Spotted in the hibiscus.
"...Zelus longipes has a diabolically clever strategy for catching its prey. Hiding in foliage with its forelegs outstretched, it awaits the approach of an unsuspecting victim. The front legs of this assassin bug are coated with sticky goo (a technical term) perfect for snaring a victim. Once captured, the prey is impaled with a hungry beak that injects proteolytic enzymes, which predigest the contents of the victim. Once that is accomplished, the liquefied contents of the prey are sucked into the digestive tract of the assassin bug with the aid of a tiny muscular pump in the assassin bug’s head."

Another cool bug that I photographed on my last visit to the Circle B Bar Reserve, a Milkweed Assassin.

Anyone here familiar with the Assassin's Creed game saga? My sister loves it!
Here she cosplayed Hunter as an Assassin by making him some hidden blades and an Assassin belt :-)

This dude was ready to jump on me, very scary. (See best in Large)
The wheel bug, Arilus cristatus (Linnaeus), is a moderately common, widely distributed, beneficial assassin bug that preys on pest insects. However, its bite can be more severe than a bee sting, and both nymphs and adults should be avoided or handled with caution. The wheel bug adult usually measures from 1 to 1.25 inches long. This assassin bug is a dark, robust creature with long legs and antennae, a stout beak, large eyes on a slim head, and a prominent thoracic, semicircular crest that resembles a cogwheel or chicken's comb. This is the only insect species in the United States with such a crest.

I enjoy finding these guys in the garden - great macro subjects -
And, in the garden, "...The beneficial qualities of assassin bugs far outweigh their negative potential, and learning to get along with these indispensable predators is in our own best interest." (aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/galveston/beneficials/benefic...)
Assassin in the blackberries !
Taken back at the beginning of September this year 2017.
I believe this to be a marsh damsel bug rather than a common damsel bug - Nabis rugosa but I'm not 100% sure I have to admit.
A tiny little predator of around 7.5mm - 9mm in length and I only noticed it out of the corner of my eye as it roamed over a blackberry and showed up lighter against the dark of the berry while I was focusing on a hoverfly nearby.
It is apparently non specific in its choice of prey.
The image will enlarge a little.

Milkweed assassins (Zelus longipes) are medium sized, distinctively red/orange and black assassin bugs with long legs. They are often found out on plants where they wait to capture prey with their sticky forelegs.
,
Although blurry, it is holding its prey which is a love bug.

Spined Assassin Bug ~ (Sinea diadema)
The Spined Assassin Bug is well named. An ambush predator that waits for its victim in a section of foliage. I was lucky to catch this guy poking his head out.
Thankd for visiting!

These skillful and efficient aerial hunters, also known as robber flies, are a favourite to find and watch.
Medium to large in size, they are active predators of flying insects and will also take web weaving spiders as a meal. Their mouth parts consist of a triangular proboscis which is inserted into prey and dissolved body juices are then sucked up.
Genus Cerdistus, 3cm length.
