At first, we tried to make do with what we had, but I couldn't get past the sad sight of all the stumps all around our campsite. There were at least fifty in the tall grass within a few paces of our tent. Just a couple of years ago, this had been dense forest.
There are five drive-in campgrounds at Rocky Mountain National Park, and some are limping through with a few surviving trees. We saw Timberline on the park's west side decimated on our last visit. We didn't see Moraine Park this time, but it's close enough to Glacier Basin for me to suspect it's dead or dying. Aspenglen looks okay from a distance, though the dead trees loom on the mountain above. The only one left in reasonably good shape is the little campground at Longs Peak, which the park keeps talking about eliminating for parking.
