become used to them, or have our hearts changed?
