This marble sculpture was first presented in 1848 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts among the works produced by the residents and received high praise from the jury of the Académie de France in Rome. It subsequently triumphed at the 1849 Salon, receiving a first-class medal and a medal of honour.
The critics were unanimous, as Théophile Gautier later recalls: “With his Penelope Asleep, Mr Cavelier has established himself as one of the greatest modern sculptors.

We are here ... and I am on walkabout happily snapping the very non-Canadian streets, people and scenes of Portugal. In my mind (and literally) Keefer Lake is asleep in the snow and cold for the time being.

Sun Bears have very short, smooth fur that varies from black to grey. They get the name ‘Sun Bear’ from the yellow rising-sun-shaped patch on their chest. Sun Bears have very long, curved claws which are helpful in tree climbing and extracting food from logs.
In the wild: Very little is actually known about Sun Bears in the wild because they are difficult to track and observe. They are mostly nocturnal and spend the day sleeping and sunbathing in trees. Unlike other bears, Sun Bears do not hibernate. This is because food is available all year round.
Threats: Habitat destruction and poaching are major threats to the Sun Bear. Bear paw soup is a delicacy in some Asian cultures. Restaurants keep the bears in small cages in cruel conditions and their paws are cut off to make the soup.
At least the Niederdorf looked like being asleep. Other parts of the city were already a bit busy, either people going to work (eg. hospitals) or coming home from the party with a burger or beer in the hand.

Since childhood, I have referred to flowers which have closed up for the night, as being "asleep", so I thought it might be a good subject for this challenge. Some research on the internet reveals that they aren't really sleeping ... but in a way, they are resting in that they are conserving energy for daytime activities such as reproduction.
Plants that tuck themselves in for bedtime exhibit a natural behaviour known as nyctinasty. Scientists know the mechanism behind the phenomenon: In cool air and darkness, the bottom-most petals of certain flowers grow at a faster rate than the uppermost petals, forcing the flowers shut. But scientists are not quite sure why some plants, particularly flowers, evolved this way. There are several theories, though.
Charles Darwin believed that plants close up at night to reduce their risk of freezing. Another theory suggests that nyctinastic plants are conserving energy — and perhaps their odour — for the daytime when pollinating insects are most active.
Some scientists believe that this behaviour prevents pollen from becoming wet and heavy with dew. Insects can more easily transfer dry pollen, improving a nyctinastic plant's likelihood of successful reproduction.

I shot these chimps at the zoo on a very hot day when the sun was pretty much directly overhead. The resulting photo, as you can see just below, was terribly overexposed. Several layers of "multiply" later plus the pebble photo blended in for texture plus some painting to disguise the all-too-white rock and this is the result. I thought about getting rid of the blues that intensified during the multiply process, but then I decided I liked them!
One of my favourite memories of Daisy. She loved to sleep on my lap. But quite often I would realise she was watching me to see if I’d noticed she was awake. This is just one of those moments - meant to be a photo of her sleeping, but she was watching instead.

Asleep of hands...
She lay peacefully content in the comfort of home with the moon and stars glisten and sparkle through her window echoing silk reflections on her curtains in their delicate materials her light enveloping the nights shadows as she slowly drifts to sleep in her visionary dreams where numbers of hands ethereal glowing began to float, echo and recede in sweet harmony above her as if watching over her and slowly floating to her window on the night of silvery moon where light transcends through out time and space to leave feelings of peace and serenity in her visionary dreams where freedom resides.....
I am thinking about the very brave, courageous Israeli people right now and all of the innocent people there who are suffering, l pray for peace to the Israeli people to the world soon.
A message to all women in the world... Freedom resides deep within You!! You are precious, unique individuals !! Freedom of choice and expression is your human right. Sending love and light!!
I am thinking about humanity in art and the struggles many artists woman face in their art/ life. That ,pain we feel suffering real things that empower art the energy that moves resides deep within you that ignites it, We mustn't lose our essence, listen to your inner voice that helps you stay true and be free to express yourself as an artist creator an individual. This is precious!! It is important we stay true....
My heart goes out to the very brave, courageous Ukrainian people and all innocent people who are suffering through this war. l pray for peace and harmony soon to the Ukrainian people to the world. Stay strong !
